I love sushi but I have a hard time finding sushi restaurants that are aware of Celiac/GF and know what food options they have that qualify. Sushi Heeya opened sometime last year near us and I was hoping to have a new, go-to sushi restaurant. When we visited, I asked as soon as we were seated if they had an allergen/GF menu or if they knew whether the sushi was GF or not. Our server originally said nothing in the restaurant was gluten free (except the GF soy sauce that they brought out to me...I'm not sure what he thought I would be using it on). After talking to the sushi chef, he came back and said I could only eat sashimi. I ended up eating edamame (even though he didn't say it was something I could have) and sashimi. If I had to guess, I would say that they do have several items that are GF, they just don't know or haven't taken the time to figure out which are safe and which aren't. Unless they devote the time to developing an allergen menu or at least informing their servers, I probably won't go back. It just isn't worth the trouble and I can go to other sushi restaurants in the area instead.
