The owner is knowledgeable about ingredients. Be advised he menu is outdated. It says the sushi can be made GF but owner said the sushi rice may be cross contaminated. They have GF soy sauce (tamari) that they can cook with and bring to the table. We only get the steak hibachi with GF sauce and have had no reactions. Cannot speak to other items.

Found this place on this app and decided to give it a try thinking if I got there and felt uncomfortable I could at least get sushi. I asked about the king crab cali roll and due to shortages they only had imitation crab which isn’t gluten free, so I got a Philly roll for an appetizer which was delicious. Then I asked if the bulgogi could be gf but they didn’t have any beef marinated in the tamari so instead I got the bibimbap with chicken and fried tofu- YUM!! Our server went and relayed any questions he couldn’t answer to the chef who was knowledgeable and even came to check on me and ask how it was, and it was soo good!! The stone pot and the sauce they bring with it made the rice at the bottom crispy and the veggies and proteins were cooked perfectly. It was enough to have another large meal as leftovers. Will definitely go back if we’re ever in the area again! The miso soup was also gluten free and very tasty

After eating at Bonjung twice, I have nothing but good things to say! The wait staff and owners are so helpful. The owner gave me extensive information about the kitchen and prep methods as well as his restaurant’s ingredients, and was really nice about answering all my detailed questions. He even brought me photos of the labels on some ingredients to show that they were marked gluten free. He listened to what I told him about cross contamination and said that he now knows more ways to keep celiac diners safe and reassure us about the safety of our food.

On the menu, the gluten free dishes aren’t labeled, but the owner and staff can recommend the dishes that are either safe as they are or can be prepared safely. They know that the shared fryer and some sauces aren’t safe, but they also will do substitutions for people who are intolerant to gluten, such doing steamed rice in sushi or making a different sauce. As a vegan, I am used to my choices at Japanese restaurants being limited, but they have some very tasty options. Last time, I ordered the tofu teriyaki, which was breaded in potato starch and pan fried, so it was crispy without going in the deep fryer or needing wheat flour breading. They made the teriyaki sauce with gluten free soy sauce. It was well-seasoned, not too salty and really delicious, and had lots of nice vegetables in it. I felt great after eating it; I haven’t gotten sick while eating there either time. They also had a house-made gluten free soy dressing for my salad that was quite tasty. On my previous visit, I had some good veggie sushi. I believe that they can do almost all their maki and sashimi gluten free as well.

The restaurant has a warm, tranquil ambiance and a welcoming staff who take good care of their celiac customers. They’re also good with families and kids. Highly recommended!
