Weirdest experience. Checked the website before going and it clearly has references to the entire place being gf. Showed up and the bartender told us ‘we have pop up’s in our kitchen, we’re not serving food today’ I’m not sure if they have different gf pop ups or what but they weren’t serving any food today, never mind gf food

Staff very knowledgeable about GF/ celiac and cross contamination requirements. Can confirm this place DOES have a gluten free fryer. Majority of the menu is gluten free. Very great food!

Update: there is no gluten free fryer so there aren’t really many/any options for food.
A couple people who work here have celiac disease though so there is a nice gluten free drink menu and a couple of really great gf beer options!!

Staff was polite and accommodating!
It got a little confusing with the division between food and drink services, not only between the separate servers but also when paying the bill. The business website hasn’t been updated to reflect current establishment operations. The website touts an owner with Celiac disease in a dedicated GF kitchen. The offerings showcased on the website aren’t what is being offered. The kitchen has been sourced out, and is operating as a “pop up” kitchen with inconsistent menu options/offerings. Our experience wasn’t bad, just less than our expectations. The most recent reviews of this business posted here reflect a more accurate description than the business website itself.

Agree with other recent reviewers about them now offering pop up menus, so options will vary. The night we went, I was able to order French fries from a dedicated fryer and a creole salad. The waiter said the owner has celiac, so I felt comfortable that the staff was knowledgeable about what was safe for me to order. It’s a cool bar, had live music the night we went.

My friend is Celiac and its hard to find places to eat w him. We absolutely love this place. They have recently gone to pop ups only, but still offer gluten free options. Check it out even if you dont go for food. Great atmosphere and vibes. Always have a DJ or sone kind of event. Beautiful bar
Love it love it love it !!
Came in with my partner and we had a great time with the staff and the other guests.
Some fully gluten free beers. A lite one and an ipa’s on top of a good amount of ciders
We saw the menu trouble in the reviews but the staff told us that they have the pop up kitchens offer one gluten free option at the least but some pop ups have been fully gluten free.

May No Longer Be GF!! They switched to a pop-up kitchen in January '24 some time and have not updated their website. No idea what the pop-ups offer. Was counting on dinner at this place before a show and walked in to be told there was no food tonight. The bartender knew nothing about gf and said there were no options within walking distance. Thankfully, a quick Google search pointed me toward a pizza place on the next block with gf options.

Super cool place. Delicious food. If you hadn’t told me, I would not have believed it was gluten free. Great place and super safe to eat here. The burger is so good!!

Dedicated gluten free kitchen, so automatically safe, but even if I didn’t have celiac I would go here because the food and vibes are so good. Excellent spot, wish we had more places like this.

Very cool bar and eatery next door to St. Andrews Hall music venue. Yes, this place is COMPLETELY gluten free. Ground Breakers gf beer—lager and IPA. Good stuff. We had their gf chicken tenders. They were so damned yummy. Moist with a delectably crunchy coating. We also had lightly battered calamari. I was in hog heaven! This will be a must-visit eatery whenever I’m in Detroit.

This is a bar next door to St. Andrew’s Hall, but has a dedicated gluten free kitchen due to the owner having celiac disease! Mostly sandwiches and fries, and it was so nice to be able to choose from the whole menu and know it was all safe.

Dedicated gluten free kitchen!!! I was absolutely giddy when I learned this. Told the waiter I had celiacs and they were so reassuring. The chef and assistant manager also chatted with us. Everyone was so friendly. 100/10 recommend and I will now eat there every time I visit the city.

One of the best restaurant experiences I've had in a long time! The food is delicious, the service was amazing (friendly and fast), and the owner Andrew is awesome (has celiac too). Wish it was in my hometown.

Food was okay. It was gluten free so I appreciate that. It’s nice to know the KITCHEN is safe. Deduction of two stars for two reasons:
1) bartender/server had no clue what was in the salad. Asked if there was cheese and she responded, “do you want cheese?” Funny, yes. But also just a little flippant for a place that boasts the GF status of the kitchen.
2) this is HUGE to me—they serve BEER. I literally watched the bartender carrying two spilling beers to a table. The beer was all over her hands and spilling everywhere. Now, sure, maybe she washed her hands and they clean up well. But don’t tell me this place is dedicated GF when they serve products with gluten in them.
Nobody seemed very friendly or happy to be there. I don’t need you to be full of fake energy, but it just felt like trying to walk through the cool kids in the hallway during high school as the nerdy quiet kid who just wanted to get to class. Like, how dare you inconvenience Becky by asking her to move a little to the left so you can get around her and Stacy talking trash about Jenny 🙄
All in all, it was okay. Chips and salsa were good—not $7 good, but tasty. I had the salad with chicken, it was fine except these weird ass tiny Brazilian peppers they put in there. Would have been nice to know they were in there so I could 86. Boyfriend had the burger. GF bun was a basic, hard, dense, not great bun. He said the burger was fine. Fries were good.

