Cali Cream Homemade Ice Cream

I was unfortunately glutened here. My server gave me the wrong flavor- banana cream pie, and I unfortunately did not notice it until it was too late because I got 2 flavors in my cup, and it was was buried under my first flavor. All of their flavors that are gluten free are marked, but if you go here, make sure you emphasize that you are following a gluten free diet. You can’t really see which flavors they are scooping for you since all their freezers are away from the counter. They do have many gluten free options, but there is a high risk of cross-contamination/getting the wrong flavor if you are not vigilant about communicating your restriction.

This place was a welcome vacation stop. My husband and I have a tradition of getting ice cream when we go on vacation and I was diagnosed a couple of weeks before we left on our trip to San Diego. I was pleasantly surprised to find this ice cream place that has gluten-free flavors and even more surprised when they also had gluten-free bakery items. One of the staff mentioned that the owner is celiac and is increasing their gluten-free product. The mint chip ice cream was very good. The staff was friendly and fun and very clear on what was and was not gluten free in the store. I also found the elusive gluten-free chocolate chip cookie here so I was super excited to take one to go!! It was a little on the sweet side but that just meant I didn't eat it all in one sitting. I very much enjoyed the ice cream, the cookie and the entire experience. If I head back to San Diego I will definitely be heading back here.

The person who served me was pretty terrible. I asked her which options are gluten-free and she said “probably any that don’t have cookies in them.” I asked if the cotton candy fizz in Matcha with Ube or gluten free and she said she believes so I asked if she could check and she did, but seemed annoyed. I had also saying the gluten-free cones were available in the reviews on Find Me Gluten Free, but when I asked, she said, “I think they all probably have gluten.” I asked, “can you ask if there are gluten-free cones?” She again seemed annoyed , asked a fellow associate, and said no. Ice cream was fine, but definitely nothing to write home about.

Menu is not labeled but both employees were very knowledgeable. The kahlua espresso chip was delicious. Their ice cream is well made and perfectly creamy.

Ice cream is so fresh. Lots of gluten free ice creams and even some gluten free cones! Staff is fairly knowledgeable about what contains gluten and scoops are sanitized between orders.
