The only reason this restaurant has a higher then 1 star rating is non celiac individuals are rating it high. Apparently eating gluten free is still trendy... This restaurant caters to those individuals. Beware.
NOT for anyone with Celiac. They don't have dedicated fryers, so even their "Gluten Free" chips aren't really Gluten Free. They have a "gluten sensitive" menu that basically caters to Gluten Free hipsters. Very limited options for things that are truly GF. If you're Celiac or have a Wheat allergy, I wouldn't trust it here.
This place is NOT safe for anyone gluten sensitive or celiac. Shared fryer and almost every item has gluten. They are uneducated and just going with the "gluten free diet craze."
They will take care of gf, just be sure to ask for the gf menu and tell your server.

They have a gluten and other allergy menu that has a good variety! They have gluten free chips and also a free gluten free dessert of cinnamon-sugar (sofapilla style) chips that is very good! Very friendly!!!
My husband has painful reactions to wheat. We explained this to the waitress, she said the manager would come see us. After a moment he showed up and explained exactly how to order to prevent being dosed with wheat/gluten and how they minimize cross contamination. What a blessing!!! Definitely a favorite!!!
After telling the waitress 3 times from arrival to order that I was GF, I received the white corn tortillas from the “not safe” list of their allergy menu. After speaking with the manager and getting the GF corn tortillas, my meal came out - with my cheese enchilada made from the same white corn tortilla I mentioned above. The reason I didn’t give it one star is that they at least have GF menu and the manager was concerned after the fact.
Separate gluten free menu. GF chips. Possible to get a good meal GF and CF.
i have celiac and have eaten here 3 times so far with no issues. MOST of the staff is knowledgeable about gluten and CC. i say most because i think we had a "new" waitress one visit but one of the experienced staff jumped in to assist her. They have a gf menu and the food is delish
Teds has always been one of my favorite restaurants. I was so sad that there gluten free menu didn't have my favorite meal on it. I did ask for a gluten free menu when I walked in the door and the hostess went above and beyond to help me create my favorite meal using the items they have that are gluten free. I am so impressed and so happy that they are so helpful and kind.
If you have reactions to MSG don't go here at all. My only options for food was scoops of guacamole, corn tortillas and steamed veggies. Since I have other food sensitivities it was not good. My husband had the fajitas and the quality was terrible! Save yourself some time and go somewhere else.
The manager was friendly and immediately offered us special gf tortilla chips. I asked if they were fried in a shared fryer. He said they were, but that it wasn't a problem because "the oil is kept extra hot so it doesn't have cross contamination". We turned down the chips, which he was polite about but clearly thought strange, and overall we didn't feel confident in feeding our celiac child.
We were told by multiple managers at both Norman and S. Western location that gluten free chips had a dedicated fryer. Went to S. Western tonight and server told us the contrary. Neither of the 2 managers we spoke with could explain why they even offered separate "gluten sensitive" chips. I told them that if they came from the same fryer, they were exactly the same as the non-"gluten sensitive" ones! They both went into fryer gluten-free and came out of fryer contaminated. Oh, and the "gluten-free" yellow corn tortillas...they are dipped into fryer before serving!! As are the enchiladas made with yellow corn tortillas!! If you truly want your tortillas to be safe, you have to ask manager to microwave them rather than to drop your enchiladas into fryer. The 4 Celiacs in our group went home very hungry this evening.
Unfortunately we had to leave after finding out by our server and confirmed by the manager that their "gluten free" chips were fried in same fryer as their flour products. We have a 3 yr old with celiac disease and he loves chips and salsa, so we knew he would be upset if he couldn't have the chips. We hope that they change this in the future because we would love to be able to eat here!!
Very accommodating! The manager came out to speak with me after I requested a gluten free menu and gave me a rundown of everything they could make for me (even items that weren't on the menu). The staff was very knowledgeable. If only there were more restaurants that were so celiac friendly!
Although Ted's did not have a gluten free menu, they did have a listing of all foods that are not ok depending on allergen. The waitress was very knowledgeable about what I could and could not eat. She even knew the sour cream was not gluten free. My meal came exactly as ordered. I would definitely eat there again.
