The majority of the food is gluten free, and delicious! The waiters seemed knowledgeable and would check with the kitchen if they had any questions!

Maya is not dedicated GF anymore, but they have LOTS of options. Things are marked as “containing gluten” instead, since most is GF! It was nice to feel normal for a bit haha. Had no issues here, would go back bc food was great

Updated: this restaurant is no longer dedicated GF.
Maya exceeded my expectations. Both people in our party must eat gluten-free because of celiac, so we went to Maya knowing our dietary restrictions and food allergies could be accommodated. It was also my birthday which I noted on my reservation. When we arrived, there was not only a personalized menu with my name on it but also a birthday card. This simply gesture from the restaurant was a very unexpected surprised and so sweet. The menu had my allergens in red, so I knew which dishes to stay away from. I have been dining gluten-free for more than 40 years and this is the first time a restaurant created me a specially-printed menu like this. I was very impressed. While I was only visiting Charleston, I will recommend this place to anyone who tells me they are traveling there. I loved my meal, the service, and the ambiance and I would definitely go back!

More gluten free options than a lot of other places. Server was very knowledgeable. Was able to order a burrito bowl gf. I am very sensitive and no issues. Server did inform us that the fryer is cross contaminated so that's a bummer. Food was delicious.

They have a new menu with lots of gluten items. This is no longer a gluten free safe space. Fryer is shared. I still ate the tacos, but am having issues today. I won’t return.

Wonderful experience! No gluten free menu, but our server was extremely knowledgeable and only a couple things on the menu aren’t naturally GF. We had the guacamole and chips to start, devine, then shared the beef tacos, beans and rice, all outstanding. Because it was our anniversary, she brought us a really decadent flourless dessert. Came out warm and topped with whipped cream, one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. My extremely sensitive celiac husband had no issues. Highly recommend.

no longer fully gf. very disappointed because this was one of the only restaurants that i felt truly safe eating at. they can no longer guarantee no cross contamination. for somewhere that is no longer fully gf i wouldn’t eat here. the food isn’t that great now that the safety aspect is gone. there are so so so many places that taste better for cheaper.

I highly recommend this place it was so yummy and very good with gluten free! It was the second night of their new menu. When we sat down our waitress asked if we had an allergies at our table (love when restaurants do this!) she said the only things that had had gluten were the crunch wrap and the quesadillas (they use flour tortillas) and everything else was either gluten free or could be made gluten free🙌, the menu wasn’t marked. I had the chips and salsa and the fired fish tacos! For dessert we had the caramel tres leaches (it was amazing, I want to go back just to eat that!) overall I would definitely go back again!

Almost the entire menu is naturally gluten free! Our waitress immediately let us know they have a GF kitchen (save the 1 item) and asked if there were any allergies. My husband and I shared chips and a trio of salsa. I had the quesadillas which were delicious!

Best place for a celiac in Charleston (that I’ve found so far)! Fun drinks, delicious tacos, informed staff. I love sitting on the back patio…so pretty. And so nice to feel normal in a restaurant that I can order most everything (my last visit they did tell me the churros are no longer GF unfortunately).

Our group was a little hesitant that Maya would be too “fancy” for us, but it was a great combination of upscale, modern Mexican with a very comfortable atmosphere. Plus, it’s in an awesome location in the Charleston historic district. Only one item HAS gluten and it is clearly marked. Staff was fantastic and knowledgeable. Lots of GF options. In the top 5 of all restaurant experiences I’ve had with my 2 celiac kiddos. Highly highly recommend.

Upscale Mexican. Everything on the menu is gluten free except the crunchwrap supreme, the waitress claimed. Didn’t see GF marked. Dedicated gluten-free fryer that never sees wheat. The food was good. Heads up, the shrimp were poached in the tacos, not grilled. Brisket was good. Chips were ok. Lebanese tacos were juicy/tasty. Brussels were interesting, and on drier side. No problem with the food afterwards. Not really options for even slightly picky kids. Good to get a reservation, they open at 5pm but call hours ahead to get a table if nothing on Open Table. Parking a minor challenge.

Restaurant is dedicated GF except for one item, which they cook in a separate part of the kitchen. Waitress checked with the chef repeatedly and seemed very knowledgeable. Very sensitive celiac - ordered the elotes and aguachiles which tasted great.

