Outstanding GF pizza - I approach any pizza place expecting to be disappointed, but after finding this place I have gone well out of the way twice when passing through to eat there. Two GF crust options - the cauliflower crust is so good (not a typical frozen crust) - I called the waitress back over to say this is so good there’s no way it’s GF - which she said people say. Will be going back.
We called the day ahead to inquire about the menu. There are two gluten free pizza crusts - basil which has egg in it and the cauliflower which has no egg. We were originally told the fries were not coated and were gluten free, but when we called the next day to place our order, we were told the fries are in fact dipped in beer batter or something, anyway, Fries are NOT gluten free. The use separate pizza pans only for the gf pizza crusts. They also have gluten free rolls for any of their sandwiches. The vegan cheese is great and melts perfect on the pizzas. Would definitely eat here again. We are gluten sensitive and had no reactions eating here.
Called to ask all the right questions (can items on the gf menu be prepared safely for a celiac). Was told there is a separate prep space and separate oven. Arrived and was told by a different server who also works in the kitchen that there is not a separate prep space and no separate oven. She said the kitchen staff would be careful but that cross contact could happen. We left without ordering. Really frustrating to be told a completely different story on the phone.
The service was amazing but I ordered a gluten free pizza and a few hours later I’m getting sick. I could tell that the pizza has been contaminated with Gluten in the kitchen. Hoping kitchen’s understand for some people this isn’t a choice and they need to work better to accommodate people with these allergies or don’t do it at all.
Wicked GF’s greater Portland dining guide said Portland Pie Co had a dedicated prep & oven space for GF allergy orders, but their Scarborough location does not. I was apprehensive, but the promise of my first calzone since diagnosis won out. They do use a dedicated foil for GF orders which is kept in a sealed bag and they added aluminum foil “walls” up around the edges of my calzone for further protection. It does go in the same oven with allll the gluten items. For me, it was worth the risk and absolutely delicious. I still felt well afterwards, so no cross contamination. It was a slow weekday and I think the lower demand increased my chances of a safe meal. If it had been packed, I’m not sure they would have had or taken the time to be so careful with my order. Our server was also very considerate and great at following up.
Have eaten here three times. GREAT pizza (well - as good as you can get for GF crust)! Have not been sick. Staff follows protocols for GF (separate pans/cutters, etc). Highly recommended if you have GF requirements. 10/10 - will be back!!
The waitress was completely clueless about gf options. I asked if the chocolate layered cake was gf and her response was “does it say gf on the menu? Then it is”. I waited for 45 minutes just for the waitress to say she forgot what I ordered. The desserts are premade and all she had to do was put it in a bag. Both desserts ordered (key lime pie and the gf chocolate layer cake) were terrible and tasted like freezer burn. I also watched the waitress give a to go order to the wrong customers even though she literally just took the order 10 minutes ago from a different person. It was a pre paid order and the person picking up didn’t pay. She said “oh it’s already paid for”, handed it to the wrong customer and let them go.
I was expecting a typical gf crust - kinda crackery and sad, but this was delicious. Yes, it’s very flat, but the flavor of the crust is the best I’ve had, and the toppings were easy to customize to make sure that the whole pie stayed GF. I highly recommend this if you’ve been missing the gourmet pizza experience. (We we’re at the Biddeford location. In the big old mill building)
We loved our lunch at Portland Pie Co! My 3 year old and I both have Celiac and enjoyed a delicious calzone and pizza-best we’ve ever had! Staff was knowledgeable and took their time with us even though they were slammed. Highly recommend.
Very disappointing experience. I ordered a GF calzone and when it came out I confirmed with the waiter that it was GF. It looked too good to be true and much different than the pictures posted in other reviews. After asking again he showed it to the kitchen and they said they were pretty sure it was GF. I ordered a new one to be sure and it came out looking extremely different. It was difficult to enjoy my meal because I lost any confidence that this would be 100% gluten free.
I ate here last night & the only good thing about it was the pizza. The menu isn’t clearly marked for GF & the service was horrible. I asked the waitress a question I already knew the answer too and when she came back her answer was just stick to the pizza. They have bread listed with their sandwiches but couldn’t answer what sandwiches could/are GF.
Not considered celiac safe
I have eaten here twice. Both times the server confirmed I was getting a GF crust and that they noted the gluten allergy to the kitchen. Both times I did NOT get sick. However, I'm writing this review because this is hands down THE BEST pizza crust I have eaten since my diagnosis. Well done Portland Pie Company - only wished I lived in Maine! But will be dining with you every time I visit the state going forward. THANK YOU!
I used to love ordering here but the last three times I have tried it, I have gotten so sick! Not worth it any more.
