I have eaten at Mike's Place many times before being diagnosed with Celiac Disease and the food and service have typically been good. That being said, I visited there the first time today since being diagnosed and found out that, despite their impressive "gluten free" menu both online and in the restaurant, they apparently do not understand the importance of avoiding cross contamination. One if the appetizers listed on their "gluten free" menu is chips and salsa. However, after we had already ordered these, I asked the server if these chips were fried in house and, if so, was it in a dedicated fryer, just to be sure. She advised me that she did not know and had never thought about this before. She was more than happy to ask the manager but returned to inform me that the chips are fried in a shared fryer, thus making them not truly gluten free. (She did apologize several times and we were not charged for the chips and salsa.) Also, just as a warning, I noticed that they have a couple of entrees with a choice of soy-ginger or honey-soy sauces/glazes on their "gluten free" menus. I am not sure if they actually use gluten free soy sauce (I doubt it) or not, but when I mentioned this to the server, she stated that she was unaware that regular soy sauce contains gluten. Overall, they do have some options that definitely could be gluten free and our server did try to help as much as she could; however, I would recommend asking questions and not just assuming the "gluten free" menu is correct, as it seems like more education needs to be done in all areas here. (I did not request so speak to a manager - not sure if they might have been better informed.)
