Love this place! Lettuce wrapped burger. Safe FRIES! And all delicious. Update: they now have gf buns and they are the best burger buns I have ever tasted! I have had celiac for over 10 years so that is saying something!

We are so lucky that the G.O.A.T. of Chicago burgers just happens to be a place that is so great with gluten free food and allergens. I’ve ordered delivery many times, but I had the chance to visit in person and it truly is a no-fuss, no gimmicks, great meal. The staff were extremely friendly, patient and informed (even though they were quite literally slammed with orders). The person I ordered from at the counter was great and answered any questions I had, specifying that the fryer is dedicated for fries only and explaining that other than the buns pretty much everything is gluten free. The best part is that the gluten free bun does not fall apart (some sort of witch craft). They label the burgers with a big red “ALLERGENS” sticker and mark any / all that apply (for me just gluten but they had more options so it looks like they can accommodate many different allergies). The patio area is great, perfect for great weather and the heaters were on to take the chill out of the air. 100/10 must try if you want a burger in Chicago!

They have GF buns and the fries are GF and it’s so delicious I could cry!! They ask if it’s an allergy and will wipe everything down. If you order delivery they have a special GF sticker and ask if it’s an allergy online. I feel SO safe and so cared for and not like a burden at all for needing precautions taken. I love them.

Hands down the best burger and gluten free burger I’ve ever had in my life! Dedicated fryer so all their fries are gluten free. They offer burgers on lettuce wraps or a gluten free bun, and I actually prefer the lettuce wrap! The buns do crumble a bit. Great take out spot if you’re craving a burger. The restaurant is pretty small but they do have a a nice outdoor space.

I have celiac (though have gotten slightly less symptomatic over the years). Gluten free buns and fries with separate fryer. Staff seemed knowledgeable and I felt comfortable, everything tasted good. Food took absolutely forever to come (40+ minutes) but that complaint doesn’t have to do with the positive gf aspect of this place.

Had a good experience here! Staff seemed knowledgeable about celiac and made a clear note of GF on the slip sent to the kitchen. Small menu which makes cross contact slightly less likely. That being said… the gf bun was truly atrocious and kind of ruined the whole experience. Definitely trying the lettuce wrap next time!

Best lettuce-wrap burger anywhere, hands down. Legit the lettuce wraps allllll the way around the meat. Perfection. Fries in a dedicated fryer. Delicious chocolate shakes. Go-to place when we want burgers now. Pricey? Yes. But you’re getting the Au Cheval burger, for God’s sake.

As someone who is very sensitive to even the smallest amount of gluten I was very nervous to give this a try, but I’m so happy I did! The lettuce “bun” was delicious, the fries were great (dedicated fryer!!) and best of all, I didn’t get sick!

The fries were nice and crunchy. The hamburgers/cheeseburgers were honesty nothing to write home about. They were all right. Too many onions for my taste. Canned soda. Lots of liquor and beer. That's all I can really say. Friendly staff.

This place has excellent burgers and fries. I haven’t gotten sick. Normally I don’t get burgers if a gluten free bun isn’t offered, but I make an exception for this place. I would bump it up to 5 stars if they started offering a GF bun! Try the fries with the garlic aioli, so good.

I love Small Cheval. But I especially love how great they are with gluten free! No, there’s no gluten free buns. But standing waiting for my order, I heard them shout out — twice — a reminder that my burger was a gluten allergy. Then, they even went as far as to put my burger in an entirely separate bag from the rest of the order.

Above. And. Beyond. I’ve eaten here many many times and never gotten sick. But it wasn’t until today when I realized why. It’s just burgers, fries, and milkshakes but they take extra care here for those of us with celiac.

Love Au Cheval so was excited to try Small Cheval. Burgers are served between two lettuce leafs, although wish they offered a bun since they don’t serve the burger on a hash brown patty “bun” like at Au Cheval. Fries are made in a dedicated fryer, enjoyed with aioli sauce. Staff who take your order ask if you have an allergy or if it’s a preference so they can prepare your burger away from where they grill the buns. An enjoyable meal overall.

Delicious burgers. No gluten free buns but the lettuce wrap is good. They note whether it is an allergy on your order. The staff knows the ingredients in the food. The only thing they cook in the fryer is potatoes. 24 hours later I feel fine and so does my celiac boyfriend.

The best burger! Wrapped in lettuce to make it gluten free. And they make an effort to note the allergy and keep mine away from the other bread. Fries are safe to eat too and delicious with the garlic aioli.
