Maybe this place used to be accommodating based on the other reviews (all pre 2020). But it’s certainly NOT now. Their online menu has the “gringo breakfast” as bacon, eggs, and gluten free toast, so I thought I could at least get that.

I told our waitress I had a “gluten allergy” and asked if I could just have the bacon and eggs cooked on a clean part of the grill and with clean utensils. She went back and talked to the kitchen and returned with “we can’t guarantee anything”. I reiterated, I don’t need a guarantee, I just need them to make my stuff on a cleaned part of the grill with clean utensils. Then she said “well, how clean do you need it?” And I said literally just wipe it off with a clean wet dishrag, which she said she didn’t know if they could do.

I ended up not eating and sat there while the others ate (they had already submitted their orders so we couldn’t leave). It was embarrassing. Apparently they do have gluten free bread though as she offered me an untoasted slice as the next available option, which I declined because i wasn’t going to pay for that.

We ate at El Jefe based on the reviews. The huge bummer was the fact that this place is not at all celiac friendly when it comes to chips - which I was so looking forward to. I even showed our server the reviews here saying there was a separate frier. They told me it’s just not true, but gave us the most delicious tortillas I’ve had in a long time. The food was delicious; the drinks were awesome; and the atmosphere was fantastic. Just no chips :(

They do not have a gluten free menu but most of the menu is gluten free. Our server Jeff was very helpful. Chips are fried in a dedicated fryer but it is right next to the other fryer so they could be cross contaminated. I had the beef tacos. They were delicious!!

Knowledgable staff and wonderful food. This is totally foodie Mexican at its best. Highly recommend taco tuesdays! They have a rotating menu of small, street tacos which are $1 on tuesdays and they’re always incredible!
