Our daughter has asymptomatic celiac disease, and we are also vegan, so we know first hand how difficult it is to find a place that can feed us as safely as possible when we’re traveling. We went to the Apothecary because so many reviews from people with CD are positive. Here are the pros: the food tastes good, the portions are satisfying, they have many vegan options, the ambiance is relaxing. The cons: it’s expensive, but we knew that; they were understaffed so it took a while to get our food and our server, who turned out to be the owner, kept forgetting to bring us one of the drinks; she also told us that they don’t go out of their way to purchase ingredients that are certified GF! That was a surprise to us! At home I buy certified GF ingredients or ingredients that are not packaged in shared equipments etc: the fact that they don’t should then disqualify them, in my opinion, from being considered 100% gf, since they don’t care about using possibly contaminated ingredients. That’s of course just my opinion. We probably would have eaten there anyway and taken the risk, like we do when we choose to eat out in non gf places that offer gf options, but I felt a little deceived. For instance, we bought some of their loose leaf tea bags, which they make themselves, and one contains oat straw which is an ingredient that is obviously at high risk from cc unless obtained from certified gf oats or purity grown oats, which is something they don’t do, as per the owner. Such a long review to make sure that other celiac or gluten intolerant customers are aware, and make an informed decision to eat here.
