Ordered pickup from the website and clarified that I have a gluten allergy no cross contamination (celiac disease but people are more used to hearing allergy). My sushi rolls were covered in something that was not avocado or salmon it looked like the crunchy flake toppings. Also they didn't give us any of the sauce we ordered and paid extra for, and they gave us 1 set of chopsticks for 3 people. Maybe dining in is better.
Ate one day ago with extreme celiac diagnose. Staff all so very accomplished and understood the concern I had. Each option reviewed by the chef before it was given the ok to order. Food as very good wil no reaction. Little pricey but that is well worth it. Would definitely go if you want a great night.
As of Oct 2024, they do not have a designated fryer. I guess someone made a mistake and contaminated the GF fryer. No fries for a 7 year old after already ordering the. was a disappointment, but not the end of the world. They seem knowledgeable and are required to run meals by the chef if you tell them you have an allergy. So thankfully that saved us from the fries. You have sushi options (GF soy sauce) and can get the burger and a couple other sandwiches with a GF bread.
Dessert was an adventure in education. We were told there were no GF milkshakes available due to the machine being down. The waitress said the apple gallette was now GF but when I asked about the oat crumble they said they could leave it off. It came on top anyway and was taken back and then brought back with a guarantee from the pastry chef that it was 100% GF. I pushed, much to the annoyance of the waitress, to confirm the oats were certified GF. She eventually came back and apologized saying they weren't and just didn't know oats had to be certified GF to be GF.
I appreciated their effort and my daughter did not get sick, but it wasn't as easy a GF dining as other reviewers experienced .
Travelling to DC from Canada and this was a truly amazing experience.
There are lots of gluten-free options - from soups to burgers to sushi and more! However, what made this truly special was the level of attention and service. When I shared I have Celiac the server spoke to the chef about each and every item I ordered before coming back to confirm. She did do the warning they can’t guarantee no cross contamination BUT that the chef would personally ensure it was prepared as safely as possible. My food came with allergy flags (wooden sticks) in them and on different coloured plates. Everything was delicious :)
The server even made recommendations for gluten free seltzers I could enjoy!!
I was hungry for a burger so we went to the Hamilton as it had gluten free items on the menu. Ask the server about some items and she informed me she would check with the chef on anything I ordered, including the French fries which she stated were done in a separate fryer. The server gave me several samples of red wine to go with the meal. Great burger, gluten free bun ok. Wonderful small salad with burger.
Went for lunch, party of 4. Went for the gluten free options since one person has celiac’s disease. Attention to the allergy was clear and the accommodations/availability were all the menu, good to see. Truffle fries were fantastic and nice and hot. I’m not GF and my BLT was delicious (damn near perfect), but one person’s burger was overcooked past their requested temp. The GF bun on the short rib sandwich was soft and when tasted by those that aren’t GF - consensus was that it was as good as any other normal bun. Service was a little slower than expected for what we got and it being lunch on a Saturday (busy, but not at all full), but the ambiance was nice - upscale casual.
Food was good, my daughter has severe celiac. We were ensured the fries were safe (she said they were so good). She also got a salad with chicken. The waiter was very knowledgeable about celiac, cross contamination etc. her food came out with an allergy flag which was nice to see. She did end up getting sick. Which is really unfortunate as they did seem very careful.
This review is for The Hamilton Live, the concert venue, not the restaurant. The concert venue is one of those where you are seated family style and can/have to get dinner before or during the show. The menu is much shorter than the online menu for the restaurant. The only gf dish is the garden salad, but upon request the nachos and tacos were gf as well. The nachos were good.
My family and I had a great experience at this restaurant. The menu is clearly labeled with a lot of gluten free options. My food came out with little flags that said “allergy,” so I know they take preparation and handling seriously. I had a salad and added some simply grilled salmon. It was cooked to perfection.
If I didn’t have a corn allergy, I would have also enjoyed some other things on the menu. They had truffle fries labeled GF. My husband said they were amazing. I can’t have them because there is likely corn in the fryer.
We went out to dinner here 6/28 and our server Amanda was incredible. Her first question was re: allergies and she made a point to not only discuss with the chef but to also let us know that she had done so after ordering and when our food came out and that it was all safe. She had perfect recommendations for our non gf folks too. No one got sick and everyone had an amazing meal!
This was a disappointment and dangerous. Our waiter asked for allergies. I explained my ten-year-old daughter's need to avoid gluten and cross contact. He made notes. She ordered the gluten free bun with the cheeseburger but was not able to get the fries since as the waiter informed us they are not cooked separately.
My daughter was served a gluten bun with her cheeseburger. She almost took a bite before I stopped her because it didn't look right. I tried a bite and it clearly seemed to be a gluten bun. I called the waiter over and said the bun didn't look gluten free and asked him to check. He immediately shook his head and took the plate but left the fruit bowl that was on the same plate.
It took so long for us to get a replacement. We had to ask a few times for the waiter to check. By the time her burger came out, everyone was finished eating. She was close to tears. There was no apology or offer to cut money from our bill. We spent a lot of money and almost had a disastrous glutening experience.
