I’ve eaten here 3 times. I’m gluten sensitive not celiac. They will prepare any fresh seafood gluten free and have GF sides, but fries are cooked in shared fryer. Service is good without being intrusive, indoor and outdoor seating in a fabulous waterside location. I’ll return for sure.
Wanted to be stoked with my supposed gf tortilla chips and artichoke dip along with my chicken caesar, minus croutons, but had a bad reaction. Supposedly fryer is 100% gf, but with all the bread around, it seems there’s big cross contamination going on for celiacs. So disappointed. Also, quite expensive for lunch. Seemed like a dinner menu.
Love this place. Excellent food, great location, and very knowledgeable about cross-contamination. There are lots of options (even beyond what is listed on the separate gf menu, including the crab and artichoke dip), and the food is exceptional. The risotto and scalloped potatoes are now gluten free as well, despite an earlier review indicating otherwise. My brother is a very sensitive celiac and he has never been contaminated here.
This place is wonderful and most waiters/ waitresses are knowledgeable about the GF options They also have a GF bread in lieu of Sourdough And their cheese potato’s are GF yummy !!! Also they’ve prepared my fish GF on many occasions. With no CC !! Never once have been sick from here . BonApetit’
The food was wonderful and the staff was very knowledgeable and took extra care to ensure my dish was gluten free and that my intolerance was noted. A lot of variety of gluten free options when it comes to the main dishes. Many of the fish can be prepared without flour or grilled plain. Unsure if they use separate cooking utensils as I am not sensitive to that kind of cross contamination.
We stopped in here for lunch. The waiter said they could make many of the items gluten free and cook separate for safety. I ordered a gluten free burger, he said I couldn’t have the fries. Which was fine. They brought out my burger with fries. I was a little worried to eat here after this, but they did redo my food. I didn’t get sick, so that’s good.
I ordered the Maine lobster roll on a bed of lettuce, it was delicious! Reminded me of home on Cape Cod. Also has sautéed spinach, both excellent.
Traveling and had the nice opportunity to check out a seafood place near the water. Asked for a GF menu but they didn’t have one, the manager happened to be nearby and said any fish grilled or a salad would be fine but to watch out for sauces and any breading. Confirmed with our server what could be made safely, and ordered with him the fish and shrimp tacos on corn tortillas which came with mixed rice; did get sick shortly after leaving. This place isn’t a safe one & didn’t feel they took any precautions with my order. Wouldn’t recommend for GF safety.
I felt very uncomfortable here trying to order and asking questions about gluten free options. The waitress wasn’t willing to work with me or tell me choices I had. They couldn’t do alterations or change sides. I don’t know if it was just this one waitstaff person but the experience makes me and my family to never want to go back.
I was told the tortillas were gluten free. I had other dishes that were obviously gluten free. (Ceviche and a salad). I was sick all night. Love the atmosphere and the overall experience was good. Just need to educate the staff as to the common fryer aspect of gluten free. I think so many are using the GF diet as a fad diet and it makes it difficult.
No gluten free menu but a lot of the fish is ok and so are the vegetable sides. But the server didn’t seem that knowledgeable nor did they offer to get more information. The food was average. You will probably be safe here but have limited options and expect confusion from the staff.
Not very impressed with this place. First place I've been to where the risotto is not gf, and scalloped potatoes were not either (in Europe they're usually gf). Server didn't seem very knowledgeable, but was friendly and asked the kitchen. When we got the food, both of our dishes were different than advertised. Fish was the same, but I got it covered in spices (seemed like it was with flour, so had to double check with the kitchen) and with sour cream instead of a beurre blanc.
This restaurant serves mostly fish. It looks delicious. I stopped in to see if they could do GF and they said most of their fish dishes are GF. Their sides are GF since they use cornstarch and not flour. However, their fries are fried in a shared fryer. So the fries are likely cross contaminated.
Ultimately, we ended up going somewhere else for dinner later that night. However, this restaurant looked really good. I will include a picture of the menu and the manager’s card, if you want to call them beforehand. They said they are currently working on a GF menu now. (April 2022)
Gave three stars since the person at the front was knowledgeable about what was gluten-free on the menu and the restaurant looked nice and clean and the fish looked fresh. Didn’t give 5 stars since we didn’t eat here so I don’t know for sure if the food is good or GF.
No gluten free items marked on the menu. I ordered what should be a naturally gluten free fish dish with veggies on the side, specifying a “gluten allergy” to the waitress. The waitress also got a bit short with all my questions which should have been a red flag to get out of there.
I ended up getting the worst gluten reaction I’ve had in a while.
DO NOT RECOMMEND. The waiter asked me if bread had gluten in it. When I asked to speak to the manager, I was told that the previous manager knew about gluten, not him. So he never came to our table. I am aware that the service industry took a hit during covid and we need to be patient but this place is unsafe.
Based on the waiter’s responses to my questions, he seemed knowledgeable about celiac. He told me the chef said he doesn’t cook with any gluten on the grill, so he can provide gf meals on the grill. My fish was delicious as well as the spinach and cole slaw. We tried to have dinner here at 6:00 on a Sunday night, but there was a 2 hour wait. Tonight we went at 5:00 and got in with no problem.
The app sashimi tuna was on the “wheat free” menu and is NOT safe. It’s marinated in soy sauce. Honestly I didn’t really like my meal- cod with sautéed carrots and spaghetti squash. The food was really oily but kind of tasteless. They forgot my salsa for the fish and then only gave me a small scoop when I asked for it. But as far as safety, what I ate was gluten free so they did a good with that. Won’t be going back though, food was mediocre
Al a carte fresh fish menu. Fish and sides are cooked in olive oil.
Had tuna sashimi. Waiter explained what was gluten free, but did not double check and seemed uncertain. Meal came with soy sauce-esque sauce, but drizzle did not touch tuna. He was certain that fish of the day and shrimp and grits was gluten free. Did not indicate celiac friendly practices.
They were very attentive to my dietary needs. The only issue was the bus boy brought bread to our table 3 times before remembering that we couldn't eat bread (hence the 4 verses 5 stars).
They don't have a separate prep area, but only fish with a little olive oil, salt, & pepper go on their grill. The server & kitchen staff seemed highly knowledgeable about cross-contamination, so it was relatively safe.
I got the cioppino, which was fabulous! They gave me grilled summer squash instead of the toasted bread at no extra charge, which I thought was very nice. My boyfriend got the grilled halibut with coleslaw & potatoes. All of it was delicious.
All in all we had a great experience & I didn't get sick, so I'd definitely go back when I visit Avalon again.
Our waitress understood the seriousness of celiac disease and showed me what part of the menu to order from, essentially just the daily fish and a couple of salads. One of the previous waitresses there had celiac disease so some of the staff got to learn from her what was ok and what wasn't. However, later in the meal she offered me oyster crackers so she either forgot or doesn't know what's in oyster crackers. I got the crab salad and it was delicious and I didn't get sick.
