Salads and gluten free bread make sandwich possibilities real!
They no longer have gluten-free bread. :-( So bummed.
I noticed today that schlotzskys has gluten free bread and a list of dressings, and some other stuff that aren't gluten-free
Most, if not all, sandwiches and pizzas will be GF with their GF buns or GF pizza crust. They are also one of the few Schlotzsky's I know of that serve breakfast. They can also use the GF buns for that. I have never observed them preparing the food, or talked to them about what they do, so if that is a concern, you may want to call and check first.
We've eaten here many times. Sometimes you have to double check your order upon receiving it. A couple of times the kitchen staff had to remake our order. But those experiences were clustered together, so I wonder if there was a change in staff. They change their gloves. Haven't had any trouble with the food in the last year.
Schlotzsky's has an abbreviated menu/allergen list in the store, and additional info online. They have Udi's bun and GF pizza crust available. The lady at the counter was unable to indicate if they take additional precautions, but they franchise suggests they do. They do not consider themselves a gluten-free environment and caution cross-contact can happen.
No stars have bun and pizza crust but NO meat for you sandwich.
I had heard that carried Udi's bread here and finally decided to try it. Yes, you risk cross-contamination, but they do flag the kitchen every time you order a gf sandwich (they change gloves, etc.). It was delicious...and sometimes you just want nostalgia in your life ;)
schlotzsky's has worked on getting up to speed on gf items. you can order any sandwich on gf bun- it's tasty, especially if you're having warm sandwich. i get the ultimate grilled cheese or angus beef and cheese. they offer a gf udi's pizza but i haven't tried it. i always remind them i need a glove change but they seem cool about it.
The first time I ate here, I tried to return my sandwich, because I thought they'd given me a regular bun. That's how good the GF sandwiches are. This is a regular stop for me now! I have an allergy to barley, and I've never had a reaction from eating here.
Update 1/17/17. They now have gluten free pizza crusts. I had the same toppings that I know are safe. Delicious and tasty. This is one of the best pizza crusts! They have Udi's buns and are cautious. The food is delicious. I am so excited to get this sandwich back again. before they had the buns I would order the sandwich with extra lettuce in a bowl. The staff are all very helpful.
I was actually prepared not to be impressed and was wondering whether I would get sick. So my wife and I watched the preparer very closely and I was very impressed. He changed his gloves twice during prep and laid extra paper down to avoid cross contamination and the food was heated on paper so it never came in contact with the heating element. I had the bacon, gouda BLT. It was good and I have not had a reaction.
They are able to make anything GF, including breakfast items. They have dedicated GF ingredients and kitchen space. They also use disposable foils for all food prep as to not cross contaminate with other foods in their ovens. They even had GF dipping sauce (soup) for their sandwiches. Great place in the middle of nowhere!
We did not actually eat here, just stopped for coffee, but they are now carrying booties gluten-free buns and pizza crust. The restaurant was not very clean, however, if you are in the middle of nowhere in Texas and need to stop for a bite, this is a decent choice when it's about impossible to find gluten-free food.
This was my first time having to explain Celiac so I was very nervous. I just was diagnosed. The manager was so kind. He even said his sister had Celiac. He personally made my food. He changed his gloves, washed the knives really well, and he used a counter that had not been used. He even laid plastic down on the counter to prepare. I felt so much better.
