The icecream was phenomenal and the staff was even better. They asked us when we came IN if any of us had dietary needs. There was a menu with all of the flavors and next to it it had the allergy list. They were so understanding and got the icecream and sample icecream from the back. As a person with celiac, I felt very comfortable being there.

An ice cream shop for all! Being both vegan & gluten free, I was so happy to enjoy The Cloudforest Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream. Please open shops in NY.

Most delicious ice cream I have had in a really long time. I had the salted caramel ribbon and my husband had the coffee and chocolate flavour. They offered to give me samples from containers in the back fridge but I already had my heart set on a flavour! They pulled out a new scoop and opened a new container for me, which was amazing. The scoops were in a drawer right below the waffle cone makers so that made me a little nervous. I would definitely agree with the comment below and buy a tub from the freezer if you want to be 100% safe.

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. They had many great flavors of ice cream that were gluten free as well as vegan.

When we first went to the counter they asked if we had any allergies. We told them we have one with Celiac. She told us what flavors were safe and then asked if we wanted her to scoop from an unopened carton in the back. Wow, impressive!

Staff asked first thing about allergies. We said our daughter has celiac, so they got a new spoon and got her ice cream from a brand new pint of ice cream in the freezer to be sure it was not cross contaminated. Their menu clearly details contents, so you know which to avoid. The ice cream was A M A Z I N G!! If your in the area, don’t pass up a stop here for ice cream.

When informed that my child had celiac disease they got a new scoop and a new pint of ice cream to serve hers up from. They have many options for gluten free. Their flavors are sometimes quirky and odd but some of them are more normal and all that I have tried are rich and delicious. We have been several times with our child with celiac disease that is very sensitive to cross contamination and she has never felt ill after eating here.

Excellent ice cream and helpful staff. Very conscious of cross contamination. A few good dairy free options as well.

Staff is knowledgeable what is GF and what is not. Not a dedicated GF facility.

Very accommodating. I was able to tell the servers I had celiac disease and they went to the back to new ice cream containers for samples and serving. There are also very good vegan options as well!

The long line moved quickly and we were easily accommodated. I told the server we were celiac and it was no problem for her to scoop ours from the back in a fresh container. I only had a bite but the salted caramel was amazing!

Ask the staff about which flavors are gluten free, they are knowledgeable and really nice! They will go in the back and scoop you ice cream from a new bin, so there's no cross contamination. Definitely Celiac's friendly! Many of the rotating flavors aren't gluten free, but enough of the core flavors are, so there's enough options.

I stumbled upon this place without any prior research. Their menu marks which ice creams contain wheat. I was pleasantly surprised when staff members were taking requests for samples from guests in line and asked first if you had any allergies. When I said gluten, he then asked if I needed to be careful about cross-contamination. As a Celiac, I do, and he didn’t hesitate. He knew exactly what to do. He grabbed fresh pints out of the to-go freezer and scooped my samples (and my eventual order) from there. I was so impressed! As for the ice cream, when they say salt, they aren’t kidding. I LOVE salted caramel ice cream but this was too salty for me. Instead I got a seasonal offering with lemons and blueberries that turned out to be vegan, but you could have fooled me. So creamy!

They asked every customer whether they have allergies. My friend has nut allergies and I have celiac, so they immediately went to their fridge and opened new pint containers for us to sample so there wouldn’t be any contamination. Both of us were fine after and we really appreciated the extra steps to keep us safe despite the huge line out the door!!Mint chocolate chip (this one is vegan) is my favorite flavor but the matcha raspberry get special mention too. Enjoy your ice cream everyone!!

Salt & Straw has such unique ice cream flavors and most of them are gluten free. The staff can scoop your ice cream from unopened containers in the back to avoid cross contamination. You can get samples from the back as well.

Tell the staff you have celiac - they will tell you what flavors are safe, and they will get your order (as well as your samples) with clean spoons from unopened pints they have in the back. I do this every time, I have celiac and have never had a reaction. Seasonal flavors are awesome :)

The bins at the front counter are not gluten free, but they pulled new pints for me to taste test, and they washed the blender before making my milkshake. very helpful in telling me what was gluten free and not, and very accomadating

Ok, so for both the people complaining about the wait and about cross contaminationanation, skip the line and grab a pint from the freezer. No wait (skip the line!) and they list all allergens and ingredients on each pint. I have celiacs and have been buying pints from them for 6 years or so with no issues.

Great experience- the staff is very knowledgable and they go out of their way to avoid cross contamination, serving from new pints instead of the communal (and cone crust filled) tubs. Most of their flavors were GF

Wonderful flavors and excellent GF service. The server retrieved new pints of the flavors we wanted to taste to ensure no cross contamination.

The staff was well informed and accommodating. I chose my ice cream flavor, they confirmed it was GF, and since I told them I have celiac they opened a new pint and brought out a new scoop to prevent cross contamination. They also informed me that machines are washed between flavors during production.

Worth the wait, time, and money! It's worth trying, excellent find. I didn't have to wait that long in line. Ice cream was out of this world delicious! You will not be disappointed if you try it!! There were several GF options, just couldn't have waffle cone but with ice cream that good you don't need a cone. 5 Stars!!

The people working here are super helpful. They will scoop your ice cream in the back to avoid cross contamination. Even the samples can be scooped in the back. Only downside is the long line.

The ice cream is delicious but cross contamination is a big issue. I finally gave up going here since I end up feeling sick more often than not.

Waffle cone batter. Everywhere. It looked like a cross contamination nightmare so I bailed out of the (forever too long) line. If you're celiac and interested in trying one of their gf flavors I would recommend visiting Petunia's bakery - shorter line and safer! This salt&straw location does tend to be a bit less busy though, so if you're game and want to request clean scoops/fresh tubs this would probably be the best to visit.

Most of the ice cream flavours are gluten free (though be sure to check- chocolate brownie isn't etc.) and they were very helpful/ considerate about my allergy. Very busy, popular place. Interesting unique flavours. They even offered to give me mine from a fresh barrel with a fresh ice cream scoop to avoid cross contamination. I didn't ask for this, but I think that means it would be celiac friendly if you needed it to be. Had it many times and always feel fine after.

Do you want to wait forty-five minutes to an hour or more for an average ice cream shop in Portland? Do you want to stress about if you have enough time to do that where you parked? Do you want the stress of finding a parking space in downtown Portland? Then this is the spot for you! I will say, while we waited, and waited, and waited, those waiting in line with us were very pleasant and nice. The employees were also pleasant and helpful. The ice cream was OK, but a little strongly flavored. I tried almost everything, including the blue cheese one . . . one bite was enough of that. It tasted good, but in a one or two bite way. More than that would be too much as it was too strong. As you are waiting on a public sidewalk, expect smokers around. I say this as I know many who have asthma triggered by it. I will say the ice cream is acceptable, but for all the trouble, it better be orgasmic! I will give them this: they are knowledable about what flavors are g-free. There are far better shops in Portland. You want great ice cream, leave downtown and head for Cloud City.

The servers at salt and straw happily scoop gluten free ice cream out of separately packed pint jars with separate serving utensils than those used in the other ice creams. They were lovely and so was my GF/vegan ice cream (I'm not vegan and it was still great).
