If you inform of allergy they take each item from the fridge instead of salad bar
While the concept of this place is cool and the salad was delicious, I got horribly glutened here. It’s sad as they could so easily avoid cross contamination if they had separate spoons/tongs for every ingredient instead of using their hands with the same gloves that touch croutons at the end of the line and go back to the beginning and contaminate everything. While they did change their gloves for me, it made no difference as like I mentioned before, things were cross contaminated. If you don’t have celiac, or a severe gluten sensitivity I think you may be ok, but if you’re celiac or have a severe intolerance stay FAR away from here.
The staff was awesome about my allergies (gluten and dairy)! They changed their gloves and got fresh ingredients so no cross contamination! Dressings are labeled so you know what’s safe.
Go here to eat safely if you are Celiac! Super salads in regular or large size bowl, delicious salad dressings, choice of 3 tasty soups (broccoli cheese is my fav!), meat, shrimp or salmon choices, you will be full when you leave! Just DO NOT eat the croutons or any of the bread of course. Eat in or out (but it is way too hot in Houston summers during the day!). I have NEVER been glutened here.
The staff was wonderful, very accommodating and needed no explanation other than, I have a gluten allergy. The food was delicious, I had a small salad which was plenty. There were lots of veggie options, toppings and dressings, all GF. The chicken and salmon were GF. Great place.
soups are also gf! they make your salad. everything is clearly marked.
I arrived here to meet a friend for lunch right after the doctors appointment where she said I probably have celiac (not even knowing what it meant to eat out)...wow I picked the right place! Made me feel welcomed, put new gloves on and got toppings out of separate containers under the counter. Everything I wanted was available. Even the cashier was reminded to not touch my tray.
My wife was diagnosed with Celiac disease years ago and has multiple food allergies. We went to Salata for the first time, and as I was paying for the food, I saw tears welling up in her eyes. She said she couldn't remember the last time she'd been treated so kindly at a restaurant. Fresh gloves, separate containers for ingredients, and a knowledgeable server made her feel safe, but it was the feeling of being welcome that made her day. Her server, Dina, and the manager, Olga, were amazing, and as we left they said, "Next time you come back, just let us know, and we'll take good care of you." They should add compassion as a menu item, because it was there in abundance.
Staff does not always change gloves after handling the bread and crouton items. I said something and the server offered to change gloves, but I declined to let my son eat there because I had concerns over how many other times gloves contaminated with gluten had been used previously in all of the salad items.
I have to uodate my review. Place used to be safe, but now there are so many people eating there, and so many bread crumbs where they toss the salads. My poor daughter was glutened a few months ago. Too afraid to go back. Shame. I wouldn't trust the soup. It's right next to the bread, and there are crumbs everywhere.
No problem at all with doing gluten free. The broccoli soup is really good! As far as the salad, I felt like they were super skimpy on toppings. I kept having to tell them more, more, more. . . and in the end my salad was still mostly lettuce! I guess I like going to Jason's Deli better where I can get twice as much for my money.
Extremely sensitive to gluten. I have ate there for almost about a month. I didn't have any reactions till one day it got me. I was sick for about a week. There is so much cross contamination if you really pay attention as how food is prepared. Will not be going there ever again.
Great concept but poorly executed. The staff was very accommodating to change their gloves as the bowl got passed through the line. However, part way through the meal I look over and the workers who were at the beginning of the line (the lettuce) had made their way down to the end of the line (the bread) and went directly back to dishing out the lettuce. All well and good, except that there was no change of gloves. This could easily be fixed by getting scoops for ingredients, changing gloves, or just having each employee stay at one section of the line. Beyond that food was good and decent portions but too much so on the cross contamination!!!
Negative 2 stars is more accurate. This place advertises assistance with selecting a gluten free meal and 2 employees had no idea what I was even saying when I stated the phrase "gluten-free". Thankfully, there were labels on the counter to assist me better than the employees. The salad is good and so far, there hasn't been a reaction to their GF/vegan tomato basil soup. The employees need better training for those with diet preferences. Needless to say, I will not be returning.
I love this place! I have celiac disease, a sunflower allergy and am a vegetarian. Even in Southern California this can make it challenging to eat out as I am very, very sensitive to gluten cross contamination. There is a sign on the wall that says to let them know if you have a gluten allergy and they will take precautions. So I did. I can not speak highly enough of the service at the City National location. Not only did the server change her gloves with a smile, when I explained that I have a severe allergy, she took all of my food items from the covered containers underneath the counter without rolling her eyes, or saying, or being some other way that made me feel like my allergies were a burden to her. I have been eating there once or twice a week for the past few months and have never, ever gotten sick from cross contamination. The staff there is just wonderful. I can't speak highly enough about the service I've received there. They always take the allergy precautions with a smile and have never once served me contaminated food. They are so consistently wonderful I can even place an order online and trust that not only will my order be correct (it always is) but that the staff will have taken the allergy precautions. This place is a life saver!
If I could give this a negative star I would. I brought in a friend who had never been there before because I'd found this place clise to work that seemed super awesome AND they were so great about gluten issues. Sadly, the staff really weren't that well versed and I had to keep saying gluten allergy. Then towards the end when I was paying one of the guys came along and plunked a big slice of bread on my bowl!!! So the manager did my bowl himself, not very well, but that was fine. THEN he didn't believe me when I said there was avacado in the glutened bowl and actually DUG through it to check. He absolutely made me feel like a thief. The worst part? I had to tell his people in line not to put new veggies on top of old veggies in the bin. That they needed to rotate it. Yeah. They didn't understand that very well either. Needless to say .. food poisoning later and I will not be back. Food allergies? Sensitive to contamination? Yeah. I wouldn't risk it.
Contamination is a serious risk here. I love this place, but I wouldn't take my celiac family here during lunch. The first part of the line is gloriously GF. Then they run everything under a toaster with crumbs flying. Everyone behind the counter handles bread. Just not set up for celiac.
Well, there is gluten free food here, but you don't have a lot of options and a lot of the workers don't know what they are doing. No gluten free soups, just salad, which you can find anywhere and you just have to hope someone is on duty who knows what they are doing. Not all that impressed.
This salad shop offers all of their salad dressings, fixings and soups gluten free. Their web site has a breakdown of allergens, in case you are worried about soy or dairy. I order from them frequently throughout the week, and I have never had symptoms after. The staff is very friendly, and if you are clear that you have an allergy, they are very careful.
FOR CELIACS I had hoped to eat here without getting sick. I've tried it on a few occaisions and I get sick. It's either got to be the salad dressing, which they claim is gluten-free, the chicken, which they claim is gluten free, or the cross contamination at the end of the line - which is the bread station. I can't communicate effectively with the staff using English, so I've been unable to ask for any special care or to drill-down a little on how truly gluten-free their ingredients are. Sadly, this place will have to go off my list. Apart from getting sick. You know, the salads are decent, the dressings are tasty and the staff is a bit unfriendly. Pretty much what the other reviews say.
This is an excellent soup and salad restaurant. They make the salad for you and selection of greens, veggies, fruit and meat is wonderful. They carry three different soups, all of which are gluten free. The only thing that isn't gluten free is their optional bread and the seafood items for the salad. I am a huge fan of this place.
