Don’t come here. Salmon was sold to me as the best item on the menu, and it tasted like hospital food. They didn’t get me sick, but I paid a fortune to watch my family eat well while I got a tasteless meal. The manager slightly scolded me saying it was how they handle allergies. 🤷🏻♀
We had dinner last night 01/15. No GF menu but the staff was good at letting us know what was GF. One appetizer and 3 entrees. We ordered the poke served GF and it was very good and substantial as it was served with a generous portion of rice. We both had the butterfish with white rice as the black rice normally served is not GF. The other fish choice was Atlantic salmon. Butterfish was too sweet for us. One of the fish choices that sounded appealing was served with chimichurri sauce and we were told that it is not GF. That was a head scratcher as we enjoy chimichurri sauce often.
The restaurant was super loud as we were seated by three large parties. Everyone with a corporate business card was there. We could barely hear each other across the table.
The service was however very good! Lack of GF choices …not their fault.
Roy’s is a popular and busy Waikiki place.
We won’t be going back. It’s not a place for us.
Roys was excellent. I came with a group and the servers and chefs were more than willing and extremely helpful to accommodate for my gluten sensitivity. Anything on the menu was able to be modified to be gluten free. The servers were very knowledgeable and polite and the chocolate cake was amazing. Make sure if you have time to stop here for a great meal!
Best place I’ve ever been to! Not only are they very careful and accommodating for GF, they have alternatives that are delicious. Lots of times when I go out GF, the food is very bland and tasteless because they just take spices out. Here they have alternative dishes and spices that they make special that are absolutely delicious. They are always extremely careful and go out of their way to say that the food is gluten-free that they’re bringing and that they prepared it for you so you don’t have to worry at all.
Waiter was super knowledgeable about what was in the food and each time they brought out a dish, the delivery person stated it was checked by the chef for no gluten. I also have dairy allergy and they were mindful of it too. They even have a GF molten cake that was so delicious.
Excellent food! The waitress was very knowledgeable about what could be made gluten free. They even offered a chocolate soufflé for dessert! I had their chili edamame, butterfish with two excellent sauces, the California roll sushi (real crab meat vs the fake crab meat, so it’s gluten free), and the cho plate soufflé. I highly recommend! Their Roy’s red wine was not super good, though. Very sweet.
We spent 9 days in Honolulu, and this was our favorite dinner. The gf-df butterfish was delicious, and we also had seared ahi w gf tamari. Delicious! Our server was very helpful and seemed experienced with gluten free requests. There’s ample outdoor seating, but you probably need to make reservations well in advance to sit outside.
They had a separate gluten free menu on their website but told us they did not have one when we got to the restaurant. Not very knowledgeable about gluten free items on their menu and it seemed difficult for them to modify items for us. That said, the food we got was good. Side note the restaurant is very loud and service was very slow.
Expensive-overpriced. There were a couple of GF items on the menu and the staff helped me sort through which ones. The sushi vinegar they use is GF, which is rare. They gave me tamari. If you are looking for a couple of safe items in a very upscale dining environment, this may suit your needs.
Went to Roy’s for sushi after reading a couple of reviews here - their menu doesn’t have much to offer that isn’t prepared with regular soy sauce. I almost left because I was disappointed but the wait staff went out of their way to make me sushi without any sauces incorporated. They also cleaned their work stations before preparing my food and it ended up being one of the best meals I had in Hawaii.
As a gluten free person I’m used to (and expect to) be treated as an annoyance at most restaurants, but this was *not* the case here. When asking if they’d be able to accommodate, the hostess ensured me the chefs would see it as a fun challenge and not a burden. Every staff member was informed of my allergy and was very aware of it, but also very into the idea of finding me modifications or ways of getting me a great meal.
It wasn’t a cheap restaurant, but was delicious and definitely worth it. Will definitely go again if I’m ever back in Waikiki.
great waiter who went out of his way to try to help us be gluten free safely. just wish the menu had more gluten-free options that didn't end up having to be stripped down to be gluten safe. we've been spoiled living in Boulder where most restaurants have several great Gourmet options already gluten free.
Went here for my birthday dinner. We were impressed from start to finish. The staff was outstanding and very knowledgeable about their gluten free options. I had the butter fish and the sweet potato soup. Both were delicious. They brought me ice cream and a fabulous flourless chocolate cake which my kids pre ordered to surprise me. I can't wait to come here again.
Huge disappointment. 1st time I ate at Roys in Kauai it was amazing. The meal was a showpiece. Service was off the charts. We have eaten in CA many times. Dining in Waikiki was like I was in another place. Service was shaky at best. We had our reservations since the night before or I would have walked out. I told the server I was gluten free highly allergic to gluten. Her attitude was almost then why are you eating here? My family was looking forward to eating there otherwise I would have closed my menu and left. It wasn't until I pushed to see what the chef could do that she started helping. They did serve me a GF meal, I hope. The meal was ok. My family said the same about there's. I don't live here so they won't go under I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. If I was running this site I pull them off.
Although a nice restaurant with friendly staff I received different info from every person about what I could get gluten free. This location doesn't have a GF menu and when I asked the waitress what I could have without having to modifying it she directed me to the short ribs as the only ok option as is. Later the mgr came over and assured me they could do something I would like that would be perfectly safe and needless to say I was ill within a hour of my meal. When I called just to let them know about the Issue I had they tried to tell me how careful they were and they did not get gluten in my food. I told them I only get that ill from gluten they still continued on about how they know about cross contamination etc etc what do u want from me, and I said I only wanted to let you know so you would be more careful for someone else. I got off the unhappy feeling like they didn't feel like they did anything wrong, they never even said they were sorry.
