Gluten-Free at Torchy's Tacos

Summary - Yummy but had issues ordering from the gluten conscious menu and chips are in shared fryer.

Story - When I asked the server about gluten they immediately brought over the manager. Manager was great! They brought me the “gluten conscious” menu, explained that the chips are fried separately but the oil from both fryers are combined (so not GF but listed on the menu). I ordered the baja shrimp taco and the brisket taco on corn tortillas, mentioning the gluten allergy/menu to the server.

When the food came out, the shrimp was breaded and fried (so not GF), so we sent back with the server to redo. Then we realized that my partner’s burrito had vegan meat instead of the beef he ordered (burritos are not GF). He mentioned to manager who happened to walk by. Manager went back to kitchen and didn’t come back out until our food was out and correct. Everything was really good, including the mexican rice and street corn sides.

We tried to pay but the manager comped our meal. Very nice!

There is a bar and specialty cocktails but we didn’t try any.

I told the server I had celiac disease, explicitly asked her to indicate that I was GF on my ticket, and she did not. She also told me the chips are cooked in the same fryer as everything else, so I did not have any. Anyway, I ordered the airstream salad with the grilled chicken and have been sick all day :(

The person behind the counter seemed a bit unsure in dealing with gluten free requests, but then she also couldn't tell me what white wine they had, so she must have been new. Be sure to look at the "gluten conscious" menu to know your options before you order. That said, the chips are made in a dedicated fryer, and the queso and GF tacos we picked were great.

This location is great. Plenty of seating and the food is always good. Unfortunately they don’t have a dedicated fryer so bring your own chips so you can enjoy some of the best Queso in the Austin area.

Menu posted over ordering area is not marked GF but website has a complete GF menu that we used to pick out our order. Watch out when ordering off the overhead board since some tacos are made with corn tortillas and some with flour. Not the best spot for sensitive celiacs, but plenty of options for those who are avoiding gluten but not as sensitive. Tacos were good with some interesting ingredients, service was quick, and atmosphere was casual and friendly.

I've ordered here about once a week for the last 6 months or so. Three times, I've gotten flour tortillas when I ordered corn. (Online orders) I'm not highly allergic, so I just dump the contents on a plate and eat it with a fork. (And toss the flour tortilla) From now on, I'm checking before I leave the store. I'll eat here again, but writing this review so you all know to be careful.

I explained upon ordering that I have a severe gluten intolerance. They had zero idea what I was talking about. I ordered items they stated were safe. There is a ton of cross contamination here because I was so sick and in so much pain. So disappointed.

Server told me that they can sub corn for flour tortillas on any taco. Mentioned cross contamination in the fryer, told me they could find workarounds for friend ingredients. Warning!!!! I asked today if the chips are cooked in a separate fryer from the fried chicken they use on some tacos. The cashier wasn’t sure, so she went to the back and asked and told me that they DO fry them both in the same fryer. She said they use a separate basket. (Which obviously doesn’t help anything.) She said she was told the risk of cross contamination was like 1%. The reason I asked is that my celiac daughter has gotten sick the past two times we have eaten there (we were originally told the chips were gf and fried separately). We are so sad to lose this option as my daughter loves the chips and queso. I do know they can make some things gf, but the chips are not safe.

While the food is good it is not celiac safe at all. I opted in for a corn tortilla and flagged it for gluten allergy. I believe the tacos were wrapped in a flour tortilla. Don’t do it if you have celiac disease!

Owner and staff not at all knowledgeable about gluten free. Gave us a “list of ingredients”. Made it known they were irritated we asked questions. Kid did like the corn tortilla cheese quesadilla - hoping she doesn’t get sick. Other than the smallest quesadilla I’ve ever seen, not sure there would have been anything else she could have had. She left hungry.

I ordered 2 tacos off of their gluten conscience menu, telling them I had celiac disease (emphasizing it as a severe gluten allergy) and was still asked if I wanted the taco on flour or corn. Once I said it had to be corn, I was also offered it as a bowl. My order came out full of gluten (breaded shrimp instead of grilled). I sent it back and they basically just moved the gluten taco to a different basket. I asked about it and the guy tried telling me that it was grilled. A manager came over and apologized and they prepared a grilled shrimp taco. Now it's just a waiting game to see if they prepared it correctly.

Have gone twice now. First time asked staff for a gluten free menu and was told there wasn’t one. Tried to ask staff about items containing gluten, then ordered what I thought would be safe. My avocado taco arrived deep fried in some crumbs that I assumed were bread crumbs. Tried to order corn, a poor sub for a taco, but it was so salty it was inedible. Asked for refund and staff said manager would “ do it later”. Staff very rude. Refund never happened. I went home hungry. Complained on corporate site and got a gift card. Tried to go back many weeks later, was shown the one menu with gluten free choices, very limited and what I got was mediocre. Never going back. Lots of better taco restaurants in Phoenix to choose from.

I asked about gf options, they said almost anything can be gf. I ordered the Democrat taco and street corn. The street corn was delicious, the taco was bland. The main thing is that I was able to eat with no issues.

My stomach is in shambles. And the food was so mid, on top of the cashier being rude. I don’t think he marked my stuff GF as an allergy. The Democrat taco was okay but the bacon,egg and cheese one was awful. I couldn’t eat it.

Excellent food and safe environment. I order different tacos each time, and they are so good. When ordering just tell them your need for GF due to celiac or allergy or intolerance and they will note that in your order. This goes for other intolerances or allergies as well. I just tell them I need my food GF, dairy free, and rice free and they don’t even flinch. It’s awesome. Friendly staff that understands dietary restrictions and takes them seriously. They say they have a dedicated area for food preparation for those with food allergies.

Do not recommend for celiacs. They have gluten labeled items but I felt immediately sick after my last experience. I have only been a couple of times and have felt sick both times. I was diagnosed two years ago. I didn’t used to have noticeable symptoms but now post-diagnosis I get sick immediately now so I’m pretty sure it was gluten related.

Torchy’s was great! The cashier knew exactly what to do and was able to give me a GF menu and explained cross contact procedures. I had two tacos and a margarita and had no reaction.

Was sick after eating at this location. Spoke to a manager ahead of time, who assured me their food was celiac safe. She proceeded to tell me about how all tortillas, both corn and flour, are pressed together. Huh? I requested my tortilla not be pressed. Should have decided it wasn’t safe after speaking with the manager, but tried anyways, and felt very ill. My taco only had refried beans, cheese and avocado.
