Chips in gluten free fryer!!! Confirmed with two servers and then the manager, twice, because the other Plaza Azteca locations do not have multiple fryers with clean oil. Also sautéed shrimp in clean pan and made a corn tortilla quesadilla. Confirmed corn tortilla when bringing food out before we could even ask.

Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience at Plaza Azteca. After reading several good reviews, we were excited to try it. After talking with the hostess and our server to confirm that they could accommodate a Celiac allergy, we ordered our food. When someone other than our server brought the food with the other food, we triple checked with him and weren't confident in his response so we checked back with the server before my son started to eat his food. He confirmed it was prepared completely gluten free. Then, around 5 minutes later, after my son had already started eating, he returned to say that the cook suggested he not eat the fries because they weren't sure. Without sharing the details, it was a traumatic experience for my poor kiddo. I am very disappointed in how this was handled. We couldn't really enjoy our meal so it is hard to comment on the taste/quality.

Delicious steak tacos; beans & rice too. No issues. Highly recommend.

Nothing here is gluten free. The staff is clueless about allergies.
Be very careful with any Mexican restaurant, but especially this one. Many of them will marinate their chicken and beef in soy sauce or other gluten containing marinades. This place marinates their meet and contaminates it.
If you have celiac, avoid this place.

I have eaten here 3 times in the past 5 months and haven't gotten sick after getting the fajitas, chicken or steak. I ask for the corn tortillas. I do not eat the chips as they do not have a dedicated fryer but bring my own to enjoy a salsa or guacamole.

Menu is no longer marked. The hostess had no idea what gluten was. Our server said the tacos, fajitas, enchiladas and nachos are made with corn tortillas but she was unsure if there was anything else in them that might have gluten. My corn tortillas tasted old and were extremely tough. Be cautious if you come here

I called ahead asking about gluten free options and the hostess let me know the server could point out what can be made gf on the menu. She mentioned the chips were not made in a shared fryer. When we were seated the server said the enchiladas, tacos, and fajitas could be made with corn tortillas. The server dis mention the salad flour tortilla were fried in the same chip oil so they would not be safe. I asked about the beans and rice that were served with them and he was unsure so the manager came out. The manager asked if it was celiac or an intolerance and I let him know I was celiac. He told me the beans were fine as they make them fresh everyday with vegetable oil and spices, but he was unsure of the rice because of the bullion they use. They could make me a white rice instead with corn. He also let me know he would inform the kitchen. I ended up ordering chicken fajitas, white rice, and beans. Everything was good and I had no reaction.

Their food never disappoints and we were extra grateful for their attention to my husbands gluten free needs. The server helped us find menu items that used corn rather than flour tortillas (enchiladas) and even came back after speaking to the kitchen to let us know one of the sauces was thickened with flour. He subbed a different salsa and brought us a sample to taste! Things are a little pricey but very worth it for that home cooked Mexican taste!

Been here several times - fajitas are always an easy go to, just ask for corn tortillas. Chips are fried in a shared fryer so if you’re avoiding cross contamination don’t eat them - I bring my own to enjoy the guacamole. Apparently they used to have GF right on the menu but changed the menus and it no longer states it. Some servers are more knowledgeable than others so I stick to eating the same things Everytime I go.

Poor experience - didn't even make it past the hostess. We walked in and I asked about gluten free options. She started talking about vegetarian options. I asked if I could speak to someone else. Another person came over and said they don't have separate fryers or dedicated space. Decided it was not worth the risk for my daughter with Celiac.

They do list gluten free corn tortillas under fajitas, but that’s about it. Our waitress didn’t speak enough English to know what I was asking when I asked about another menu item being gluten free. Another waiter tried to answer my question, but I wasn’t very confident in his response either. I’m new to gf and not very confident when things aren’t well marked. I just got chicken fajitas and didn’t eat any of the sides.

Large restaurant, friendly staff. Lots of options. I did not get sick and neither did my gf/df husband. Chips were fine. They have vegan cheese, too. They did serve us flour tortillas but they come wrapped separately and the server realized the error before we had a chance to flag someone down. This is a chain and we also did well at the one in OBX, NC.

I’m usually weary of Mexican food because I haven’t had much luck with it. This place had no GF items on the menu marked. BUT the staff is clearly well trained, the food was delish, and I did not get sick. My first question to the waitress was “do you make your own chips and are they corn?” And she immediately replied with “yes and they are made in their own fryer and they’re gluten free” without me even telling her! She was able to guide me on the menu. After eating many baskets of chips and salsa I got the Tacos De Pollo and they were great and also a ton of food!

