Hungry Sumo

Used to be my all time favorite restaurant- sushi is incredible and the staff is lovely. BUT, even though they have a very clearly labeled allergy menu (what contains gluten, nuts, etc - including cross contact with oil for seafood allergies) they simply CANNOT cater to celiac. I have gotten sick the past two times I’ve gone so the most recent time I went, I asked that they use a different cutting board with my sushi to avoid cross contamination, and they said it is not possible for them to do that and that cross contact with gluten is not something they cater to. The waitress told me there is only one item on the menu that I can be GUARANTEED safety eating - shrimp pad Thai. It was fine, but needless to say I am SOO disappointed that we cannot go there anymore.

Hour and a half wait, very restricted gluten free menu since they pre-marinate their beef and chicken in soy sauce, but pad Thai, other Thai dishes, various nigiri and sushi are gluten free, given gf tamari, pretty good food.

Excellent place for sushi and Asian fusion. They have a VERY clear allergen menu — ask for it. This was the best quality sushi I’ve had in a very long time. I’ll definitely go back and try their pad thai!

Just want to add a review to keep things fresh here. Hungry Sumo is one of my go-to places in Bayview.

I'm a sensitive celiac and eat here often and have never had an issue. I usually get GF Pad Thai, it's sooo good!!

A note about spice: I like spicy food, so I normally order it "spicy". The non spicy food eaters in the family say that's too much for them. If you're not sure, go for the milder options.

The staff asked if there were any allergies to be aware of at the beginning of service. They have a specific menu that highlights everything that is gluten-free or can be made gluten-free.

First question our waiter asked was of there were any allergies at the table. 😳 He gave me a separate menu. Lots of options and amazing sushi. Probably the best sushi I’ve had in Milwaukee.
