If you have Celiac Disease, do not eat at this restaurant.
I ate at this restaurant back in Sep 2018. The previous owners took great care to ensure cross contact was kept at a minimum and they maintained dedicated fryers for the french fries.
I tried the restaurant again in Sep 2023. The restaurant is under new ownership.
They do not have dedicated fryers.
I had a reaction to a basic breakfast (2 eggs, pancakes and bacon).
The service and food quality were not the same as the Sep 2018 experience.

Called ahead to confirm celiac-friendly. They said they had a totally separate griddle and mixing/ prep area for gluten free to prevent cross-contamination. I got the steak & eggs with gluten free blueberry pancakes and emphasized that it was all gluten free for celiac and needed the special prep. The server was very nice and got everything taken care of. The pancakes were HUGE and the best pancakes I'd ever had. Everything was so delicious, and I did NOT get sick at all after. š

Not very clean, sticky tables and menu's. Gf Pancakes but cross contamination. Get sick. My 90 yr old non celiac mother loves this place. Service is poor.

Love going there, but almost every time I end up having issues afterwards. Cross contamination is difficult to prevent.

Dedicated gluten free grill. Management is very aware of GF and very careful in the kitchen to avoid cross contamination.

The waiter was very knowledgeable. There are 10 Items on the menu that are marked GF. I ordered the GF pancakes with blueberries half stack and they were huge and lots of blueberries. The reason I rated this a 4 is due to the lack of options…otherwise it was a 5

My husband called ahead and they were very thorough with their answers. Gluten free options are small, but I got the pancakes and they were pretty good! I felt totally fine after which is always a win.

Smitty's has a lot of memories from when I was a kid (before Celiac's disease hit me). Today I came back because I heard they had gluten free options. They walked me through their process how they clean the flattop and when the manager heard I was extremely sensitive they actually sent someone across the street to Rush's yo buy a brand new omelette. It was AMAZING and I didn't get sick at all. They are keeping the pan do they can use it for future customers too.

Here for breakfast. They offer GF bread/buns and their own GF pancakes. The pancakes were good and came out flagged as GF. GF salad dressings also listed. Staff was helpful.

I was informed they have gluten free bread and pancakes. I decided to try the French toast with gluten free bread. It was very delicious! My son ordered the fries which are so good! I’ll Be returning to try a burger and fries!

I’ve eaten here several times and I love their pancakes! Please be aware that you need to make sure your server understands if you are celiac and they will take extra precautions. Otherwise they cook the GF food on the same griddle as everything else. I’ve never had a reaction, but I have had to send the pancakes back to be redone when double checking with my server when they were brought to our table. Be extra careful when they are super busy.

Pancakes are the best gf pancakes I've ever had!
Best gf pancakes I’ve ever had!!! They are fully aware of celiac issues and cook everything separate
Yes
GF menu isn’t that big but it’s an alright menu. GF pancakes are popular.
Delicious blueberry pancakes. A few have mentioned getting sick. Do not use the boysenberry, strawberry and apricot syrups on the table. The server told me they are not gluten free. She brought me maple syrup that is gluten free. I did fine.
Yes
I went to this restaurant because the reviews said that it was safe. I told the server I have Celiac and wanted GF pancakes. There must of been something wrong with the pancakes because I ended up vomiting later. The only other things I ate were certified GF so it had to be the pancakes.

Great wait staff! Very friendly and respectful of GF needs. I go here just for gf pancakes! They have both blueberry and chocolate chip. I also love their thick cut bacon. Great comfort food breakfast!
Love all the gluten free options! Gluten free pancakes are so yummy!!
Yes
Awesome!! Huge gluten free pancakes that taste BETTER than 'regular!' Our waitress double checked that they do indeed have a dedicated fryer (and delicious fries). They do share a cooking grill for everything, but clean it thoroughly before cooking for gluten free. My husband had a patty melt, I had ham, we split pancakes and fries, and neither of us got sick!! We're both very sensitive! Excellent food AND service. Thank you Smittys
The owner’s daughter is celiac and ensured that foods and prep areas that are gluten free remain that way. Staff is very careful and knowledgeable. GF pancakes are great! Other GF items are tasty as well and haven’t had a reaction to anything served.

