Best meal I had during my weekend in upstate! I had the oxtail and it was next level delicious. So so good ! I can’t wait to come back here. Also the restaurant has a very nice and warm atmosphere. Everyone is laid back, friendly, and our waitress Missy was great. Next time we’ll save room for dessert 😋
Oh. My. God. The food here is so delicious that my boyfriend continued to eat long past he was full and felt sick the rest of the night! He wanted to continue experiencing the flavors. WOW. EVERYTHING was amazing. Most of their menu is now gluten free. The only items that aren’t are Mac n cheese and a burger bun. Their injera is 100% gluten free, which is rare for an Ethiopian restaurant. Usually they cut their teff with wheat, but Umana does not! Their fryer is dedicated gf because there’s nothing else being fried in there. We had cassava balls (lightly fried to just a tiny fragile crispy outer skin that covered a delicious mashed cassava inside, which we dipped in mango chutney. Is your mouth watering yet? Then we had chicken and tofu injeras. I didn’t eat half of mine (it was enough food for 3 people), and it kept well enough to eat two days later, injera and all. Then we tried a cassava based dessert and it was heavenly. The waiter didn’t know a lot about gluten allergies, but asked the kitchen each time I had a question he didn’t know. He also graciously brought out the ice cream container so I could determine if I could eat it. I opted out of the ice cream because it was Trader Joe’s oat based and there was no mention of it being gluten free either online or on the label, but they subbed a sorbet that was delicious. Did I mention I started with a demi tasse of straight ginger juice? If I could live in this restaurant, I would.
Super cute spot - I can’t believe how long it has taken me to discover it!
We went for brunch. There is a selection of cocktails and about 1/2 the menu (or more) is gluten free. They seemed very accommodating and well versed in Celiac.
I had the Brazilian Breakfast and would perhaps make it a standard order. Very flavorful! 10/10, would recommend.
Update: the chorizo, black bean, and veggie omelet was the best omelet I’ve ever had!
An interesting little spot! Many gf options labeled on the menu. My group ordered 7 dishes, 5 were delicious, 2 could use a little help. And the “spice cornbread” is not like other cornbreads I’ve had. Great service and none of my cc sensitive people got sick, which is always wonderful when we’re traveling from out of town. My 3 kids even ate their meals which we’re always nervous about.
Unbelievable experience at this restaurant. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Everything on their dinner menu is GF except a macaroni and cheese side. Our server told us they had celiac which was super helpful. I have celiac and am extremely sensitive to any cross contamination so eating out is always fraught for me but I felt so relaxed at this restaurant. Not to mention the wings were to die for and the fried fish tacos and plantains were really good too. Wine was also delicious! I will for sure be back!
I had the chicken tacos (corn tortilla, roast beets, chicken, chèvre and pineapple) and the plantains and it was hands down the best food I have ever had. My boyfriend had the injera plate - NOT GF - (lentils, beef, eggplant, sunny side up egg, and a few other things) and is still raving about it days later. Make sure you allow a few hours to dine, they have a small kitchen but it's definitely worth the wait.
