For context, I have a severe form of gluten sensitivity known as Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity. It's not a fad diet nor is it a preference and it certainly does not promote weight loss which are some of the common misconceptions and judgments made regarding this condition.

Ingesting gluten causes serious neurological symptoms such as inflammation of the brain, ataxia which is speech difficulties and issues with balance and coordination, debilitating migraine, joint swelling, nausea and excessive vomiting. For this reason, I avoid eating out and cook most meals at home. These symptoms have been confirmed medically and are indisputable, despite the major amount of ignorance amongst restaurant staff.

Anyone who has a gluten intolerance knows that you can't plan everything in advance, especially when out of town or when out with other people who don't have a gluten sensitivity/allergy. My boyfriend wanted to eat here and he looked it up and saw that they have a GF menu, which was a sign that I could find something to eat and not get sick, this couldn't have been any further of base from what I experienced.

The staff member who took our order was extremely agitated and dismissive about my request for a burger with a gluten free bun, which is a pretty simple request. She didn't allow me the opportunity to even state that I had an allergy because she seemed to have the opinion based on her body language, tone of voice and facial expressions that I was a hypochondriac eating a fad diet, a common and EXTREMELY dangerous misconception that has landed many unsuspecting diners in the ER and dealing with severe side effects for weeks.

There were several red flags throughout my experience, so many that I left and took the food to go because I was extremely uncomfortable and made to feel unwelcome. The waitress didn't inquire as to whether I had an allergy or if cross contamination would be an issue. She just told me that the burger would be served on an UDI's gluten free bun.

The top bun of the burger was an UDI's bun but the bottom bun was definitely a wheat bun. Anyone with a gluten allergy knows that UDI's buns are tiny in diameter and they barely cover the burger patty. I've been gluten free for 7+ years and I've eaten them on many occasions. They're also drier and have a distinct texture. The bottom bun was massive compared to the top bun, I'd say at least 2x the size. I figured there was no way that the staff would purposely give me a wheat bun out of spite due to the strange and odd fascination and stigma that many restaurant workers seem to have when it comes to gluten allergies. If you've encountered this type of waiter, manager or chef then you know exactly what I'm talking about, this was that scenario to a T.

Less than 24 hours later I'm contemplating going to the ER, I have a severe migraine, I've vomited all day, I can't hold down any food or fluids, my joints are swelling and I've been in the worst pain I've felt in years, so much so I haven't been able to get out of bed. If you eat here you're taking a major risk of not only experiencing a cross contamination situation but being blatantly given wheat products out of lack of education or spite.

DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU HAVE A GLUTEN SENSITIVITY OR ALLERGY. YOU'RE AT THE MERCY OF THE STAFF'S MOOD AND ATTITUDE AND YOU'RE TAKING A MAJOR RISK. ILL BE REGRETTING THIS FOR THE NEXT 2 WEEKS. DONT WALK PAST THIS PLACE, RUN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION.
