Ordered fries and they were good! Fries are fried in a dedicated fryer in peanut oil. I let the cashier know that I had a had a gluten allergy and she let the line staff know and also specifically not to touch any bread buns. We asked them to bag my fries separately from my husband’s food and they did. The staff were all friendly and polite, and seemed happy!
I didn’t get a burger, but the burger patties are gluten free also (without the bread). It is a chain restaurant, not dedicated gluten-free, and a busy spot since they are in the airport, so do proceed with caution.
Staff were very confident and indicated they could do a gf lettuce wrap burger, said they would change gloves and no buns on grill. I had a cheeseburger that was juicy and delicious with fries from their dedicated fryer. Manager handled my order and gave it to me personally, I had no reaction.
Told the person at the counter I had celiac and asked for a glove change and to put our orders in separate bags. He looked at me like he had no idea what I was talking about, and when I watched them make the burgers they didn’t change gloves between touching the normal buns and the lettuce wrapped burger. Got sick after as well.
Five Guys Burgers and Fries is not dedicated Gluten-free, but it almost is. They are so dedicated as a chain to keeping things clean and safe that the only area with gluten is the assembly table. Most restaurants have two assembly tables and will leave one clean (unless they are experiencing a lot of traffic). They will use a tray on the clean table to make allergy continuous meals as safely as possible. I have eaten here twice and had no problems at all.
I’ve eaten here several times without issue. They call back across the line, “food allergy,” which prompts everyone to change their gloves and clean the preparation space (best they can do). They use lettuce to replace the bun, and since they don’t serve breaded fried items, the fryer is safe to order their yummy fries.
Full of cross-contamination. I told them I have a sever gluten allergy and asked for clean spaces and changed gloves. They will change their gloves, but prepare on the same surface. I went there with a group from work and the woman preparing my food changed her gloves, but before changing her gloves her hands were all over the aluminum foil she used to package my food. Then, someone else who did not change his gloves packaged it, which included touching my food. There were even visible bread crumbs from past buns on the counter they were sliding my food along. Yes, there was aluminum foil between my food and the counter, but when they wrapped it up, something that looked suspiciously like a bread crumb made it on top of my food. I did not eat it.
Sensitive Celiac. I chose to go to this chain because of the information found on the corporate site. When I asked at the counter about gluten free food items, the staff was very uncertain. One guy said no gluten free food here and walked away. The manager came to speak with me. Even he seemed a bit unsure. After our discussion about ingredients, the dedicated fryer, and other concerns, I felt okay ordering. I decided to get burger toppings piled into a cardboard fry box with a burger on top. I also had an order of fries. It felt like Russian Roulette, but in the end, I had no adverse reactions. The guy preparing the burgers even changed his gloves. If you order carefully and communicate well, this particular Five Guys can do in a pinch.
We go there frequently. Dedicated fryer they only fry French fries. They cook only burgers on 1 flat top and buns on a completely separate flat top. No gfree bun, but had the best bunless burger I have had in a Long time, and Super awesome fries! I get sick at the drop if a hat within 30 minutes and have Never gotten sick here.
The Plattsburgh crew is attentive and diligent when it comes to precautions. Both lettuce wraps or burger-in-bowl options are available and the fries are completely gluten free -- the fryer is for fries exclusively. I was told they assume celiac or a gluten allergy whenever a lettuce wrap or bowl option is ordered. The same holds true for ordering online or through their app. As an added precaution when ordering online, I always add "Gluten Free" to my first name so it's obvious: Gluten Free Mary, Gluten Free Bob, etc. I've never had an issue here, thankfully.
When I mentioned I was gluten free they assured me the burgers are cooked on a dedicated grill and fries in a dedicated fryer. They washed their hands and changed their gloves often while making my order and put the fries in their own bag, just in case the bottom of the burger foil had cross contamination on it.
They absolutely knew what they were doing when it comes to celiac disease! They have a dedicated fryer and the only thing that goes in it are the french fries that they cut and peel on site, no ingredients other than potatoes, salt, and oil. All of the bread is kept in a different area of the kitchen and the gluten-free bread is kept wrapped in packaging in a different area. They told me all of the options for making my meal gluten free which made this a great experience!
Management here is wonderful about training employees on allergen safety. On our last visit, we actually witnessed a new employee being trained on allergen procedures, and they were extremely diligent about preventing cross-contamination. I make sure to specify my “gluten allergy” and my item is clearly marked on my ticket. Bun alternatives include a burger bowl or lettuce wrap, and in my opinion they have mastered the lettuce wrap compared to other burger joints in the area (never falls apart, and an adequate amount of fresh crisp lettuce). French fries are the only thing they fry, and are fried in peanut oil. They’re also careful about packing my food separately from my non-GF husband. They are consistent and thorough, a great choice for a quick eat.
When we need a burger, we go here. A LOT. They don’t have GF buns but they’ll make any burger in a bowl, and they don’t use their fryers for anything other than French fries so no worries about cross contamination. Our Celiac kid loves it, hasn’t gotten sick from eating here even once.
They only put fries in the fryer, so it's safe!
I have eaten here in the past with no issues. Today was terrible. I asked for a refund. I stated gluten allergy and asked staff to change gloves. They didn’t change gloves. When I reminded them they made a face and changed gloves but then touched bread before making my lettuce wrap. When I said something about it the girl made a face. So I asked for a refund.
Fries are gluten free (nothing but potatoes go into the fryer), and burgers are grilled on a separate cooktop and with separate, clearly marked utensils from buns. Burgers can be served lettuce-wrapped or in a bowl. Almost all shakes are GF (just not Oreo or Reese’s mix-ins), so you may be able to get away with asking the staff to wipe down the shake blender wand to avoid cross contact.
Staff is moderately aware of gluten and food allergies. They’re happy to answer questions about condiments and food prep methods.
I went in because I was recommended to get the burger without the bun and the fries. I have an intolerance to gluten but cross contamination is NOT an issue for me. I ordered and she asked if I wanted a lettuce wrap and I said yes. She then asked specifics on whether it was choice or allergy and I told her cross contamination was fine. They looked clean and the lady at the counter knew about cross contamination. Over all great experience. They was cleaning the tables as people left also. Which had been rare in fast food these days.
