I have no idea why this place has such great ratings. Wasted a night on my New York trip here. I was admittedly a little excited when we first got our starting dishes because the tacos and popcorn chicken were decent, but then the other things we got arrived and they were just awful. The onion rings were a greasy mess and had no “salt and vinegar” on them at all, not even any salt or seasoning - just grease, like so much grease that I was up all night not feeling well. Then the “nashville hot chicken” sandwich was just a dry piece of fried chicken with pickles and onions - didn’t even have any hot sauce on it which was confusing, unless they just forgot to put it on they should just call it a fried chicken sandwich? It also smelt like it was fried in oil that was weeks old or something. Anyway, don’t go here unless you want an upset stomach afterwards, even though it’s completely gluten free if you’re sensitive when eating a lot of fats/oils/grease definitely stay far away.
Ate there last night, and the food was delicious! It’s been years since I’ve had g/f onion rings and these were amazing! I went with two friends who don’t have to eat g/f and they were also impressed with how good the food was. Drinks were also good, and service was solid. Will definitely be back.
Food was okay.
What was good:
-Peruvian ceviche
-Crispy Brussels sprouts
-Ribeye skewer
-Singapore noodles
-Bronzino
Not so good:
-Eggplant schnitzel was awful. I felt like I was eating oily fried crisps. Didn’t taste any eggplant, let alone see it once you cut it, all I rated was oil.
-Salt n vinegar onion rings (went because of someone’s post on insta), didn’t taste any salt or vinegar. It wasn’t that bad in terms of onion rings, but was expecting salt and vinegar taste from the rave she gave on her post.
-Salmon carpaccio was overly sweet
-Dumplings were bland
As a celiac and big MB&B fan, I looked forward to finally going to Thyme and Tonic. We had a pretty weird overall. It seems as though it’s possibly being rebranded as “Prime Thyme” and has a new chef. The majority of the menu that was marked vegan is now in fact not, but they haven’t printed new menus yet. We waited a while to be seated even though there were plenty of tables and waitstaff. Then we sat unattended for a while and had to flag down our waiter multiple times. Never offered beverages, but luckily they eventually gave us water. It took a while to figure out what was egg and soy safe (they have Just Egg but our party member had a soy allergy). She basically had one solid option (fish tacos). All of our food was served room temp and not hot. As a celiac, this experience was not a comfortable one as I was not confident that my food was actually gf due to their new chef and all of the other “changes” they kept telling us. I will not be going back again and was very disappointed in this visit.
I used to love this place and it has gone so downhill. They change their menu constantly and it gets less and less allergen friendly (for other dietary needs). The tall man who serves is very obsessive and constantly hovers and comes over. He’s not friendly either. This was my favorite spot for years and I no longer go
Yes, this place is dedicated gluten-free, but that’s about all it has going for it. I have celiac. My sister keeps kosher. Thyme and Tonic should be a perfect fit for us…but after one bad meal too many, it’s become the restaurant we Don’t Go To. I’m the biggest Modern Bread & Bagel fan, but Thyme & Tonic is a miss. The menu is a mass of dense, breaded, and tasteless foods, including some terrible renditions of various “ethnic” dishes. (Their pad thai, now thankfully removed from the menu, was most reminiscent of noodles and ketchup.) I’ve eaten there probably five or six times and never had a good dish. Instead, I head to Modern next door and eat literally any of the delicious options on their dinner menu. Half the price, twice as good.
This restaurant is great! Everything here is dedicated gluten and dairy free! I had the Crispy Chicken Sandwich with fries, and both tasted good. Only complaint is that they were both extremely greasy, so I ended up feeling slightly sick.
I want to love this place so bad but I just can’t.
To have all these options is wonderful in theory but in practice it’s just not good.
My partner and I went around 7pm on Saturday 1/4/25. We both ordered the Nashville hot chicken sandwiches. He doesn’t eat meat so he ordered his vegan. On instagram they showed pictures of their chicken sandwiches and they looked delicious with the sauces and how crispy they looked but also how they advertised that the ones in those pics are actually vegan!
When we got our sandwiches not only was it not freshly made (it was barely even room temp) but there was no hot Nashville sauce on the chicken and no green garlic ranch either (like the menu said). It was just a plain dry chicken sandwich.
Also the vegan one looked absolutely nothing like advertised on their instagram. (I know how food ads work but this is not a corporate fast food chain with a staging staff, they just posted a pic of the sandwich) his sandwich was a thick slab of deep fried tofu on bread and it had no sauce, no ranch, and no flavor.
I was so confused and disappointed for him. He managed to choke down half because of the price of the sandwich. To charge $28 for that is pretty crazy. (Photos attached)
The fries were great! To be expected in a restaurant. The onion rings were good but you can only have 1 or 2 bc of the amount of oil in each bite. Similar to the churros, they were absolutely soaked in oil and unfortunately I could not even finish the churro that I bit into. I know I didn’t get sick from gluten here but I definitely did from the amount of oil that was in the food. Idk maybe that’s just a personal thing though
I really want to love this place. We were so excited to finally try it but unfortunately it just wasn’t good. Maybe the staff is overwhelmed. Maybe we went at a bad time. I just don’t know. I absolutely LOVE modern bread and bagel and will continue enjoying their wonderful foods but I cannot see myself dining here again
Good selection. Food was good but everything was kosher. Cheese was fake on my burger so I was worried about what was in it. Pretty good service until the end when I couldn't get my check. Steak was chewy. Burgers are good. Fries good. Chicken was good. Very expensive for what you get.