I have Celiac Disease and the staff at Ted's Escondido Cafe were very knowledgeable about the difference in being Gluten Intolerant and Celiac Disease. Our server had the manager come to our table he assured me that they would make sure my food was gluten free. They went above and beyond. They do have a gluten free menu. I had a ground beef and a cheese enchilada with cheese sauce, refried beans, salsa and queso. They also made sure my chips were gluten free. The house chips aren't. They went above and beyond! We will go back.
I informed my server about having celiac disease and what that meant and how they needed to be very careful. She hands me a gluten SENSITIVE menu (they have no gluten free menu) and it had ONLY THREE options. What I ordered (tortilla soup) ended up being served with the regular chips (not the gluten free chips) in it after I had made sure that I informed her that I could not eat the regular chips because they would make me sick. Not a pleasant experience.
This casual restaurant serves good food and complimentary gluten-free chips, salsa, queso, and for dessert, complimentary gluten-free sopapillas (only restaurant I know of that serves GF sopapillas). At the hostess desk, we asked for a gluten-free menu. Then the manager came to your table to discuss and clarify the several GF menu choices. Our server was knowledgeable and very friendly and attentive. We will definitely return and, based on our one visit, I recommend this restaurant for celiacs. There are three locations in the Kansas City area: Lee’s Summit (where we dined), Liberty, and 135th & Metcalf in KC.
The food is okay. Gluten free menu is limited. After being seated, I requested the gluten free menu. The waitress went for it and upon her return tossed it in front of me and said to be sure and ask for it before being seated next time. The chips are not gluten free. I will not eat at Ted's again.
As we were being seated we mentioned we needed a gluten-free menu. The hostess was very sweet and quick with it and made sure to let our waitress know which ones of us were gluten-free free before she came to our table. She also had freshly made gluten-free corn tortilla chips made and brought to our table. They were fabulous! The staff made those of us that were GF feel just as welcome and important as those who were not. The food was not greasy and was simply delicious! This was our first time going but will not be our last!
Unfortunately the server didn't seem to know anything about what may or may not have flour in it. The "gluten-sensitive" menu indicates the spinach enchiladas are GF as an entree but they are served with crema sauce, which has flour. When I asked if the crema sauce was GF, he said he assumed it was because it was on the "gluten-sensitive menu." My mom then noticed that the allergen list has the crema sauce noted to have flour in it. I ordered the enchiladas with cheese sauce instead. They brought them to me with the crema sauce on it. The manager was apologetic, but it wasn't a good experience. I won't go back.
Great staff. My waiter was very knowledgeable about handling gluten free entrees. They provide gluten free chips and every person has their own individual dipping bowl for salsa/cheese. At one point an entree that had gluten in it hit my salsa bowl, and the waiter immediately apologized and brought me a new salsa to make sure my salsa was gluten free. I had a delicious corn enchilada. Yummy!!!
Ask for gf chips first . Waitress super knowledgeable.
went there about a week and a half ago before my husband was diagnosed celiac and my mother in law is gluten intolerant and had made that very clear to the server and he was rude over talk to advised us that all meat has msg and then proceeded to bring her vegetables that had their fajita seasoning on it which has a gluten in it it was caught by the guy that actually was handing out our place not even the server will not be going back
they cater well to gf but I also have a peanut allergy and I asked tge first time if tge use peanut oil and they said no the sec time I visited I reassured that the Second location did not as well and was informed it is in EVERYTHING they have basically. I was wondering why I had so many issues the evening I dined at the first one. so if you go reconfirm all your info through a manager.
Ted's is a wonderful place to visit if you have Celiac disease! The waitstaff is very helpful and knowledgeable about the gluten free options, plus the manager comes over to make sure everything you order is gluten free. I've never gotten sick eating here nor have I been treated like it's a hassle to serve me.
I love their gluten free chips!!! Everyone I've told them about even if they don't have the food allergy, they enjoy them better than the regular kind!!! They have tamales, enchiladas, they have a few more main dish items and some sides. I wish they could get a fajita seasoning that was gluten free, so I could enjoy those but all in all we love this place!!!