Amazing! We came in on a chill night where it wasn’t too busy and got great service. But their gluten free crusts were clearly labeled and they have MORE than one option. I tried the cauliflower crust but they also have a basil crust. You couldn’t even tell it was made from cauliflower (though I don’t mind the taste) it was incredible and the perfect crispiness. I am very celiac and I didn’t get sick at all, the mozzarella didn’t even upset my stomach and the basil was fresh as well as the tasty sauce. 10/10 will come again!
Staff was really understanding and they answered some of my questions when about gluten free. The pizza was absolutely amazing and it was nice to have almost everything on the menu made gluten free.
Edit to add: I don’t know if they’ve switched kitchen staff or management, but we have stopped coming here! My CD son has gotten sick the last 3-4 times:(
Had a GF/vegan Monhegan pizza (think steak bomb with vegan cheese). It was delicious! We have gone 7 or 8 times now and my boy is sensitive Celiac. He has been fine each time! So thankful for a good pizza place!
Ordered several pies and tried both GF crust option and the cauliflower crust. Prefer cauliflower since it’s doughier. Crust, if overdone, can be chewy or really hard. Don’t recommend getting it “well done.” Flavors on pizzas were yummy and didn’t get sick! And lobster pizza in Maine?? Yes please!
Can I just say, out loud, GLUTEN FREE CALZONE? Ok crust, awesome middles. Gf crust comes on its own pan and staff change gloves; cooked in a communal oven but I have not had a moment's issue, ever. Staff are fabulous and do not take offense to detailed questions. Extensive bar; one gf beer offered. Also has gf deserts, but you'll never have room!
great service, waitress was very polite and understanding when i said i have a gluten allergy. i had the veggie burger on a gluten free bun subbed the ranch guacamole for ketchup and mustard. had a side ceasar salad with no croutons and she even reclarified when bringing the food over that there should be no issues! i was still nervous in case of cross contamination but i had no reaction!
Wow what a cluster. Called ahead like usual and the person who answered was maybe a little high but talked about separate prep spaces and separate pans for pizza. I get there and the waiter is like wow no way can you eat pizza or calzones here with celiac. I said the person I spoke to via phone said there was a separate prep space and she said people who answer the phone can’t be trusted. Alright then so I ordered a boring salad I didn’t actually want. I flagged down a manager just after ordering. Said I got conflicting info about the safety for celiac. She said “ok” and went to walk away. I continued talking and said the waiter said it wasn’t safe for me to eat pizza there. She said she disagreed citing a separate pizza slicer for GF pizzas but didn’t say much else. I asked why the waiter would say one thing and the person working the phones would say another. She said “I’ll talk to staff about it” and never returned to our table. Beyond disappointed! My salad was fine. Consistent messaging is so key If you have celiac. The manager obviously didn’t give one single crap about whether or not I enjoyed my meal.
Delivered the wrong pizza 2 hours late. Literally can’t even consume what was delivered due to an allergy. Delivery driver was rude. 0/10 do not recommend the Biddeford location. The other ones have been fine.
Best gluten-free pizza in Portland in my opinion. The dough is soft and chewy. They also have cauliflower crust and gf bread for sandwiches, I haven’t tried either though.
Food was good with GF rolls. They do warn on menu about possible cross. We took the chance and were fine.
All the GF pizzas and salads are excellent. I've been eating here for a few years and never gotten sick. Non GF family members love it too!
I’ve eaten here many times and never gotten sick. Staff is very knowledgeable. The dough is also delicious!
Best gf pizza in New England! I'm from Massachusetts, lived in Connecticut and like to travel. This is by far the best place. even when veggies make the dough soggy it's still delicious. It's just inescapable with veggies.
Don’t bother. I thought I’d try their GF pizza for takeout and about 20 minutes after I called the manager called to tell me they don’t serve people like me. She explained they didn’t want to be sued. Ouch. I have had luck at their Scarborough location. Friendlier and it’s clear the management understands and train GF practices.
The most amazing GF cauliflower pizza crust I’ve had in 2.5 years. Old Orchard Roasted Veggie. Amazing! Knowledgeable staff. DELICIOUS!! âââââ
Absolutely LOVE this place! The gluten-free basil dough is amazing! I had a calzone for the first time in 15 years! I added pepperoni to mine. It was packed with flavor and was so big I couldn’t even eat it all. The food comes quick and the service was stellar. Our server gave us honest opinions of the food and helped us ‘travelers’ choose the best menu options.
Have eaten here and gotten take out as a celiac for years and never had any issues until the last 6 months or so. I have tried at least 6 times, thinking it was a fluke contamination issue. Every time I have gotten sick from gluten. Will not continue to buy from here anymore. If you are celiac this is not a safe gf establishment.
Got the GF calzone, I’m celiac and had no issues. Staff was very knowledgeable. Very chill atmosphere and great cocktails.
