After our delightful experience at La Food Marketa, we went to Sunday Brunch on March 25 at their sister restaurant in Hampden, The Food Market. It was packed! The only seating for two was at a community table. When I expressed concern about possible cross-contamination from crumbs my nearest fellow diners might scatter tearing their breads apart (happened to me once at a women’s health conference!) the woman seating us reassured me that their breadstuffs were not likely to be torn or to create crumbs if they were. So we chanced it and had no problem. I ordered shrimp & grits which their menu indicated could be made gf by showing 3 dots: ... after the menu entry, just as La Food Marketa does. I commented to our server that the item sounded gf anyway, and he said Yes, it was, but he needed to let the kitchen know they needed to be careful to avoid cross-contamination. Both our meals were delicious! The menu has many gf options, as has its sister in Quarry Lake, more than the average place, and the regular menu has the notation ... on it so you don’t need to request a special gf menu. The service was attentive and thoughtful, despite the crowd. We talked to the owner(?) and he said the menus were different at the two places; but we saw that they aim at the same level of excellence. The Hampden place seems more inspired by the N. American South and soul food, while the one in Quarry Lake leans to Latino. Neither one is cheap, but well worth the treat!