Ate here first night on a trip to Charleston. Excited to go somewhere with the entire menu gluten free except one entree. Ordered fish tacos and queso. No reaction and I am very sensitive. Would have given 5 stars but our waiter seemed like he got called in on his night off or just didn’t want to be there. Then come to find out we were given misprinted menus that showed the tacos came with beans and rice. When I didn’t get beans and rice he simply told us we were wrong and brought us a menu that didn’t show it but I specifically remembered the menu showed black beans and rice so asked the table next to us if we could see their menu which also showed black beans and rice with tacos. Manager simply said they will remove the misprinted menus. No one offered to bring beans and rice which would have cost them almost nothing. Other than that awkwardness of them trying to prove to us we never read that the food was great.

Dedicated gf and staff that was assuring and knowledgeable. Food was great and the drinks were creative and delicious. It was so nice to be able to enjoy our dinner without worry. Portion sizes were nice, although there wasn’t enough guacamole for all of the chips we were given. Awesome desert options!

We had the BEST experience and the most delicious food at Maya tonight. This is our first time and can’t wait until our next time in CHS to go again! The staff was so friendly and I felt so comfortable being in a place that was dedicated gluten free! To be able to share dishes with my family and try all different things on the menu was a treat! Highly recommend the Short Rib Mole Rojo and their guacamole too!

This is a must!! Their kitchen is 100% gluten free. Although they do offer regular beers, the bar area is completely separate from the kitchen, and they also gf drink options like ciders. We had the queso and chips, carnitas tacos, Mahi Mahi tacos, and finished the meal with churros. Everything was so fresh and incredible, I wish I could have tried the entire dessert menu. We also tried the different hot sauces with our tacos, and I would highly recommend trying the hottest one, it was so good!
Our server was so sweet, and noticed from my ID that my birthday was coming up, and took care of our churros for us! Such a fantastic experience, I was so full by the time we left.

Very friendly staff, dedicated gluten free menu. Everything on the menu is gluten-free. I had enchiladas the first night with loads of avocados. My second night I had theshort rib. Dessert both nights first churros, delicious the second night chocolate cake in Mexican hot chocolate. We were in town for two days and ate there both nights. It was delicious!

This is the first time I have visited Charleston. It is rare that an entire restaurant's menu is safe for me with no risk of cross contamination. It is even rarer when both food and service are so extraordinarily good.
My friend and I enjoyed our experience so much we had dinner here three times. There was not a single thing we tried that we didn't love. Over the course of our visits, I sampled the watermelon, ginger-pineapple and chile-mango margaritas. All delicious, and the flavors of the latter two were rich and complex.
The chips were served hot and fresh every time and the guacamole (chunky) had just the right amount of lime. My favorite dish was the Tuna Tostada - the tuna was fresh and the spice level just right, every bite a burst of flavor. Tacos (we tried brisket) and enchiladas (we had chicken mole and calabaza - butternut squash) were so tasty, with corn tortillas that were the perfect texture.
Surprise! Desserts were gluten free too, and I had churros for the first time in more than 10 years. Yum! The sorbet and ice cream are made locally. The Tres Chocolates cake? Piping hot and oh so good.
The service was stellar every time we visited - prompt, efficient, warm. On our 3rd visit, they had our table set with a few sweet surprises. I'll definitely return on future visits to Charleston.

Everything was gf and everything was super delicious. We did a 5pm seating, before any crowd, and the service was lightning fast. Had the guacamole and chips to start, best guacamole I’ve ever had. Smooth and creamy, a hint of lime and onion; the corn chips were light and not greasy at all, perfect amount of salt, delivered warm. Mahi tacos, brisket tacos, chick tacos, and chicken mole enchiladas were our mains. Topped this off with the homemade churros with melted chocolate and the gelato. Both delicious. Not inexpensive at all, but everything was great, with outstanding service. Highly recommend Maya!

Yes, you can really order ANYTHING! It’s 100% gluten-free. We had a blistered shishito pepper app (with GF soy sauce), chips and salsa, and split 3 sets of tacos: chicken, brisket and mahi mahi, which were our favorite. Also, GF churros for dessert! 🙌🏼🎉

SO GOOD! As a celiac I was in heaven, both my friend and I loved it. We got the nachos (a MUST) the chips + salsa, the chicken tacos, and the pork carnitas tacos (another must, way better than the chicken) and ended the night with churros.
Also such a cute and trendy venue, waitstaff are incredibly friendly and the service was very fast.

Awesome experience. Our friendly, knowledgeable server, Lindsey, made great recommendations. Everything is gluten free. There is no wheat flour in Maya. I had the brussel sprouts appetizer. Spiced beautifully! The best sprouts I ever had. I had the Calabaza enchilada with brisket. My husband had chicken mole. Both were wonderful. We finished it off with churro's and horchata sorbet. Margaritas was tasty. As a celiac, I loved this restaurant and my husband also loved it. We'll be back!