This was disappointing. The food was ok, the service was pretty bad, and the price was astronomical.
I got a fried chicken sandwich (meh), fries (reasonably good) and an iced tea (the waiter forgot to bring it).
The entire time I was eating lunch, staff members were loudly prepping boxes of Modern Bread & Bagel goods to ship. It was loud to the point of ridiculousness. I love Modern Bread & Bagel! But no serious restaurant charging $22 for a sandwich should be treating their dining room like a packing warehouse during service.
I can’t speak to the entire menu, but there are better places to safely eat American food in NYC.
Thyme & Tonic has a 100% gluten free menu. I found the menu to be small and expensive - the restaurant is over hyped. I ordered Singapore noodles for my dinner entree - nothing fancy in my opinion. The burger, for example, does not come with fries. That’s an additional $12 order.
Went for brunch and would not go back if you paid me. It was SO LOUD!!! The food is good but not exceptional, and it is horribly overpriced. It shouldn’t cost $80 to get 2 entrees and 2 lemonades from a restaurant like this. The server prioritized a bigger party over us even though we were seated ten minutes prior to them. I noticed it happening to another couple with a different server. Highly recommend skipping this and getting something from the place next door (Modern Bread & Bagel) instead. Some of the stuff you see on the online menu isn’t even on the menu you get handed upon entering.
I am not typically a person who leaves bad reviews, but in this scenario, it is warranted and I don’t want anyone to experience what we just did. My husband (celiac) and I were excited to try Thyme & Tonic. To start, the ambiance is just bad - felt dinghy and frankly cheap. Bad music. Our wooden table had marker stains on it. My husbands water cup had a lipstick stain around the rim. Our drinks took about 25 minutes to arrive. Generally the food was not good - the grilled gem salad was soggy and wilted. The veggie dumplings were the best thing we ordered (but certainly not life changing). The onion rings were slimy and did not taste of salt and vinegar. The worst part of the meal (and honestly the reason I ultimately decided to write this review) is that our burger was completely raw. We ordered it medium rare, and it was completely rare (to the point where you could see the squiggly chopped pink meat). Our waiter even came over and asked if we wanted it to be cooked more since he saw that it was raw. We were so over the restaurant that we just asked for the check because we wanted to go home. We spent $120 (before tip) for 2 apps, 2 Palomas, a burger, and onion rings. The worst meal we’ve ever had. Sad that we accept these standards because there are so few gluten free options out there. We were excited and ventured in from Brooklyn for this experience — but were beyond disappointed (and hoping to not get food poisoning). Trying to prevent the same disappointment for others!
A fully gluten free restaurant with great food options! From popcorn chicken, to mini hot dogs and onion rings, this spot has all of my most missed foods from before my celiac diagnosis. Cannot reccomend enough! I didn’t get a drink but their drink menu looked amazing as well!
Entire restaurant was gluten and dairy free! Which was cool but our chicken and waffles came out cold, they drank a $12 juice instead of bringing it to our table where we had to ask again for them to remake the juice, and the eggs benedict were just okay. The latkes were amazing though I will give them that. Overall the taste was mediocre but very safe for celiacs.
Fantastic spot and such a good menu. Sadly only had time to get the pretzel sliders but they were SO good. Really good drinks too. If I lived in NY I would come here all the time.
Also nice because you can go here for happy hour and then Modern at Night next door for dinner (which is what I did).
Loved that this place was dedicated gluten free and as two vegetarians, so many options. However the service was dreadfully slow and the server never came for my daughter’s drink order so she was ok w the tap water. The latkes were the best of the three items we had.
Unplanned brunch at Thyme & Tonic last Sunday was a highlight of my summer. Best gf brunch at a restaurant in a loooooooong time. Highly recommend it. I came for dinner a year or so ago and it was overall good - finding the apps better than entrees we ordered, but brunch was so delicious and loved by all. Looking forward to coming back for brunch.
The price is crazy for what you get. The fries portion was tiny for my takeaway order. I got the chicken burger with Nashville hot sauce and it was sooo sweet that it made me sick. Wouldn’t return
Thyme & Tonic has evolved quite a bit, and I have a feeling my review of it will too.
In my opinion, it started off as a plant based and gluten free gastropub. Their happy hour and dinner offered burgers, fries, and lots of fun fried foods we don’t get to have often. Their brunch offered an array of fun Jewish-inspired dishes, including the latke tots which were my favorite item.
My main critique of this place has always been the service. Sometimes it’s great, other times I’ve waited an hour for my food with no real explanation. As a result, I always choose to sit at the bar where I know the service will always be great.
The menu has changed SIGNIFICANTLY lately. They offer kosher proteins and vegan options now (be sure to ALWAYS confirm if you want the plant-based option), and as far as I know in addition to the aforementioned options now also offer bowls, sandwiches, snack foods, churros, and sushi. It’s admittedly a little overwhelming, but I believe they are trying to decide what exactly they want this spot to be.
