Went to Zanzibar for a work dinner.
I emailed them before hand with my typical questions to determine if it was safe to eat here…with no response.
Upon arriving, I asked the waitress about gluten free options & I was told “the wings and the shrimp are GF!”, enthusiastically.
I then explained to her I was Celiac and need to be very strict so I asked questions about prep. The waitress (with manager next to her) told me “yep, both Gluten Free & safe with how they’re made!”
I then proceeded to look at the menu. The shrimp has teriyaki glaze. The teriyaki glaze contained gluten.
Needless to say, I didn’t trust the wing recommendation after this and decided to stick to drinks here.
I then confirmed there is no GF prep space after this for ANY item — additionally, the waitress was not aware that the glaze had soy sauce and that soy sauce had gluten… that says enough about the server AND chef/kitchen staff training in my opinion.
Hopefully they remember the info I told them for the next Celiac. Hopefully they take Celiac dietary restrictions (Aka gluten free) more seriously one day too.
Hope this helps someone!
