It seemed safe ordering, everything clearly labeled GF, DF. So I ordered the braised beef and mushrooms, selecting no bread since I don't trust that it would be toasted safely. My meal arrived with bread sitting on top of the potatoes. When I explained too the servers why that was wrong and that I had ordered no bread bc I can't have it, they seemed confused.
It’s the kind of cafeteria style where you order at the counter and they bring it to your table. I love a restaurant that marks all of their dishes for GF, DF, vegetarian and this one does. However, I am not sure that the staff is super well trained. I ordered the chimichurri steak, broccoli and side salad (all marked GF) and told her that it was for a severe gluten allergy. She offered me GF bread but didn’t know if the GF bread was toasted in a separate toaster from the regular bread so I opted out of the GF bread. I would have liked to come back for a sandwich but with the unknown of the toasting of the bread, I am going to stick with the plates, salads and bowls. The food was delicious and I didn’t get sick.
I went today!! I notified the woman at the register and she gave me confidence that they could handle my order. Thankfully there is someone who checks orders before they go out. I ordered the Moroccan chicken with cauliflower rice (when the woman at the register offered it I thought it was plain). The “checker”’woman called me over to tell me that the rice contained gluten. She offered to remake it with compliant veggies. I did tell her I was a little nervous as the kitchen had celiac on the ticket yet still served me non compliant rice. I decided to go with it and haven’t gotten sick yet. 🤞🏼 I don’t because it would be so nice to have another option for take out!! The chicken and veggies (carrots and beets) were delish!
The menu is clearly marked for GF items. I ordered seared ahi tuna steak plate with sesame broccoli and balsamic roasted brussel sprouts. The steak was very thick, but it was also dry. I didn’t enjoy it. The brocolli was over cooked and a little too mushy for me. I like a crunch with my bite of broccoli. But the sesame sauce was tasty. The brussel sprouts was the bomb! Best part of the meal. I Would order these again.
Was excited to try this place because it is so clearly marked on their menu what items are gluten free and also dairy free ! Had the braised Moroccan Chicken with rice and gf bread . They seemed so well informed ! I trusted them. BUT …half way through the meal I began to get my usual symptoms of gluten exposure . When you know , you know . Enter day 2 and I’m in bed all day and stomach is destroyed . Had to be cross contamination is my best guess . I really don’t understand offering gluten free in such a proudly public way and yet based on other bad reviews for this chain there is NO awareness of cross contamination . It can be as simple as changing your gloves or using a clean utensil to plate my food but a dedicated gluten free area and grill / toaster / fryer etc means you are truly gluten free. I’ve eaten at restaurants that make the minimal efforts like knowledge of ingredients and glove changes and not gotten sick . So something at Urban Plates is definitely wrong .
Honestly what I ordered reminded me of a frozen lean cuisine I ate back in the 90’s and also my meal only had 3 little chunks of chicken in it . So here I am telling all of you my warnings . It takes weeks to recover as many of you well know . Based on their large menu I might have tried something different in the future since I didn’t really like my choice of entree . Their salads looked good . However , I doubt I will ever go back based on the fact that they made me sick and miserable . Basically I paid them to wreck me and my health . This gf community at least gives us a voice to warn others . Hopefully you will have a better experience if you decide to try this place .