They are now fully gluten free! I’ve gotten the fried chicken sandwich with fries multiple times, and it is sooo good (just be sure to ask for extra sauce because sometimes they don’t put enough). The chicken is crispy and the fries are perfectly seasoned. Love it here!

Dedicated gluten free restaurant. The food was fantastic. We had the chips and salsa, the spinach dip and the chicken fingers and fries - everything was really good. Honestly, you haaave to try the spinach dip!!! The best part is knowing everything is 100% gluten free and safe. If you are anywhere near the area, this is a MUST stop. If you’re downtown for a game, this is a perfect spot for before or after (only about a 10/15 minute walk from both parks).

Best chicken tenders I’ve ever had and they’re gluten free! Granted I haven’t had chicken tenders in a decade bc they’re never gf but the chicken was so tender and juicy with good crispy skin on the outside. Fries were your typical fries and beer went well with both. Really friendly staff and good vibes.

I will be back!! I was super excited try the chicken tenders as I haven’t had fried chicken for several years and Elephant Room did not disappoint! The chicken was tender and the breading had the perfect crispy ratio. The fries were also delicious and I had such a piece of mind knowing they have a dedicated GF kitchen. I was able to speak with the owner as well (who is also celiac) and understands the necessary precautions, WITHOUT there being lack of flavor or quality! I couldn’t recommend this establishment enough and can’t wait to go back and try more!

This place is phenomenal! The wait staff is so-so, but the kitchen knows their stuff, and if you tell them you have celiac or a severe gluten allergy, they'll be sure to take care of you. They make such delightful gluten-free food in a very safe kitchen. I've eaten here twice with zero issues. Delicious cocktails too! Their menu changes/rotates so there's always something new and delicious to try!

We had reservations on Friday evening. The waitstaff were also the bartenders and we were not assigned one person. Multiple people were helping with our orders. I tried to tell all of the people I had celiac when ordering. I ordered the Salmon BLT gluten free bread.
When it arrived the bread looked too good to be true. So I inquired and it was a different person being meal out (someone from the back). So I told him I had celiac and would need a whole new meal. They they couldn’t transfer the food to a new bun. He insisted they would get it right for me telling me the owner has celiac too so they understand.
What annoyed me is the person that took our order and input the order wrong never even noticed or apologized. I expected better from this spot.

I usually love this place bc it is so good for celiacs however my mom went recently and got super sick. She ordered a gluten free sandwich and made sure they knew it was an allergy. When it was brought out the bun looked different and so she was like this is gluten free right? And the waiter said yes so she ate it. A couple hours later she was violently ill and was unable to keep food down for a few days after. It seemed like they were short staffed so if you go make sure to quadruple check that your food is safe.

Had dinner here and it was a great, accommodating experience. They brought out separate chips for me to go with the bean dip since I couldn’t have the pita. The grilled shrimp Po Boy with Gf bun was good and the fries were in a fryer that only does fries, so it was GF. When serving my food the waiter announced that it was a Gf order which helped me know they didn’t forget. Didn’t feel sick after, overall a good experience!

The food was disappointing. My wife's calamari was dry and my food had a heavy breading that did not go well with the light, delicate whitefish.

I have never felt more welcome at an establishment! The staff was great and I could eat everything on the menu!! A huge deal for someone with celiac. I notified the staff of my dietary restrictions and they went above and beyond to make sure I did not get sick. Everything tasted amazing. I felt like a normal person again being able to eat gluten free food that was still delicious. I can’t remember the last time I had fried breaded fish! The owner has celiac as well and he made sure to come over to check on everything. The drinks were great too. We ended up drinking there all night. I want to visit Detroit again just to go back to The Elephant Room. We had such a great time we ended up going twice during our stay.