The chef and manager spoke to me stating the sushi is NOT SAFE for people with celiac disease. The risk of cross contamination is present and they would not recommend for folks with celiac disease. I spoke to them for about 15 minutes after, explaining the high reviews on FMGF, and collected some info for the community - they stated they could prepare something outside of the menu (e.g., a seared fish with a simple salad, or pan roasted chicken), but even if there is a GF symbol, the cross contamination risk is present with menu items. I appreciated them SO MUCH for this. We have visited The Hamilton for years for various parties and events, but I never had the pleasure of dining with them before I was diagnosed. Nevertheless, the care and concern they took with me to not have me be exposed to gluten was a 10/10. Maybe folks had a different chef when visiting??
As soon as we were seated our waitress asked if there were any dietary restrictions and I told her I have celiacs. There are not too many items marked on the menu GF, but the ones that are marked makes for a wide variety of dishes. I opted for the classic cheeseburger and asked if the fries were fried separately and she confirmed they were so I took a chance (and it turned out good!). I also got a side of gratin potatoes because I couldn’t remember the last time I had those and also had no issues with those! Ended with a mint milkshake!
95 percent of the time this app is spot on and can find safe restaurants for a Celiac to eat anywhere in the US. Unfortunately, the previous high ratings for the Hamilton in Washington, DC are completely inaccurate. I ordered a medium well steak that came out rare twice and declined on giving them a 3rd chance because it was an hour past my 5 year old son’s bedtime, who ordered macaroni and cheese , which took nearly an hour and half to come out. I have massive migraine after eating their”gluten free fries”, while waiting for my steak to come out cooked. I confronted manager who barely compensated us for having to order dinner at our hotel restaurant. I would rate this a half star and completely overrated compared to the wonderful restaurants on this site, which have allowed me an opportunity to travel upon receiving my diagnosis. Save your precious time and find somewhere else to eat.
Disappointing experience. Things on the menu marked Gluten free were not all safe for celiacs. The fries are NOT in a dedicated fryer and the shakes cannot be safely made gluten free. My daughter’s sushi had crunchy tempura on the side of it. The manager apologized and re-made it. But I would say if you are a sensitive celiac, avoid this place.
Good was very tasty and it’s a cool atmosphere. Our server asked right away if there were any food allergies and when I said gluten he followed up to ask if celiac or not. He was able to answer my question about the fryer and my food came out clearly marked, by a separate server than the rest of the food. I’m celiac and had NO problems. Great meal!
I really enjoyed my Steak Frites (NY Strip, French fries, watercress, and shallot-Dijon cream sauce). It was comforting that the servers knew without having to check that there is a dedicated fryer for the fries. The Steak Frites and a few other items on the menu were marked GF and my food came out with an allergy stick. However, our waiter ignored us for 30 minutes before we ended up asking another waiter to take our table instead and even then the service continued to be slow after that. The food was tasty but the service left more to be desired. It was packed in there, so maybe it was just a busy night for them.
It was OK
They are gluten, friendly, not gluten-free. So I still had to double check to make sure they could accommodate dishes marked gluten free for someone with a Celiac that limited the choices.
The food was OK. I’ve had better meals, but it wasn’t awful. And we did get put back in a dining room at seem to be reserved for families with children, so that someone killed the ambiance.
I did not get sick
Food and atmosphere were great! Wonderful attention to detail with the “allergy” order and communication with the chef. We are a party of 7, so we know our food takes a little longer, but it was very slow. Restaurant lunch crowd cleared out and we finally got food once it was nearly empty. We did appreciate how careful they were! The dedicated fryer for French Fries was down, so no fries for us.
Had an awesome meal at The Hamilton! There aren’t a ton of marked GF items on the menu, but I was interested in the steak so I didn’t ask many questions about what else could possibly be made GF. They have a dedicated fryer for fries and all food comes out with an allergy flag in it which is reassuring. They also have GF soy sauce for sushi. Our server was so nice and knowledgeable as well!
Walked in for lunch and was so happy we did! Great offerings for GF and the waiter and staff were aware of it. Had a great lunch and broad menu!
We ate here twice. First time I got the steak frites and it was so amazing, loved the sauce and French fries. The waiter we had was very good at double checking with the kitchen that everything was gluten free. Cocktail seemed to be lacking alcohol so that was disappointing.
Our server said they have one fryer for fries and one for other items, but they are next to each other and there is a chance of cross contamination. He said “it should be fine, unless you are severe celiac”. I didn’t risk it because celiac is celiac and I didn’t want to be sick on my vacation. I had the rainbow roll and it was good, but I’d order two rolls next time instead of just one as it didn’t really fill me up for dinner. They had GF soy sauce.
Got the Steak Frites, came out with an allergy marker and was very good. Explained possibilities of cross contamination at first but came back out to say they spoke with the chef and he would take care of it. Excellent place! Get reservations though. Waited about an hour for a table.
Very happy! We ate at a number of places in downtown DC that had great tasting food, but this is hands down the best place for a great atmosphere and service. Yummy GF sushi and fries. Highly recommend getting a reservation…we went on a Monday at 6:30 and the place was full. Wonderful atmosphere and not as pricey as you’d expect.
Menu is labeled with gf for gluten friendly items. The waiter asked right away about allergies and reminded us that it is not a gluten free kitchen.. however, he checked with chef to ensure the items we ordered were celiac safe. We we warned of a potential cross contamination for one of our sushi orders. They also had gf soy sauce available for the sushi. All gf orders came out with an allergy tooth pick in it to confirm not was gf safe.
