I am giving this 4 stars because the menu has been changed so that many/most GF options are not indicated. I consider this a drop in service as it requires asking more questions which I don't enjoy and so makes it less likely I will return in the future. Although when we inquired with wait staff they informed us that the same options were available . However they did list two items wings & pizza as CF indicating that they we Celiac Friendly so some may consider this an upgrade. The wings were very good, cheap and the wait staff was knowledgeable on which dressings were gluten free.
Came to visit our daughter at school. Tried The Bar ...OMG. The Gf cheese curds are the bomb!! Our waitress was amazing. The food. Delish and I don’t have to worry about being sick. We will be back. Thank you for having my back.
They have a separate fryer and were very good about keeping things separate. The server was very assuring and knowledgeable. They did have a lot of GF options. I had a cheeseburger (w GF bun) and fries. It was not, however, the greatest meal I've had. The bun tasted like it had been either out or in the freezer for a long time (tasted stale). The burger was ok and the fries had a weird coating and were mostly stuck together. I am not a big drinker, but they do have GF drinks as well. If you are one who wants to be able to eat bar food at a decent sports bar, it's decent, but overall, I think there are better tasting GF options out there - it wouldn't be my first choice.
I first reviewed this place quite a few years ago. It is still a sports bar, lol. But in the past five or more years it has become my go to place for celiac safe fare. I typically get wings and fries, or a burger and fries. In the last two or three months they added fish fry on Fridays and I haven't had fish fry in years, so pretty amazing to get it. Pretty yummy. I note the earlier review re they ran out of batter? Based on timing it may have been the first or second Friday ever of doing GF fish fries for them, so I'd give them some slack. And, oh yeah, another new thing... deep fried cheese curds. Can you sense a theme? They have a dedicated fryer. Their waitstaff are well educated. I don't always get outward symptoms if I've been glutenated but I've eaten here pretty regularly over the years and never gotten reactions like have other places around Wausau that are usually safe. Maybe 6 months ago I asked what was up with them...why the emphasis on celiac safe vs gluten friendly? The server happily told me that one of the owners or one of the owner's wives was celiac. So it was a condition they trained their staff about and took care to provide for in back. Original review from way back when..... It's a sports bar. Not fine dining. But food is good and atmosphere is friendly and low key if the BIG game is not on to amp things up. If you are celiac or GF by choice there are Plenty of options. GF free pizza and buns for burgers. I suspect UDIs. Huge thing for me is the dedicated GF fryer for things like French fries. GF Hot wings. They even make sure the ketchup and mustard and dressings are gluten free.
BEST gluten free options I’ve seen in a long time including gf cheese curds! The waitress/bartender didn’t know answers to all my questions but was very accommodating to communicate with the kitchen staff. Separate fryer too so I could safely eat the fries!
The quality here has decreased significantly since last time I visited. Their website advertises GF deep fried battered fish on Fridays. They had no batter available, and, from what it sounded like, the waitresses didn't even know that was an option. That were very unapologetic about it, and wouldn't even bring out the manager when I asked you talk to someone. The broiled fish was all they had for date GF fish, and it was bland and unappetizing. The cheese curds were still good, and that's about the only redeeming factor to that visit.
Went here with our two Celiac daughters (7 and 5). The bartender and wait staff was very knowledgeable and made sure to walk through the menu and take precautions to prevent cross contamination. They have a dedicated fryer and the burgers, fries and GF wings were delicious. More important...no one got sick!
Excellent choices. The fried cheese curds were excellent. We ordered chicken tenders as well and they were the not so great frozen ones so avoid the tenders. Still many delicious options! They also offer mozzarella sticks and onion rings, sandwiches and pizza. Tons to choose from.
Great service, awesome spicy bbq chicken wings, good wine. The GF items are $1.99 more than the other items, so I had to skip the cheese curds to stay in budget. :( Really liked the upbeat attitude of the staff and enjoyed our little GF date.
OMG, I may just move into this place. They have gf cheese curds like everyone else mentioned, but they also have gf mozz sticks, gf onion rings, gf fish fry, nearly everything can be done gf. I had the fish fry and it was amazing. It honestly was better than most regular fish fries. HIGHLY recommend!!
A+++++ The Bar is like heaven on earth for a celiac like myself. Dedicated gluten free fryers and very knowledgeable. The gluten free food is ACTUALLY great, not lacking flavor or texture at all. Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone and everyone.
If you’re looking for a safe burger place, this is your spot!! Now, I would have to mention this “The Bar” does not fry up mozz sticks and such. They do not have the batter. Still great to eat, but missed the extra stuff
Wings are great. No gf cheese curds at this location sadly. There us at the Lyndale location in Appleton. Tower of fries were not good. Service was horrible. Absolutely horrible. They were short staffed for a Packer Sunday. Seriously... I never saw my server til we had to go to the bar to tell him to get our server. I will probably never go to this location again.
So nice to find a GF option around here. We had a burger with a gf bun, French fries and a gf pizza. All good and hard to come by in these parts, much less in a sports bar. (We sat outside next to the fire pit.)
I was in town for a conference and visited The Bar from the rave reviews. I ordered the chicken sandwich with a gf bun. It came, my inner gut said it wasn't gf took two bites and the waitress assured me it was GF. I decided not to eat the bun but finished the chicken. A few hours later I was sick. They use Udi's bread...I did not get Udi's...I have had Udi's products numerous times before. The waitress was very unfriendly and combative. I dont think I will return
