I have been going to The Happy Tart for many years now. It’s very relaxing to know that Celiacs can eat safely here. Food is delicious! I order my holiday meals and desserts from here. I recommend this place, and hope that a new owner (Yes, Emma is selling the place) will maintain the same high quality we Celiacs rely on. It’s wonderful to eat breakfast or lunch here, as well as get take out.
Great restaurant. One of the the few gluten-free facilities in the area. I like to get the omelet with potatoes and a biscuit. Crepes and macrons are delicious too. My kids love to get their cake pops.
I just wish the store were open longer. Opening at 9 and closing at 3 means it's really only available for brunch and lunch.
Tried a cupcake and scone. Scone tasted like cardboard, cupcake was moist and fluffy. The employees are unfriendly, I was given an attitude for asking for a menu online… will maybe give it another chance but I don’t purchase from mean people. Hope you have a better experience! Buckwheat is their base flour, FWIW.
Love coming here. They have a wonderful selection of treats and also plenty of savory dishes you can order fresh (try the crepes!)
My first time visiting, and I can’t believe I waited so long! I grabbed a few cupcakes to take to my sisters birthday party tonight (since I’m the only GF and can’t have birthday cake) also a still warm from the oven loaf of brioche and a frozen baguette to take home. The brioche was incredible and fluffy and a chunk of it didn’t make it home as I couldn’t wait to try it! I can’t wait to try more of the yummy things on my next visit!
Amazing restaurant! 100% gluten free! Definitely will find my way back.to Happy Targ when in DC!
It was such a delight to walk in and find out that EVERYTHING was GF!!! I had the GF Fungi Crepe...spectacular. My boyfriend had a breakfast sandwich on an english muffin. He said it didn't taste any different, high praise!!! The decor is fun and eclectic! Will be going back for sure!
So this place is worth the drive out of DC!
The environment: Cute little cafe/bistro with lounge area.
The staff: Service was great. Nice people and willing to help.
The food: We got multiple things. The Nutella/strawberry Crepe and the banana/Nutella crepe were very good.
The biscuits/gravy-the biscuits taste a little different but were good and flaky. The gravy was not your typical sausage gravy. It was savory, with sausage and mushrooms-almost a little cheesy tasting.
The pancakes were VERY good!
Good size portions too!
The baked goods:
Macarons were very good.
It’s worth the drive and worth getting away from the busy DC area for a few minutes.
This place is wonderful. I came in from out of town to stay in an air bnb in Annandale, so ordered a week in advance and got a lasagna, pizza, eclairs, baguettes and so I had meals to heat up at home. The key lime pie was incredible. We went for breakfast twice during the week, and the crepes are perfection, great teas and coffees. If you are wondering about ordering or quality, don’t hesitate and just buy it all! Worth it!
I second the reviewer that said the Happy Tart made them feel normal…it’s so nice to be able to get breakfast out like I used to before my diagnosis. Omelettes are great and the biscuits are pretty good. The food and selection are good enough that my (non-celiac) wife and son view it like just another breakfast place, which is high praise.
So safe, 100% gluten free. Best gluten free pastries I’ve had anywhere. The savory crepes were amazing. Your never know it’s gluten free. So good.
My daughter in law found this place for me and when we visited from Australia it was a must. Had a quiche which was yummy and loved the pastry. Took a couple of cup cakes home which were also yummy. My son drove back ( about 15 minutes) a few days later and got some more for me , god bless him. Looking at other reviews it seems it is a popular place which is great for the owners. 100% GF
Although this was a bit of a drive from where we were staying, it was well worth it! We ate breakfast- omelette and hashbrowns, egg, bacon and hashbrown meals and sweet crepes. All delicious. What a blessing to eat a meal where everything is safe. We returned the next day to buy pastries for the trip home. A seriously good find for Celiac’s on the road. FYI-we visited at 9:30 am (they opened at 9am) on Saturday morning, and seating was almost impossible to find and there was quite a long line to place an order. It was evident many people arrived at opening and 45 minutes later, tables were starting to turn over.
A wonderful place. They have amazing GF pastry also quiche, pancakes and crepes.
