While driving from South Orange County to Northern OC, I set out to find a convenient and safe dining option along the 5 freeway. Consulting the Find Me GF app and the Gluten Free Orange County CA Facebook group, I received multiple recommendations for Ben’s Fast Food – a haven for those with gluten, dairy, peanuts, fish, and shellfish allergies. And everything besides from the meat is Vegan! Yes please!

Arriving at the location, situated in an industrial park area, I was initially surprised by the simplicity of signs proclaiming “FOOD Pick up and take out.” Parking was a bit tight but manageable.

Stepping into the lobby, I encountered an unexpected setup featuring iPads and lockers. This establishment hosts various restaurants under one roof, with Ben’s Fast Food being one of them. The lobby had two kiosk areas—one with large iPad-looking kiosks for orders and another with smaller iPads for check-ins. Alternatively, you could order from Ben’s Fast Food website, which is what I opted for.

After a brief ten-minute wait, I received a notification on my phone that my order was ready. Despite a minor hiccup in trying to check in with my phone, the helpful staff assisted me at the window, locating my order using my name. My meal, neatly packed in a brown paper bag stamped with “Ben’s Fast Food,” came with a thoughtful card explaining their operational philosophy and a detailed receipt.

Now, onto the food! It was not only delicious but also surprisingly filling. My husband enjoyed the Hearty Chicken Bowl with Lemon Thyme Sauce, while I savored the Vegan Chickpea and Potato Bowl with Ben’s Ranch Sauce. The chicken was perfectly spiced and juicy, and the chickpeas and potatoes had a delightful crunch. The brown rice/millet mixture was fluffy and flavorful, complemented by the outstanding sauces. We couldn’t finish our meals, making it a great value at approximately $20 for two meals.

Grateful for another worry-free and safe dining experience, I discovered that the same location also houses a sister restaurant called Umami Express, catering to various allergies. I plan to explore their menu during my next visit while picking up more from Ben’s Fast Food. I also reached out to Ben’s Fast Food via email ([email protected]) about additional allergies, and Isaak responded promptly, ensuring their commitment to accommodating my needs.

Ending my day with a healthy and safe meal, I look forward to my next visit to Ben’s Fast Food!
