Review of Nijiya Market

Review

Great medium size, clean Japanese grocery near The highway in San Mateo. Must try if you are in the peninsula. During the pandemic, when sushi was inconsistent at many of our usual restaurants, we started going to Nijiya.

The sashimi (look for packed that day) is very fresh and tasty. I do not get pre-made nigiri because of the wasabi (often has corn starch that is not labeled gf). We buy seaweed, microwave brown rice (if in a pinch) and make our own bowls at home.

The sliced, plain meats like beef and pork are great. The veggie selection is fresh and what you'd expect. The fresh local tofu paired with mizuna, sesame oil and mirin makes a wonderful salad.

TIP: Go in morning or by lunchtime for best selection. By 5pm, sushi selection thins out. I have never gotten sick here (very sensitive) and would recc but I stick to plain meats, sashimi and veggies.
