So amazing. I had tiramisu for the first time since going gluten free, and it was just as good as I remember. The cupcakes are the best GF ones I've ever had. And, the ham, cheese, and egg crepe with potatoes on the side was great! I wish I lived closer! (On a side note, my mom tried to call and email ahead of time about making an order and never heard back from them.)
So glad we found this place! Friendly, helpful staff and DELICIOUS food. So excited that I could order anything I wanted on the menu and not have to ask questions. Breakfast was plentiful. We had eggs, pancakes(yes!!!), ham, sausage, hashbrowns and a biscuit( I don’t know when the last time was that I had a biscuit and this one was perfect.). It was my birthday and the first time in years I got to have a gluten free cupcake that was tasty and fresh! German Chocolate💛. To have so many choices was heaven. So delicious!! We will make sure we plan our trip up north each time to come back & visit. Thanks for a perfect breakfast on this rainy morning
Absolutely amazing. I am a very sensitive celiac who really misses strawberry, banana Nutella crepes from my gluten days and this place made my dreams come true again!! Everything was delicious! The only thing that saddens me is the location closest to us is no longer open but it was well worth the 25 min drive. Go enjoy!
The Happy Tart is a 100% gluten free bakery. The owner, Emma, has Celiac Disease and has set up two locations in Falls Church and Del Ray. The Falls Church location has a full brunch menu that is totally delicious. My daughter always gets the pancakes and eggs, and I love the coconut and strawberry french toast. They also do a stellar job with custom cakes—they made a 3D birthday cake for my husband that looked just like a stack of waffles.
I wholeheartedly agree with another reviewer (DukeCeliac). --A lot of what this place offers is just okay. --They have weird hours. I went to Elevation Burger nearby and wanted to pick up some dessert to take home, but they were closed. I absolutely appreciate that they are a safe place for celiacs to eat, but it rarely feels worth it for what I get and what I pay.
This place is one of the few 100% safe options in the area, and I really appreciate that. Some of their foods (i.e. the ham and cheese crepe, the apple crepe, the pot pie, the chocolate chip cookies, chocolate decadence petit four, etc.) are REALLY good, but a lot of it is just okay. Just okay isn't really that okay for their prices. But what really, truly frustrates me about The Happy Tart is that it seems like this place is NEVER open. Sometimes I drive all the way there and it's just closed. And even their regular business hours are annoying--it's unclear how anyone who has a full-time job would get to the store before 6pm when they close. It's a nice bakery if you're in town, but as a local, The Happy Tart is honestly only okay.
So so awesome. Full service bakery for us GF folks. Worth a long drive to get here. Our family consensus was 17 stars out of 5. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the scone. On the other hand, I never liked gluteny scones that much either. The carrot cake cupcake, the salted caramel petit-four, and the nutella-banana cupcake were all AWESOME. The baguette is in the freezer for a later treat.
I’m so glad we found this wonderful bakery while visiting D.C. I was totally a kid in a candy store when we visited and tried several different items. The cupcakes were the best gluten free that I have found. I did not feel like I was settling with any of the bakery treats that I had because they were all delicious. I will definitely be back on my next trip.
You're crazy if you DON'T go here. Dedicated GF facility, awesome pastries. Everyone in the world should eat here, Celiac or not! Hands down my favorite bakery. I'm pretty sure everything has a little magic in it... Have a macaron. hell, have 6 macarons.,\. Never mind, just get one of everything and stuff your face.
Absulately GF haven. We tried the chees, ham and cheese, pizza, nutella and strawberries pancakes, and the Bûche de Noël they were all really tasty. Also they had a proper tea that is served in a pot 😄 Looking forward to visit them again when we are in the area.
Highly recommend this dedicated bakery with indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was patient as my large family ordered. I Our family favorites include the chocolate chip cookie, cupcake pop, spinach puffed pastry, and pecan tart. Everything was fresh and delicious on a Sunday early afternoon. Overall, the best gluten free bakery.
I am so grateful for this wonderful space! It is charming, everything is delicious, and it is so refreshing to go somewhere and not have to ask questions or special order. We are very fond of the savory crepes and the lentil and kale soup. We are also having our wedding cake and desserts made here, and the price surprised us - amazing value for beautiful work and delicious treats.
They run out of certain pastries quickly just fyi. I try to go early morning to pick out what I want like their Spinach Leek Turnovers and French Apple Tarts. You can call ahead to see if they ran out of a specific pastry. I don't recommend eating their fondant covered cookies because they could be old... I never ordered a crepe, but will do so in the future. I usually order desserts to go but never had any issues with customer service. Their desserts are delicious, personally I love (Tiramisu, Opera, Red Velvet Cupcakes, Spinach & Leek Turnover, Macaroons, Apple Pies, Apple Tarts, Cheesecake, Fruit Tarts) Their turnovers taste like are not gluten free, wish I knew their recipe. They use nuts in some of their pastries, so always ask. There are parking garages with free parking.
The staff here are great, and the food is very good. Ask about xanthan if you get gummy tummy. Avoid the sauces at the table.as they have vinegars that aren't really GF. Ask to make sure any salad dressings don't have while vinegar. I didn't ask about what brand of flours they use and if they are milled in a dedicated facility, so I can't 100% call this shop Celiac Friendly.
I typically don't bother writing poor reviews of places ,especially small businesses, but today's experience had me compelled to share my experience. After waiting in line (I was next) for a couple to complete their order with a few people assisting (searching for items missing etc), I was next in line to order what was in the display case (set out, looked available to order as I thought). I was waiting long enough that several people behind me left. The couple was done, the person assisting walked off and I continued to wait very patiently (even with a friendly smile). Another person came out and began to empty items in the display case and bring them in the back, eliminating one item I was going to order. When I ordered, I got a half shrug by both the person assisting as well as the owner that the item was going out for another order. Why was it displayed if it was promised to someone else? I was told it wasn't mine to order (but if someone has helped me obviously it would have been mine....). It wasn't even a genuine I am sorry, let us compensate you, or anything. Last year I even ordered my wedding cake from this bakery and I am a familiar face as I've been supporting this business for the past 4 years in Del Ray and Falls Church. To me, It feels they got too big too fast and have forgotten about the customers who have gotten them there. Next time offer something up like a discount, free item when you burn a customer. That is what good business owners do, especially in small communities like Falls Church City.
Amazing! I ate here once & said " this is what happens when a master pastry chef gets Celiac Disease." I had no idea at the time that's exactly what happened. The owner spent 20 yrs perfecting GF pastries, and she well succeeded. I'm a try GF snob, & I was truly impressed. The prices are really good for the DC area. The shop is adorable & the employees helpful & friendly. I went in this a.m. & bought an entire bag of goodies to take on the plane back to Alaska w/ me! Great job guys!!! Way to raise the bar!
I was so excited to try this bakery and it was definitely worth the trip. I got three cupcakes: triple lemon, carrot cake and almond raspberry. They were amazing!!!! I also got some chocolate chip cookies, which were also wonderful. The english muffin rolls were pretty good too.