Food was great. Steak cooked perfectly. Gluten free pancakes were delicious. Bacon was yummy.
Service from the kitchen was incredibly slow.
Service from our waitress was awesome.
Their gluten free pancakes are amazing. I eat here every time I'm in Idaho Falls.
GF pancakes are amazing!
I have a wheat allergy so severe that the tiniest crumb throws me into anaphylaxis, so I ask a lot of questions about how the food is prepared. I learned that here the fries have a dedicated fryer and the gluten free bread is toasted in a GF dedicated toaster. The GF pancakes are prepared on the same surface as the regular ones, but they will cook them on a different surface (such as a clean pan) if you request it. The food was okay and the service was fantastic! I would feel comfortable eating here again.

Eaten once and didn't get sick
Very low key, American Diner type restaurant. They have menus for people who want gluten free that highlight which dishes are gluten free, so you can see the whole menu but know which dishes are safe. They offer several breakfast options, sandwiches, burgers, steaks. I ordered an omlette with gluten free pancakes because I heard the pancakes were good. They really were! Our service was slow to start out but it picked up fast and our food arrived very quickly after we ordered.
Large GF menu, knowledgable staff, and really good food.

Food was excellent! Waitress was very attentive... making sure everything was safe. Would highly recommend Smitty's to anyone needing to be gluten free
Yes
Our server was very knowledgable. The GF menu does highlight a few deep fried things, but she let us know there's no dedicated fryer, so we avoided the fries and tots and were fine. Not fast, but we prefer safe, so we entertained ourselves. The ribeye is fantastic. Not much on the kids menu is GF so I got a big rib eye steak and shared it with my youngest. They were knowledgable about cross contamination, the GF toast was tasty.
Yes
Separate gluten free menu. Server asked cook about items for my added dairy allergy. She was very attentive and helpful. Food was truly gluten and dairy free. No cross contamination. I didn't get sick. Very pleasant experience.
Yes
Good GF pancakes. My eggs were cooked perfectly. Our server was helpful & understood cross contamination. The GF menu made it easy to find something safe to eat. Great place to stop on the way to the airport.
Yes
my pancakes were fantastic. they have a separate menu that's marked very clearly and has notes regarding GF items/prep. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the service was a little slow and our server didn't seem to fully grasp my concerns, plus my son's steak was way overdone, but it was a great find and if I'm ever in the area I'd definitely go back.
One of the best parts of visiting the in-laws is having pancakes at Smitty's. They are fantastic! Never been ill (except for the sugar crash from too much syrup, but that's on me). I don't branch out from my pancakes and bacon, so I can't comment on anything beyond those, but they get those two spot on!
I had a gf Reuben and fries....yummy and no issues!
Yes
Last reviewer must have had a bad waitress.... The syrup was gf and they will cook meat (sausage, bacon& ham are gf) on a dedicated grill. Pancakes were awesome!!!
Yes
Smittys offered gf pancakes which were delicious - their own recipe. However the waitress said none of their syrups or their breakfast meats are gf so I ate dry pancakes and eggs. What's the point? Hoping I caught them on a bad day. No gf menu or options was given to me. Otherwise Smitty's is a legendary place to eat in Idaho Falls for the non-gf person.
No
GF Pancakes were the absolute best we EVER had. Just like others we were waiting for the gluten affect because they taste just like regular pancakes...but it didn't happen. If your on a GF diet, but you crave the taste of food you grew up on then this place is worth the trip. We came from California!!
Yes
I had to double check that my pancakes were gluten free. They have their own, from scratch, recipe. Very good. Plus they make all their own syrups.
The kiddo and I needed someplace to have some breakfast while on the road and we decided, on a whim, to stop at Smitty's Pancake and Steakhouse. We figured we could at least get eggs. Let me tell you we were so excited to see that they offered GF pancakes. And we were even more excited (and overly stuffed) when we tasted the pancakes. I was so worried they had gluten in them they were so good! We didn't have any issues after eating there and we ate a LOT!
