I always love coming here and have had great experiences! It’s definitely worth mentioning to the staff that you have celiac or an allergy because while items may be marked gf, it may come with bread. For example, the beef carpaccio comes with bread on top of it. I always get the risotto instead of pasta because it seems safer.
I’ve had fantastic, knowledgeable waiters here (s/o to Seth) and then some lackluster ones who bring out my order with bread or hand me gluten pasta. Eaten here many times, though, and only been glutened once. Just be diligent and ask questions. Wouldn’t recommend the pizza because of cross contamination but the gluten free pasta is amazing!
Be careful. They claim to have gluten free pasta and pizza but when asked if they make pasta in separate water, at first waitress said she thought so, but she asked and was told they cook pasta in same water with gluten pasta! Not safe to get pasta here. Did get a nice dish of tasty risotto prepared in a separate pan which was good so didn’t leave hungry, but less options than what they touted if need to be strict like me.
They had some gluten free options but overall it was ehh. I’d expect better GF pizza from an Italian restaurant.
I am absolutely blown away by Taverna! I went for a Christmas dinner with work and I was very skeptical going in. Most places that you can sub pizza crust or noodles for the GF version is always a toss up because of cross contamination. But no!! I got the “California” pizza, GF crust and it was not only delish (crust was fluffier than typical GF crust) but it didn’t make me feel bad afterwards! Pizza is one of the foods that I’ll know pretty instantly if I’ll get sick and it’s now been 3 hours and I still feel great! 10/10 recommend!
I asked the server if they had gf items she pointed out the things on the menu without a star were gf. I ordered an omelette that is naturally gf and asked her to mark the order with an allergy. My plate came back with a piece of bread on the plate…the food took so long I just asked for them to remove the dish from the bill and I didn’t eat anything.
Well, to say I was disappointed was a bit of an understatement. I looked on both here and yelp for reviews as my boyfriend and I were in town for the F1 race and I was keen on finding some great options! I saw that this place had good ratings, but it did have quite a few negative reviews in terms of the service quality. We decided to try it because the focaccia was gluten free and I had never had focaccia gluten free.
When we were seated, the waiter informed me (upon my asking) that the cacio e pepe could not be made gluten free, which I had called in advance over a month prior asking if it could be. We ordered the focaccia, the bolognese, and a salad. We needed up waiting over an hour before being told that our food was behind because of a larger party that had come in after us, and that we were not next but coming soon. Because it had been over an hour and the ticket validation had only 2 hours on it, we decided to ask for it to go.
More ensued after that isn’t necessary to discuss in reference to the gluten-free-ness of it all. They were capable of making things gluten free. The pasta was fine, not amazing. It is not made there but bought. The focaccia is just gluten free pizza dough that is baked so it is good gluten free pizza dough but not fluffy focaccia. And the salad was decent. So overall, I was really disappointed. We were celebrating and it felt like even after speaking with the manager they weren’t really invested in how much we actually cared about the service.
So all in all, if you want to try this place and are fine with waiting a while for your food and not the best service, I’d say you have your pick. I am not really one to harp on restaurants and leave bad reviews, but for this being one of the most exciting gluten free spots near us, it was a bit more disappointing that we were willing to take. I’m
I hate to break up the good reviews but unfortunately I got really really sick from here. I had the gluten free focaccia (which just seemed to be a pizza crust with seasoning) and the paglia e fieno pasta dish. The waitress was very scatterbrained and made several other mistakes so I’m not sure if something wasn’t communicated correctly to the kitchen but the fact is that I got very sick from here.
