We’ve been here multiple times over the years and have always had a good experience. My 13 year old son was just diagnosed with Celiac Disease and we thought we would check out their GF selections. We told the server (who had no customer service skills and was completely inattentive) that he is GF and she totally brushed me off. I asked if the salad dressing was GF and again she blew me off. He ordered a GF pasta that looked delicious and was delicious according to him. After the meal he said he thinks he got some gluten because he felt bad. He’s only been GF for about a week and a half. He can already tell if he’s had gluten. I don’t know if our service just sucked or if the establishment is not good with GF. Hard to tell. All I know is that my son feels bad after eating there.
I was very disappointed in my dining experience here. Was told they had gluten free items on the menu. There were a few. Breakfast might have more options but I was there for dinner. Safety appears to be lacking and protocols non existent. I didn’t get sick but I also didn’t eat much of my meal. Look elsewhere for a better option in this area.
Our family loves this place. We have gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, peanut allergies. We eat here safely and happily!
Got the GF pancakes and a GF brioche bun. The first time the pancakes came out they weren’t cooked all the way through; however the server was very accommodating and took them back to be completed again. The pancakes were ok, not great—but still getting used to GF texture because newly diagnosed with celiacs. Brioche bun was delicious: toasted and added jelly.
Service was amazing and the server was knowledgeable of their GF options and the need to prep in a separate area.
I am hoping to save someone the same misery.
We were here on vacation and decided to eat at the Sunshine Grille. They have quite a few “gluten free” options on the menu. They offer gluten free pancakes, so I asked the server if they could do the bananas foster as gluten free since I read on the app that they can make flavored gluten free pancakes. She said yes, so I proceeded with ordering the gluten free pancakes with bananas foster topping.
A few bites into my pancakes, I look around the table and notice that everyone else’s pancakes look pretty much identical. Since my pancakes were covered in a sweet sauce, I nor anyone else could tell if they were gluten free or not upon tasting them. When the server brought our ticket, I asked her if my pancakes were gluten free because I noticed there was no up charge. She had a horrified look on her face and said “no, I’m sorry I didn’t hear anything about gluten free”. So, I had been given gluten pancakes after asking for gluten free, after specifically inquiring whether or not the bananas foster could be made gluten free.
Her and her manager returned to my table and her manager asked if I had mentioned needing gluten free. I explained that yes, I asked if the bananas foster could be made gluten free, and when the server said yes, I proceeded with ordering them. The server admitted she did hear me ask if they could be made gluten free, and she did say yes, but she didn’t realize I was asking to order them gluten free. I’m really not sure how or why she would think I’d just ask if they could be made that way…. Doesn’t matter at this point. I threw up before leaving the restaurant, now have a headache and feel so nauseous.
They did comp my meal, which I appreciate. But I do not think that I will return. It’s sad because there were good reviews. One of the cooks walked out during our dine in experience, and they were short staffed. I still left a tip, explained what Celiac is and what gluten does to me in hopes they will understand the severity. I got plenty of apologies but unfortunately, that will not stop the damage or symptoms that I am bound to have.
Just be cautious if you eat here. I would triple check if you order pancakes that they ARE gluten free before even touching them.
Well, I don't know how anyone could give this place less than a stellar score because for a small mom and pop kind of café, they are TOTALLY committed to offering an extensive gf menu. We had an awesome waitress who showed us the binder they have in the kitchen listing gf foods and gf adjustments for other items. We had gf DELICIOUS pancakes (MUCH better than Miss Shirley's), gf patty sausage, crispy bacon (done on grill not fryer) Western omelet, gf potatoes, and toasted gf bun. They even have gf sub rolls (NOBODY else except One Dish does subs!!) You can have any sandwich modified to be gf. They have lots of entrees and side dishes that are safe. And on top of all that, you can order breakfast until 3:00, so if hubby wants a hamburger on gf bun and I want some more of those terrific pancakes for lunch, no problem. This place is DA BOMB!!!!
Since I only have to worry about wheat and not all gluten I can afford to be a little less cautious than someone with Celiac's. That said they do seem to be somewhat educated and willing to work with customers on their specific needs. I was allowed to substitute a toasted GF roll for my breakfast toast and they have several options so I don't always have to choose the same thing.
Some reviews mentioned GF pancakes or waffles. I have never seen that on the menu.
offer a gluten free bun which is nice. called in to see what they had for a gluten free breakfast and was told they had pancakes and waffles. we sit down and are told they do not have them. waste of a morning.
It's a good restaurant and they mean well, but they are not always knowledgeable. My daughter has celiac, and the meal they assured us was gluten-free made her sick. In talking with them afterwards, they've tried to adjust, but make sure you talk with those cooking the food directly or get a manager involved. Ask to read the labels yourself.
Many options including wraps, buns, pancakes, knowledgeable staff
