I ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and a side of the southern street corn. I was really excited to go because of all the good reviews. I informed the staff that I'm celiac and could have no gluten. I asked about the 'Slow Roasted Beer Can Chicken' as it is made with farro which is wheat and IPA beer (gluten) but is labeled as gluten free they said that it was probably mislabeled but everything else was correct which was not confidence inspiring. I went with my gluten detection dog; he alerted that there was gluten in the southern street corn, which made me nervous for the rest of the meal, but he cleared the main dish. It was an anxiety inducing meal and I will not be going back.
Earlier this weekend, friends and I dined at Yardbird before attending a Caps game at Capital One Arena. Our eight-person party was seated prior to the reservation time as we arrived--no need for a majority of the group to be present. We were lucky enough to be placed in the private room at the back of the restaurant, which was such a treat (given the volume of the main dining space). We started the night with drink orders taken by our server, Christine. Unfortunately, the bar was very busy; it took quite a while for each round to be delivered. This meant that we left the restaurant much later than planned--dinner took more than two hours, and we needed two drinks to be removed from the bill as they didn't arrive more than 30 minutes after being requested. Other than the hiccups associated with timing, the meal was lovely. Christine asked about food sensitivities and intolerances when we were first seated; she confirmed each person's allergies as she took individual orders. She also was familiar with celiac disease and cross contact. I ordered the protein bowl; it was large, colorful, and varied in flavor. If I weren't going to Capital One, I would have brought part of my meal home. To accompany my dinner, I ordered two Madras cocktails; both were excellent--well-proportioned, strong, and perfect accompaniments to my dinner. Our group needed to pay the bill quickly to head to the Caps game; we had a single person cover the total, using Venmo to split individual orders later. An 18-percent automatic gratuity was added to our bill prior to applying D.C. tax. I plan to return to Yardbird soon to enjoy their delicious gluten-free fried chicken. Hopefully when the bar is less backed up!
Yardbird menu is full of southern dishes, fried chicken, chicken and waffles, deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, cornbread with bacon and jalapeños. The have a great cocktail and mocktail menu. The service is excellent.
I was attending a conference in D.C. and stayed at the Marriott Marquis. This was a short walk from the hotel and I had read great reviews so I checked it out. Outstanding experience here! I had the fried chicken and could not believe how good it was!! I spoke to two staff members to ensure it was safe. Word of caution, however- they list their beer can chicken as GF on the menu and it is NOT GF. That’s what I wanted to eat but I asked twice because it uses beer and when checking with the restaurant manager she confirmed it was a mistake. Go with the fried chicken! It was amazing. Zero consequences, and I’m an extremely sensitive celiac!
Fried chicken and waffles was delicious. Separate GF fryer. I didn’t look beyond the chicken at other GF options so not sure what else they had.
Best gluten free fried chicken I (celiac) have EVER had!! My boyfriend even said that the gluten free fried chicken was the best fried chicken he had ever had (he’s not gluten free)! Must-go spot!
Enjoyed the best gluten free fried chicken I’ve had since being diagnosed with celiac in 2013. But I agree with the other posts about the price….for us it’ll definitely be one of those “splurge” places rather than a frequent “go to” spot. Chicken was excellent, as were the mashed potatoes. Waffles were a bit soggy, but not a deal-breaker. I wanted to try the greens but didn’t feel compelled to add an extra $15 side item to a bill that was already well over $100 for two people. As for the watermelon cubes, it should be a misdemeanor to put basil on any fruit.
I had the GF chicken and waffles for brunch, I haven’t had fried chicken in so long and this was a best meal i’ve had in a while. I had no reaction and the staff was pretty knowledgeable
incredible! I informed the waiter I had celiac and they have a ton of knowledge, plus they are really good about cross contamination! Fryers are gluten free and there's a ton of different options! I got the chicken and waffles and key lime pie. Definitely expensive but the food was amazing!
Excellent GF fried chicken. The coating is nicely spiced but not spicy. The waffle is light and crispy. The watermelon tastes like a mojito. Most items on the menu are meant to share. The chicken is a platter with 4 waffles, 1 chicken breast, 1 thigh, 1 leg & 1 wing + watermelon. Most tables we’re eating family style. The key lime pie is large. 2-4 portions depending on if you’re splitting as a couple or want a taste for a group. Make a reservation. We went on a Friday night and they turned away everyone without one.
Great place, great service. But I got sick, after eating here. Definitely cross contamination. Even though there is a dedicated fryer, I think it likely happened in prep or service.
Speechless! As if the atmosphere and friendly staff weren’t enough to get me back, the FOOD SEALED THE DEAL! The Chicken and Waffles may have been the best thing to ever touch my lips. After asking management what is in the greens that makes if not GF, she asked the chef and they went through every ingredient and found that the pork rind that they put on top is fried in the regular fryer and not the GF fryer. So they are looking at adding the * to the menu that says it is available GF.
Everyone was so knowledgeable about gluten free and they have GLUTEN FREE PIES!
I’ll be back again and again and again.
Had the best experience! Walked in for lunch and had salad and GF chicken and waffles! It was amazing! The alcoholic drinks were also great. Definitely will return.
We got takeout (GF chicken and waffles, mashed potatoes and street corn) as the restaurant was very busy. Placed our order with the manager who assured us that it would be completely safe and the ticket had each individual thing flagged as gluten allergy. My son with Celiac got VERY sick within a couple of hours and was definitely glutened. Eat at your own risk! 😞
Very pricey but the GF fried chicken and waffles were so delicious!! Both made on GF specific equipment and the staff were deliberate at saying “GF” when repeating back the order and also when delivering food to the table, which I always appreciate. There are lots of other GF options marked on the menu. Highly recommend.
I had the delicious fried chicken and gf waffles. The chef came out to talk to me. He was clearly knowledgeable. They weren’t extremely busy at 6pm so maybe this wouldn’t happen if they were busy. My non-celiac son had the same thing and his waffles were a different size - they use a different waffle press for the gf batter. The lard-fried chicken was they best I’ve had, so moist and the batter stuck to the meat. Though it has been 21 years since I’ve had it in a restaurant! No problems or illness. French fries are in a shared fryer, so I didn’t have those, but the chef was willing to make some for me separately if I wanted to wait. But I knew the main dish would be enough food. Service was excellent, too.
The fried chicken and glazed Brussels sprouts were delicious. Cocktails were great too. They make a really great old fashioned if that is your thing. The chicken is breaded in rice flower and fryer is dedicated. The facility is not 100% gluten free though, although staff are really knowledgeable of Celiac and necessary precautions. It’s a bit on the pricier side, but the atmosphere is up scale and more conducive to good conversation with a friend or a nice date night out.zw