Eating at this Plaza Azteca now. It took 3 people to discover if any of the food is gluten free. Waiter didn’t understand English enough, the front manager asked “explain to me what is gluten”… and the kitchen manager explained all food is fried in separate oil-but wasn’t sure what was gluten free except to say all food prepared with corn tortillas must be gluten free. I couldn’t even address the concern of cross contamination…. Here’s hoping for the best while eating an enchilada… I ordered the 3 enchilada meal-one chicken, one cheese, one beef. It’s been about 15 minutes after eating and so far so good… the food tastes good. They used lots of cheese on my plate-covered the enchiladas and the beans with it.

I used to love this place, but the removed all the gf references from the menu. I was told “not to worry, the staff is knowledgeable”, but my “gf” meal came out with flour tortillas :(
I tried to reach out about the change in approach, hoping it was temporary, but I never heard back.
So sad. We used to go here all the time, and now it’s on the ‘no-go’ list for us :(

January 2023 edit: They’ve done away with all gluten free labeling on their menu 🙁
Original Review: This is one of my go-to restaurants in town. Their menu has a GF icon to easily spot safe menu items, and there are quite a few. The food is delicious, served quickly, and fairly priced. Table-side guacamole is delicious and the manager frequently makes rounds and is very friends. Love this restaurant and highly recommend!

I was really disappointed in this place. Our waiter had no clue what gluten was. When I asked about it, he said he would take the cheese and sour cream off the dish. He went to ask the hostess about gluten free and still couldn’t figure it out. I asked to speak with the manager, who was very nice and gave me the option of fajitas or salad, which is much more limited than the online menu. I ordered the fajitas and they came out with flour tortillas. We also felt the prices were not reflective of the quality of food.

Previously they had a menu that had gf items clearly marked. Their chips used to be in a separate fryer. Last night I learned, the chips are no longer in a separate fryer and their newer menu doesn’t have anything marked as GF. I got chicken tacos and didn’t get sick but bummed about the changes.

I was so nervous to eat here. Haven't had Mexican in years due to the risk of cross-contamination. I get very sick with the smallest amount of exposure or cross contamination. It's been two weeks and I'm still not sick.
The staff was very knowledgeable and even though I was nervous I did not get sick. What a tasty treat, and they have a dedicated fryer for their tortilla chips. Yum!

I ordered chicken enchiladas with rice and beans without sauce. It was good. Most dishes can be GF by using corn tortillas instead without some sauces. Waiter was pretty knowledgeable and verified with the chef. I’m celiac and had no problems afterwards. DO NOT eat the chips as they are cooked in a shared fryer!! Mojitos are really good. The menu has recently been updated and does not have any GF indications. My husband was happy to eat at a Mexican restaurant again, so we will return as I feel fairly safe dining here.

My best friend and I both have celiac disease. We love coming here at least 2x a month because the food is great and we have never had any reaction. The chips are gluten free and the enchiladas are made with corn tortillas. I usually get a combo of a corn beef taco with a cheese and beef enchilada. The red enchilada sauce is not gluten free but you can get it with the cheese dip or salsa verde instead. My friend always does their steak and chicken mixed fajitas. They have the best margaritas!

The menu has a symbol beside food that is gluten free. I ordered chicken tacos because they had the gluten free symbol. I also told the waitress that I have Celiac Disease and cannot eat anything with flour. The tacos looked and tasted like flour and after eating one I asked the waitress if they were corn tortillas. She smiled and said, " c orn tortillas!" and left. I ate part of the second taco and she came back to the table with a stack of corn tortillas. That is when I realized that I had been served flour tortillas. I explained that I couldn't eat the meal and they did not make me pay for it.

While this restaurant has several gluten free options marked on the menu, they didn’t seem to have the ability or creativity to alter much. It took several trips to the kitchen to discover that the chips are fried in a shared fryer. When asked if a corn tortilla could be toasted as a substitute for chips, I was told no. They are only prepared in the fryer. When I requested some plain corn tortillas, they did provide me with some warm ones and my own salsa, however, there was an extra charge for them on the bill, even though fried chips and salsa was provided for free. The menu didn’t list which side items were gluten free so I had to make some judgement calls, like the rice was probably okay (it was). The menu didn’t point out necessary substitutions on their items marked gluten free (ie. chicken served with flour tortillas, I need to sub corn ones and if I hadn’t asked, it wouldn’t have been done.)
In short, if you don’t want chips and you can stick to the menu options they have, and you are savvy enough to decipher the menu, it’s fine. But there are other mexican restaurants out there that are much more accommodating.

Server ignored our allergy twice during the meal, serving wheat tortillas with our gluten free meal, then not alerting us that the corn chips were cross contaminated, even though we asked. My daughter was very sick that night, through the next day, and into the following morning. I went back to speak to a manager to request that he retrain the server. He said his servers have already been trained and ignored the issue.
