Somos Handcrafted Arepas

We enjoy making Arepas at home so when we found Somos on this app, we wanted to stop in! We didn’t ask about kitchen protocol but they let us know everything but the cheese stuffed breads were gf and those are kept separately in a case (along side the empanadas). For a GF option you can make an arepa, cachapa or a bowl. Pick your base, add your protein, toppings and sauce. It was all delicious.

I was scrolling on the app before I realized I haven’t left a review for Somos yet! I live in New Haven and I order Somos pretty much once a week without fail. Everything in here is gluten free except the fried items, but there’s no cross contamination risk there so you get to take your pick of anything else on the menu without worry. It’s SO good. I feel like I need to plug the cachapa. It’s an underrated menu item and I actually like the sweet yellow corn shell better than the standard arepa one. Anyway, I can’t recommend this place enough.

I ate lunch here with some coworkers. Everything but the taquenos (stored with the empanadas in a separate warmer) is gluten free. I had the pabellon arepa with pork. It was fine, but lacking something creamy to help offset the heavy meat. Not the best arepa I’ve ever had, but it was nice to have a mostly safe option.

Delicious food. Everything except the Tequenos are gluten free. They understand celiac.

We had empanadas, which were light crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, and Arepas, yumm.

I would say one Arepas or 3 empanadas is enough for one person. You can’t go wrong picking something.

These arepas were flatter and harder than other arepas we’ve had before. But it was a safe meal on our drive through Connecticut (we get tired of Chipotle!) We’re vegetarian and they had options for that, too. Maybe the meat options add moisture. The staff were friendly.

I had a delicious arepa and empanadas here last week! Ingredients were fresh and flavorful and I felt very safe. I especially enjoyed the fact that you can create your own arepa & pick your toppings instead of only having preset choices. I would definitely return!

June 19, 2023- I ate a very celiac safe lunch. Just about everything is GF except for the tequenos. I'd suggest the beef cachapa with queso de mano, all the toppings, and spicy verde sauce. I was so expressed that I took the Reina Pepiada (with chicken and avocado) area back to my hotel for a snack. Definitely recommend!

This food is awesome. My son who is Celiac and very sensitive searched out this place when we visited New Haven. It was so good we came back for lunch the day after dinner. Staff was knowledgeable and he had no issues.

We popped into Somos right before closing time. The employees were very friendly and answered all questions. We had the arepas and cachapa. Both were delicious but we all liked the cachapa the best. Highly recommend this restaurant. Felt safe eating here.

This place is great! Everything but the tequenos is gf. The guy who assisted us was very knowledgeable. The arepa was so stuffed! So much food for a low price. My fiancé and I tried a chicken arepa, beef empanada, and cheese empanada. I preferred the beef, he preferredthe chicken, and we both loved the cheese empanada best of all. But all of it was great. Definitely a fan of the chipotle mayo too. No negative reactions. I wish we lived closer!

Delicious South American food,. You order at the counter, lots of options for fillings. Everything in the restaurant is gluten free except for one item (tequeños). A big hit with the kids too.

I love this place! My favorite arepas I’ve tried! Arepas are naturally gf which is awesome! Only not gf things on the menu are the fried things and chalupa but I could eat an arepa from here everyday!

Amazing!! We took our kids and everyone loved the food. No one got sick from being glutened. They seemed very knowledgeable about Celiac disease. We can't wait to come back when we are visiting the area again. Highly recommend this restaurant.
