Review of Ben & Esther's Vegan Delicatessen

Review

I was excited to hear about this newly-opened deli, but was disappointed when I got here at 1 pm (they’re open 7 to 3). They were already out of gluten free bagels. Other breads aren’t gluten free. Plus the vegan lox isn’t gluten free—they use soy sauce to make it. I ended up with just a side order of vegan whitefish, which was fine, but I’d really been looking forward to a sandwich. I recommend getting here early in the day. I’m not rating them on safety — I’m not celiac and didn’t ask about their safety practices.

Edited to add: I went back a couple of days later and was able to get a sandwich on a gluten free bagel. However, this time the counter person told me that the lox *was* gluten free. I suspect it’s not safe to rely on the knowledge of the staff.
