The menu has items that can be made gf labeled on their menu. I had the gf fried whole belly clams and haddock meal. It was beyond delicious! They’re also GREAT with other allergies too! My MIL has a capsaicin allergy so no spicy and no black or white pepper. Our waitress went above and beyond to make sure that everything that my mil ordered was safe. Her meal was also delicious. I know that we will be back there soon for dinner…. And I can’t wait to eat!!

My celiac partner and I had such a good experience here! Most things are already gluten free, portions were good, and the food was delicious. We ordered the fried calamari as an appetizer, it was alright, my celiac partner really enjoyed the sauce. We ordered the salmon and burger for our mains, and both dishes were scrumptious. We also got the creme brulee cheesecake and it was absolutely awesome. I had a piece of mind eating here and if we're ever in the area we will definitely return.

I love River House so much. The menu has something for everyone. Almost all of it is celiac-safe and the wait staff is knowledgeable about what isn’t. There’s a dedicated fryer. I don’t eat fried food often but I think about these chicken tenders when I want it because they are SO good and I’ve never gotten sick there. It’s also a lovely atmosphere with views over the river.

Staff knowledgeable and fryers do not get any gluten introduced. For once GF available items outnumbered non GF items. Meal was very good. Fried haddock sandwich and fried chicken tenders.

I’ve now eaten here twice on this trip and they are amazing! I’ve had the gluten free crab cakes and fries and then the gluten free haddock and Shrimp and it was AMAZING. The Haddock was falling apart. The breading was absolutely delicious. When I go back to CA, I will be haunted by how amazing this was! And the staff have been nice to my boyfriend and super helpful.

Update 10/28/23: This is the first time in several years eating here that I was not confident that cross-contamination might not be an issue. Since our last visit last year, there are now items on the menu that cannot be made GF. They have a new menu with GF notations of which items can be made so. They use non-GF pasta, apparently, as at least a couple of menu items can’t be made GF. No GF desserts any longer, either. The seafood chowder tasted very different this time. Good, but decidedly different. And they hadn’t changed that recipe in many award-winning decades. And I liked the old one better. I ended up taking a couple GliadinX enzyme capsules with the starter just in case. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Old review: We ate dinner here twice in two days based on reviews in this app. I’m celiac and usually find cross-contamination is my worst enemy at restaurants. I had the seafood chowder as an appetizer on both days (because it was so good the first time), and the broiled haddock on day 1 and fried shrimp and haddock on day 2. I should mention I’ve also been dx’d with SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) and seem to react to onion and garlic. I had no adverse issues on either diagnoses on either day, but did feel a bit bloated after the fried dinner for a couple hours, and bathroom results later and the next day were somewhat affected. Not sure exactly why, since there are many possibilities, but I don’t think it was a gluten problem. I usually eat plainly and these foods were quite rich. I also had a GF brownie dessert on day 1 that I never have. And who doesn’t cook without onion or garlic? So each of those possible reasons plus the fact that I never eat more than one meal out in a row anymore, it’s possible that just one meal wouldn’t have produced the same results. I’d have no problem eating here again. Just let them know you’re celiac before ordering. GF menu is extensive, but they say they can make nearly everything GF. All fried foods whether ordered off the GF or regular menu are made with GF breading, so no cross-contamination from the fryer at all. As near as I can tell, this is Portsmouth’s most reliable GF restaurant for lunch and dinner for celiac folks.

Really impressed with the gluten free options and the procedures they have in place when mentioning gluten free was required. Greatly enjoyed the lobster artichoke drip, calamari, and fish tacos. The tacos were light with a pleasurable light flavor. Tater tots were crazy good also. Sat outside on a beautiful day. Will happily go back!

We’re at the point that when we travel, finding a place where our two celiac daughters can order anything they want safely brings me to tears of happiness. This is one of those places. OMG such amazing food and like everything is GF. So so good! (And seriously GF Fried clams)
Lobster Artichoke Dip, Seafood Chowder, AND Crab Cakes and yes fried clams. we are VERY HAPPY and seriously stuffed.
Wait staff is amazing, fun vibe, food is great, music perfect, and we’re right in the harbor.
If you head to Portsmouth, check this place out.
They have fully dedicated fryers - as in none of their fried food has any gluten. And they all took classes on cross-contamination and are very knowledgeable.
A celiacs’ dream. Heaven.

The seafood chowder was extraordinary! Great knowledgeable waitress! Everything was good. One small note: the gf bun on my crab cake BLT was not toasted and was cold and crumbly. It took away from what could have an extra special experience. Bothersome because my partner had a non gf bun on his fish sandwich which was toasted. The truffle oil and Parmesan waffle fries were to die for! Would definitely come back again, maybe ask for toasted bun or have on a salad.

Oh my god…the variety of gluten free options on this menu was overwhelming! We got tenders, calamari, oysters, fish tacos. Everything was great, albeit kind of small serving sizes for the apps. I forgot to tell the waitress we had an allergy and caught her after some of the food was prepared and have a hunch they went back and redid some of the plates, which was great. Highly recommend and sit outside on the patio!

OMG!! I haven’t been overwhelmed by menu choices (in a great way) since I was diagnosed with celiac until I came to River House. The menu had an amazing amount of gluten-free choices are very clearly marked. Our server is definitely aware of allergies/cross-contamination, and all of our food came out labeled allergy. All that is unreal on its own, but couple it with excellent service, a great view, and amazing tasting seafood… This just may be my new favorite restaurant
