This is a dedicated gf restaurant with lots of options. I had the gf de fish and chips with fries. It was delicious!!!!! They have lots of baked goods too. The service was great, felt super comfortable. I enjoyed sitting outside on the tables by the super quiet street. Loved it
We always stop in when we are in the area. Shambala is 100% gluten-free and 100% vegan, so this GF DF gal can have everything.
My favorite thing to eat in is the Gorgeous Green Salad and the pizzas. There are other items, but these are my favorites. They have a robust soda fountain, juice, coffee, and tea selection.
I’ve had many of the different bakery items, including breads, cupcakes, cookies, scones, tea cakes. It’s just a question of your tolerance for sweetness versus savory that helps me make the choice. The breads are fantastic. If you’re in the Mount Vernon store, they can slice the bread. The staff are always good at talking about the pros and cons of different items.
On Sundays they are at the Ballard Farmers’ Market in Seattle. They cannot slice the bread at that market. It’s still some of the best gluten-free / dairy-free bread in western Washington.
Love this place! Their sourdough loaf is the best bread I have found. I am a full time traveler and have kept an eye out around the country for great bread and found it here. The pizza crust is also great. The food is good. Check the specials!
Oh, also my husband ordered a birthday cake for me from shambala and it was yummy!
We got there 10 minutes before closing on a Monday (which is right before their weekend). 8 of the 9 items were very fresh and a spin in the microwave for 30 seconds softened the bagel right up. We ordered 9 things, 2 bagels, three cookies, a pie bar, 2 scones, and one muffin. So a pretty good sampling. Highly recommend.
This place really reminds me of a worn-in, indie coffee shop in my college town. Very nostalgic. My husband I had the egg sandwich and burger. Both were good! The sandwich could’ve used a little salt or some extra flavor — good on the gf scale, but if I got this at a non-gf restaurant, I’d hold it to a higher standard. My husband’s burger was exactly what he was looking for, though. And it can be hard to find Celiac-safe burgers in our neck of the woods! We got a few pastries to go, which were not very tasty. Dry, crumbly, a little flavorless. I’m a big baker, and if I made these at home, I’d be extremely disappointed. My rec is to grab the cafe options and skip the baked goods. Oh, and the service was a little strange. The person at the counter didn’t help us for awhile, even though we were the only people in line; the napkins were in a strange spot, like they were only for staff, but our server didn’t give them to us with our food; etc.
Safe place to eat but I would skip it. $12 loaf of bread is good but pastries are dry and old, ginger ale was flat, and service is terrible. I sent back ginger ale but had already paid so settled on 1/2 cup of water from self filling station. Atmosphere is okay but not relaxing and place was dirty. Would not recommend to anyone.
Just walked out of there.
Really good food. We ordered the Fish and chips and the Ruben. Both delicious items, although I didn’t know that the Ruben was vegan was still delicious.
My girlfriend is celiac and I’m allergic to soy, so for us to find this Mecca in the middle of Mnt Vernon was amazing.
The down fall is that the front of the house workers need a little more training.
They were not able to answer simple questions about the menu and for some reason my Ruben ticket didn’t print and the worker forgot about it.
Besides that a really good place to stop by and get some lunch and coffee or a Ghost fish IPA.
Honestly just had a really disappointing experience. Yes I believe it to be gluten free but the food was simply not good. We got herbed potatoes, bland and burnt. Avocado toast, ordered with no tomato, came with tomato and half bad Avocado. Biscuits and gravy, if you LOVE mushrooms, maybe you'd like this, I do not and I did not. Haven't waited long enough to know if there's any tummy upset but flavor was 2/10
Had a strange, and worrisome experience today. Went and the server quickly asked if we had celiac, when we answered, “yes.” We were told the flour used is contaminated and is not safe for those with celiac. I asked if it was a temporary, accidental contamination, and although the explanation wasn’t super clear, it did not sound like this was a short term or temporary problem.
This is the first we have heard this, but I’d rather concerning for an establishment that is gluten free.
Had a great lunch (patty melt and excellent coleslaw) and took home baked goods too. Nice small restaurant and bakery. My non-celiac spouse said he would not have known the buns were gf unless you told him (big complement!) I have purchased their bread elsewhere, which tempted me to drive a ways to the restaurant. I look forward to cinnamon biscuits tomorrow morning too!
Mixed experiences. I got the burger once and it was great 5/5. Another time I got the biscuits and gravy at a street event, sad to say it was so bad I dumped the $15 plate in the trash after 5 bites. Genuinely inedible, perhaps it was the nature of it being a street event, but I won't risk it again.
Service was so-so both times, I paid for an item I didn't get in a take out order and was blatantly ignored for 5min+ the second time. Service is slow.
From the standpoint that it is a 100% gf facility, ill go back for a burger and pastry, but with measured expectations.
Location is VERY cute and cozy, wonderful atmosphere. Just be wary about speed and confirm to-go orders before leaving
I wish I lived closer. The best salad I ever had came from this restaurant. Last visit we had fish and chips and the fish was so fresh! This is real food, from scratch in a GF environment. We were served outdoors and the waitstaff went above and beyond, checking on us often. I am looking forward to my next visit.
We went here for a special occasion. We were so glad to find a dedicated gluten free place to eat out. We specified a tomato allergy for one person in our party. We waited over an hour and 15 minutes for our food and the restaurant was not busy. We got our order and the dish with the tomato allergy came with diced tomatoes all over it. When brought to their attention we were told they would give us a refund for the dish and that was all. I clarified that she was telling us no replacement dish without tomato’s and that we would only be getting a refund?! She said yes, it would be another 25 mins or more if we wanted the dish made as ordered without tomatoes and that we would not be getting a refund if that was the case. Not sure how you can just refund one person and leave them without food and take no care in replacing it or offering anything else on the menu that would suffice. I also did notice tons of long term dust overhead, in corners, and on the wall art. I wish I could say this was a great experience but it was a big disappointment :(
Unfortunately disappointed with the food. Is all gf and a lot df but not great. The bread looked goo.
All food GF and very good. 3 stars because I didn’t receive 3 items I paid for & when I asked the young girls who were working there they kept assuring me everything was in the bag. When I got back to the hotel, I found I was right, it wasn’t there. I spent $100.00, left a 20% tip (no one served me, I got all to go food) & I tried to tell them twice I didn’t think my food was in there. Paying for food you don’t receive is bad business, asking about your food & being reassured it’s “in one of the bags” when it’s not is worse business. Won’t return.
