Exciting and delicious! Safe and fully gluten free, dairy free and vegan. We got seven plates to share. All were amazingly well crafted with so much flavor and texture you don’t miss the meat. Loved the mushroom tempura, the pumpkin croquettes, the hand roll and the baked California roll. So much attention to detail and great service. We’ll definitely be back!
We started Shojin (DT Los Angeles & Culver City) with the hope of creating a place where people with severe allergies such as Celiac, soy, nut, sesame, onion, garlic, and different food preferences like vegan, vegetarian can enjoy the same dining together.
We offer not only GLUTEN-FREE but also plant-based and allergic-friendly food.
You can easily find what allergens are contained in each item on the menu.
As well as gluten-free and plant-based, another important concept is:
Make you and your body healthy and happy.
So, we never use pre-made foods because most of them contain artificial ingredients, colors, and/or preservatives. Instead, we prepare all our sauces, "tuna", "chicken", "beef" and so on in our kitchen using the highest quality ingredients based on the Macrobiotic philosophy, and organic as much as possible.
Sometimes with vegan restaurants, as a celiac I get nervous about risk of gluten cross contact since some meat alternatives can contain gluten. However, Shojin proved to be an establishment who understands and knows how to confirm their dishes are gluten free. After a friendly greeting by the staff, I was promptly seated and asked them to confirm everything was gluten free, which yes it was. However, I also avoid oats (even if gf certified) because of too many cross contact handling occurrences and because I still react. I was so happy to find out they have a menu (official, typed print out) clearly identifying which items contain and do not contain oats. I felt comfortable ordering, and proceeded with the tasting menu as well as an additional roll order and dessert. One tasting menu item had oats so they modified it or told me when served with my table of other diners to not eat it. I did not get sick! I also felt the taste quality was very good considering gluten free as well as vegan. I would recommend this place.
Shojin is so delightful. Thoughtful flavors and textures make up for lack of meat and gluten, and presentation and staff friendliness and enthusiasm really sell the experience. Everything is gf and other allergens are clearly marked. Rotating specials allow for exiting inclusion. Highly recommend the truffle miso soup and krispy rice.
Absolutely fabulous food, outstanding service and attention to detail, and lovely people. Loved every minute and every bite!
My 17 year old had tempura for the first time! What a treat to be able to have delicious gluten free foods that aren’t offered most places.
From the service, to the decor, to the food, my sister and I had the best time. It’s nice not to worry about cross contamination, but I have other random food intolerances in addition to gluten, which they were able to talk me through the menu and accommodate so kindly. All the food was delicious, the flavor and texture of each bite is done so well, and not having symptoms or being concerned about getting symptoms is just the cherry on top.
I will definitely be back and bring my other friends (I’m the only celiac!) who I know would love this place as well.
This restaurant exceeded my expectations and was one of the best gf experiences I’ve had. I get nervous about eating oats at restaurants, and when I saw it a few times on the menu, I asked them about it. They brought out an oat free menu (everything is already gf). We got the pumpkin croquettes and crispy rice as appetizers. Then we had the oyster mushrooms, eggplant sushi and dynamite roll. The eggplant (I think called the purple roll) was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. We had the matcha truffles and sesame ice cream for dessert. The drinks were great too and even my non gf boyfriend was blown away
Celiac visiting LA and went here for dinner last night. Everything was great and 100% gluten free and vegan. Definitely more on the pricey side but worth it for the quality of food and atmosphere. All the staff was very nice. My family members who I went with are not gluten free or vegan but they still enjoyed it.
