I had to add Sukeban to clue in the NOLA celiac community. Loving sushi is such a PIA when you’re celiac, you think it’s fine and then you get poisoned and find out pretty quickly (hopefully?) that both soy sauce and imitation crabmeat have gluten in it. I went YEARS not knowing what was going on. I’ve been dragging along my bottle of tamari when I think about it and avoiding most specialty rolls for YEARS. When we were able to snag a spot at Sukeban on a Saturday, and I told them I was celiac, they promptly swapped out the little spray bottle of soy sauce for tamari, and told me I could order anything I pleased off of the dinner menu. I could have cried from happiness. I had a roll with REAL CRAB in it. That might sound silly to some; for me, it was transcendent. The dishes are inventive, fresh, authentic, and thoughtful. I wanted for absolutely nothing. If you love sushi and omekase but cannot eat gluten, I am telling you, go to Sukeban. There’s a good chance you’ll see me at the bar because I am in love.
