They have a gluten free menu but ask to make sure what you want is gluten free as some of the items are questionable in my opinion -- like the add-ons for a steak may not be-even though they have them listed on the gluten free menu. Staff was very aware of contamination issue. The manager stopped by to explain why I shouldn't get the horseradish butter on my steak (had worchester sauce in it and they didn't know if that was gluten-free which was a good catch on their part). All in all - good food and they have a sincere desire to make sure what you order and what they deliver is gluten free. And I didn't have any problems after eating there.
Great menu however waitress was not knowledgable. Asked if fries were cooked in a dedicated fryer and not with foods like chicken fingers. Waitress responded, " yeah, I'm pretty sure of it" I pressed for more information and asked can you check for sure ? She returned and said "no" it is not dedicated and fries are cooked with everything. I dodged a bullet and if I didn't press for more info I'd be hurting now.
I always get nervous about chain restaurants that consider themselves gluten-free...but I've eaten here twice and haven't gotten sick. Make sure you discuss everything you order with your server, and even call the manager over...my second time going my server was unaware the fryer was not gluten-free. Delicious hamburgers!
Found a battered crispy under my fries. Called and they said they had gluten free chicken nuggets so I continued to eat. There is no way they were gluten free. I'm so sick. Don't go here if celiac.
The wait staff and managers answered all my questions regarding their gluten free menu. Regretfully, not all items shown on the menu (French fries) are not gluten free (not a dedicated fryer, shared with all fried items). However, the manager assured me and my daughter (both with Celiac) that the steak kabobs and garlic mash potatoes were GF (the manager had the chef clean the grill prior to preparing the steaks). Our food was very good and the other members of our family raved about their food. This was our first trip to Saltgrass, and San Antonio plus our first trip since being diagnosed with Celiac. We will be visiting again in the future because of our experience.
Had been forewarned by a review I had read about the Caesar salad being contaminated by a dusting of croutons which means that all they did was just remove the croutons. I therefore made it a point to be very clear that my Caesar salad should NOT have any croutons and that my diet was not a fad but necessary since I was a celiac. However when I was halfway through eating it, I discovered that I had just crunched on a piece of crouton. I abandoned it and made a complaint and the Manager came to apologize, but the damage had been done. Did not order the French Fries because of what I had read about these being fried in oil that had been previously used to fry food with gluten; was informed by the waiter when I asked that this was true. However, if this item is contaminated, it should not be an item on the GF menu and is misleading. I might add that I had years ago encountered a similar problem with the Caesar Salad at another of their locations. As a result I have lost confidence in what they claim to be Gluten Free.
First off, they list fries on the gf menu except they are fried in shared oil. No where is this mentioned on the gf menu. When I asked the waiter, he said they were fine. When I pressed him to check with the kitchen, he came back and said they were not gf. Secondly, I ordered a gf Caesar salad and found crouton crumbs (not actual croutons but crumbs as if someone had just picked the croutons off). Afterward, I spoke with the manager who seemed concerned but did not do much restore my confidence in visiting again anytime in the near future.
GF menu with many choices. I took the burger with the GF bun and upon reception asked to the waiter how to make difference with regular bun. He told me the GF bun has no sesame seeds on it and is whiter. The manager came to see me to reassure me about the GF bun and to enquire about my satisfaction.
Saltgrass is a reliably good steakhouse, reasonably priced, and offers a GF menu. So many steakhouses in Houston are very expensive, this is a good option with full meals available under $20. As for atmosphere, think more longhorn cattle than white tablecloth.
I will not go here again, we ordered a GF meal, and went over every item on the menu with the waiter, who double checked and was told that it was in fact GF, and prepared that way. After ordering and eating and looking again at the menu, I asked why the tortilla chips were not on the GF menu and was told because they were fried in a shared fryer, ok, so how did you cook the fries that I just ate with my GF meal?? In that same fryer, is what I was told. These people need more training.
Very thoughtful and helpful about what is in their stuff and what isn't. If they don't know, they go ask, and are polite and service oriented Great Food!!
I am very sensitive to cross contamination and Saltgrass is one of the few restaurants I can actually eat without getting sick. They do not have dedicated fryers but since the staff is knowledgeable about it and all the menu items containing gluten, I can eat safely.
They have added a gluten free menu and there were a lot of options. They had everything from appetizers, soups and salads and entrees. The only negative is that they don't have any desserts. The waitress was very attentive and the food was fantastic. This is always one of our go to restaurants.
the staff were knowledgeable and helpful about gluten concerns, they have a decent sized GF menu, I asked and was informed that the fryer is not not dedicated. my experience was great and I intend to return.
I had the 12oz ribeye with mixed vegetables and a Caesar salad. Talked to the manager when we first got there and she assured me she would talk to our server as well as the kitchen staff regarding my gluten intolerance. No cross contamination. Food was good. Grateful to have had a good experience. Service was great, too.
I was excited about their having a gluten-free menu but not everything on that menu is actually safe to eat. The server and manager took seriously my needs based on my having Celiac disease and they returned after taking my order to inform me that the potato soup and green beans (really?) were not safe for me to eat. Salmon was dry and they had a hard to getting my friend's steak cooked properly. They took a LONG time to bring out the food! Only ice cream for dessert.

Great food! Was a little worried when talking with waiter. I asked about separate fryers...and he said that they were...but I couldn't have fries because they aren't on the gluten-free menu. But they ARE on the menu...so I wasn't sure what to think about that. But I guess he was just being overly cautious??? Either way I had the steak and grilled shrimp and it was delicious. No ill effects. One happy celiac! :)
They have a GF menu. When i was served, my server and told me she was GF and the shrimp and ribs were her favorite. Great staff and tasty food.
Great gluten free menu with a lot of choices including, steaks, chicken, salad (including bleu cheese), shrimp! The manager came out and clarified if we had a gluten intolerance or Celiac. Once he found out we had Celiac, he advised us to stay away from anything fried because they clean the oil the best they can but don't have separate fryers for gluten free stuff. The staff was very knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile for us!!
Had the potato soup and shrimp two ways. Amazing!!!

I have gone several times since I was diagnosed and haven't gotten sick yet. They do offer a gluten free menu, so you don't have to do the guessing game. I am always just scared about cross contamination, thats the only reason I rated it 4 stars.
Omnomnomnom :) really good. They are also careful. If you get to go order just check your food before you leave.
Ok, you can eat here BUT don't expect much. I only do as I have a family member who loves it. I bring all my own butter & steak seasoning & literally order a steak dry & plain & a baked potato dry & plain. This is the only way I have eaten here without being sick.
