Gluten Intolerant

Overall Rating

Review

Some items don’t have gluten naturally but they could be cross-contaminated at Pambiche. There is no dedicated fryer and oddly, even the plantains and yucca are prepared in the deep fryer! But when you tell them you are gluten intolerant they may not inform you of that fact (they didn’t me). I have been there twice and I never felt like I got the value that I paid for—food OR drinks. It is always too busy to sit inside, but who would want to with how crowded and noisy it is? And the picnic tables outside are just as uncomfortable. Once we had a casserole with raisins like my Cuban mother used to make, and that was tasty. But since there is zero effort for cross-contamination I will avoid going again.

Although items are marked GF, many are not. The fryer is cross-contaminated which eliminates all fried food such as the fritters, tostones, plantains, etc etc. the waiter was helpful in checking with the chef about what I could/couldn’t eat, but I ended up suffering a couple hours later, so think I was still cross-contaminated.

Staff seemed knowledgeable and I had no issues with the Ajiaco (a delicious “pepper pot” stew. The place is really small so on a weeknight it was packed and we had to wait outside for >1hr.

Their food is delicious and the atmosphere is fun but they are not Celiac friendly. When I asked our waiter to inform the cook that my meal needs to be prepared Celiac friendly, she responded with they are too busy for that. She told me my meal meal was gluten free. A few hours after eating my meal, I reacted. The chance for cross contamination is too high here. Also note anything fried (including their plantains and yucca) is used in the same fryer as gluten items.

If I travel to Portland this is the one restaurant that I always have to visit. The food is amazing, be sure to tell your server that you are gluten free. I've been eating here for three years now and have never once been disappointed.

Love this place! Amazing flavors, lots of options, but no dedicated fryer. We've gone numerous times with our super sensitive little guy who's never reacted. Gets very busy and there can be a long wait for both a table and food, so we go early. Their drinks are amazing too....
