Gluten-Free at Salt & Straw

Salt & Straw takes allergens pretty seriously, this was yet another successful experience at one of their locations. Long line but it moved quickly.

Upon ordering simply mentioned celiac/gluten 'allergy' - I knew what I wanted was GF before I arrived, half honey lavender half strawberry honey balsamic with black pepper. My sever wanted to double check anyway on his allergen list which I appreciated. He asked if he could make the rest of my parties ice cream then would do mine in the back from unopened containers/clean scoop. It took quite some time so I have faith their implemented allergen procedures were followed. Ice cream was excellent, especially the strawberry my favorite! Many GF options available!

So many ice cream places will not accommodate me on getting ice cream from clean containers in the back so I really appreciate Salt & Straw making this easy at any location. Training goes a long way and it shows!

Finally tried this place after much hype from my students over the years. I must say I wasn’t overly impressed. It was good though not great. I appreciated the vegan options (better than most) and their precautions to prepare my ice cream separately since I must be gluten free. They were also knowledgeable about which flavors were GF without having to check or look it up. Good place although not the best in LA area.

I got a peanut butter brittle flavor— so good!

This place was so lovely!!! They got it immediately, let me try three (3!) flavors (they offered even after I was like “no that’s so much trouble”) from new pints, and then scooped mine in the back from the new pint. They were so understanding. After a tough week on a work trip and feeling left out a lot, this was such a lovely and affirming experience. And there vegan flavors (coconut base) are so so good; perfect for us celiac babes who have become lactose intolerant as well. Only a few flavors had gluten, so there are plenty of options. I will be returning here every time I’m in Portland.

I visited the location in Downtown Disney. Our server was incredible! She washed her hands, put on new gloves, got a clean scooper and opened new pints of two flavors. We had the vanilla and the lemon. Both were amazing! Fantastic customer service.

Horrendous!!! I ordered the mint chocolate, which supposedly gluten free and about 45 mins later, I am having major constipation with a massive amount of cold sweats. I was definitely suffering and at the same time my hands and feet were tingling and continued all night!!!!

Salt n Straw is not gluten friendly at all!!!! I warn you all!!!!

reiterating what another reviewer already said - they are very cautious when you inform them of any allergy. they check their cheat sheet for each flavor you want to sample, and then once you’ve picked your flavor they will either use a fresh “allergy scoop” or just go all the way to the back to scoop it from an unused tub. really appreciate the care and attention to detail. super kind and helpful staff too! not to mention the ice cream is fabulous. do yourself a favor and get some ice cream here!!! there is no clear indication on the menu of what’s GF (it’s sort of the obvious cookie dough/brownie/etc type flavors that aren’t) but have no fear, they will make sure a flavor is safe before handing you a sample.

At both this location and the one on Abbot-Kinney in Venice they are extremely diligent. They use fresh scoops and a new container from the back, even for a simple taste. Totally worth the wait, cost, calories & hype!!

So many gluten-free options! The servers had lists posted by each freezer so they could advise me as to which flavors were safe. My only tiny complaint was that they used the same spoons for all the flavors. But, they did sit in water between flavors. I'm sure they would have used a new spoon had I asked. No ill effects for me, except for some discomfort as a result of eating 2-1/2 big scoops of ice cream! 😉

The best vegan ice cream I’ve ever had. The mint chip was so creamy and decadent that it was impossible to tell the difference between the non vegan ice cream.

You have the option to get your scoops in a bowl and watch them prepare all of the orders so I knew there wasn’t any cross contamination with the waffle cones or ice cream containing gluten.

What a cute and fun place! The one worker not only asked another about the GFDF ice cream options (that were clearly listed) but he also went over and got the ingredients list to make SURE my daughter could have it! This is in the Downtown Disney location. The website shows all their flavors and which have gluten. The first question the server asked was any allergies. They got my ice cream using a cleaned scoop from cartons still in the freezer to eliminate the risk of cross contamination. Tasted great.

They ask everyone about dietary needs and if you say gluten they will ask if cross contamination is a concern. If you say yes, then they will go to the back and scoop out of an contaminated carton. The guy who scooped my ice cream asked all of these questions unprompted and got me some contaminated ice cream with a smile on his face. He even thanked me for my patience. Wow! So nice to not feel like a burden!!

This was a great experience all around. Friendly staff, interesting flavors, great ice cream. I got the double vanilla (risk free choice) and some sort of vegan mint chocolate chip. I am not vegan, and it was good.

The staff apologized for having to scoop our ice cream from the back. There are waffle cones everywhere, so that was no problem with us. We stepped aside, and they brought our ice cream out to us safe from cross contamination. Great job.

The staff was well informed and accommodating. I chose my ice cream flavor, they confirmed it was GF, and since I told them I have celiac they opened a new pint and brought out a new scoop to prevent cross contamination. They also informed me that machines are washed between flavors during production.

Update: finally decided to test with my Nima sensor and two of the three flavors (I bought pints) tested positive for gluten.

An ice cream shop for all! Being both vegan & gluten free, I was so happy to enjoy The Cloudforest Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream. Please open shops in NY.

Most delicious ice cream I have had in a really long time. I had the salted caramel ribbon and my husband had the coffee and chocolate flavour. They offered to give me samples from containers in the back fridge but I already had my heart set on a flavour! They pulled out a new scoop and opened a new container for me, which was amazing. The scoops were in a drawer right below the waffle cone makers so that made me a little nervous. I would definitely agree with the comment below and buy a tub from the freezer if you want to be 100% safe.

When we first went to the counter they asked if we had any allergies. We told them we have one with Celiac. She told us what flavors were safe and then asked if we wanted her to scoop from an unopened carton in the back. Wow, impressive!

We said our daughter has celiac, so they got a new spoon and got her ice cream from a brand new pint of ice cream in the freezer to be sure it was not cross contaminated. Their menu clearly details contents, so you know which to avoid. The ice cream was A M A Z I N G!! If your in the area, don’t pass up a stop here for ice cream.

When informed that my child had celiac disease they got a new scoop and a new pint of ice cream to serve hers up from. They have many options for gluten free. Their flavors are sometimes quirky and odd but some of them are more normal and all that I have tried are rich and delicious. We have been several times with our child with celiac disease that is very sensitive to cross contamination and she has never felt ill after eating here.
