Mikado Japanese Steakhouse

Mikado was very good. I had Mikado meal of steak, lobster and scallops. It came with steamed white rice and stir fry veggies and shrimp all cooked on grill Teppanyaki style. I told server I’m gluten sensitive and asked about oil. They use cottonseed oil which can be as inflammatory as canola oil. They explained only the sauces had gluten in them so they gave me GF sauce. For desert they gave us green tea ice cream. I had minor reaction because of oil.

I had informed the staff I was gluten free while making the reservation. Our teppan chef was wonderful. He said “if she’s gluten free, you’re all gluten free tonight”. He made all table cooked items with gluten free soy sauce. He advised of the sauces and dressing that had gluten. I felt safe and could relax and enjoy my meal.

The salad dressing contains gluten so be sure to ask, despite acknowledging my allergy at the start of dinner, had I not double checked with the server I’d have been served it. Additionally, the ginger sauce contains gluten and was put on the veggies and bean sprouts and I had to ask again, and they apologized and remade it for me. At the end of dinner, the ice cream was brought to me with the cookie in it and the server asked if I could eat it or needed a new one, I had to have a new one. They made it right every time after a mistake, but had I not been hyper vigilant I would have been poisoned. I find that for restaurants of this price range where I expect to feel completely safe, I’d choose something else next time.

Edit: I use allergy for simplicity, I know it’s not an allergy technically.

Mikado is a Japanese steak house where they cook for the entire group at the grill (like Benihana). When I told them I was allergic to gluten, they used Tamari rather than soy sauce so I could eat everything they prepared, even the fried rice.For the salad they had olive oil & vinegar as their dressing has gluten.They warned me that all of their sauces had gluten. My steak and shrimp were excellent as was the chef’s show. The kids loved it.For dessert, they knew to not give me the cookie with the green tea ice cream.
