I hate writing a 1-star review, but this restaurant needs a warning.
I had heard that R&D had gluten free dumplings, so I called to find out more. I got the owner when I called. He said that the dumplings are gluten free, but not wheat free, as he uses wheat starch in the dough.
I’ve been looking for gluten free wheat starch for making my own dumplings, so I asked where he buys his. He said he gets it in Chinatown, that any Chinese grocery store will have wheat starch.
That’s when I realized he isn’t using gluten free wheat starch. He’s using regular wheat starch that will have gluten cc. We argued a bit about whether or not regular wheat starch is safe for people with celiac. He insisted it is, and told me to google.
I googled. It isn’t safe.
Based on this lack of understanding and unwillingness to consider that he is making a mistake, I don’t feel safe trusting any of the food marked gluten free at R&D.
— Not at all
Took my partner(celiac) here for the first time. There is a allergen menu available, and the staff are very knowledgeable and accommodating about celiac and aware of the cross contamination risk. The food is great if you like contemporary Chinese food. There's only one GF item on the appetizers, but more than half of the small and large dishes can be made GF.
