Village inn review for FMGF app
I’ve been a Celiac for over 20 yrs and have ate many times in St. Ignace though it’s been a few years. I was in the area the first part of Nov 2023 and our group chose to eat dinner at the Village Inn. After reading the more recent reviews (many negative) on the FMGF app for the area, I took some food just in case I was unable to get a meal.
Well, meet Server Andi. She is Awesome. After talking with her, explaining the reviews, and my concerns, I felt very comfortable ordering the Maple Chicken, sautéed vegetables, and roasted sweet potatoes. Check it out and ask for Andi. She’ll help you find a meal. (You can still consider taking your own food in just in case.)
Agreed with the most recent poster- they do not cater to gluten-free diets any longer. I went here today and discussed the menu with the waitress, who informed me the, "only gluten free item is the gf bun". When I pressed her and asked more questions, for example is the beef patty gluten free, are the mushrooms and onions on the mushrooms swiss burger prepared gluten free, etc., she told me that nope, they only have gluten free buns. She went to talk with the chef and Saud he agreed with her, which is concerning. The lack of knowledge made me leave and find somewhere else to eat.

Always excellent service and good options. They have gluten free bun and most burgers and sandwiches can be made gluten free. I love the salads. Great drink options too.

I highly recommend Village Inn. The food is terrific and Chelsea, the waitress, was a delight. She was VERY familiar with what was GF on the menu. I had cheese tortellini with GF garlic bread. It was excellent!! The other family members ordered the planked whitefish that was delicious! Best food we’ve had all week! I have celiac and did not have any reactions. We will be back!!

While no GF menu, server was aware of allergy eating challenges. They did not know ingredients of GF buns (my wife is also corn allergic), so she just got a sandwich with no bun.

Awesome server. She was suggesting GF options. I choose pasta with chicken and Alfredo sauce homemade and delish. Even had a beer

The staff was very very familiar with cross contamination and asked lots of questions with what I’m comfortable with. I ordered a burger with a gf bun, but he said it was cooked on the same grilled as everything else. He came back with lots of suggestions of things that can be made safely for me. I had gf tortellini and cider! It was good, nothing crazy delicious, but I felt very safe eating there.

I wanted the famous planked whitefish, but the menu description didn’t seem to be safe. After consulting with the kitchen, the waitress told me the broiled whitefish would be the safest fish option. It was very good! GF buns available for burgers and sandwiches. GF spirits and seltzer available from the bar.

Had the burger and Michigan Cherry salad. Gluten free bun tasted great!! French fries are in a shared fryer so those aren’t safe. No reaction. The restaurant was cute. They do have gf pasta, but not sure how safe it is.

My sister & I split the whitefish dinner. We ordered it broiled, it came with roasted vegetables & fire roasted sweet potatoes. We also ordered a side of cole slaw & a butter, toasted gf roll. Every thing was delicious.

Had a hamburger, it was good with a GF bun. I was worried about cross contamination. But I didn’t get sick. They had GF pasta and GF bun.

I had the broiled whitefish with a baked potato and steamed green beans and carrots. It was all very good. My family had non GF food and everyone really enjoyed their food. GF buns and pasta available though I didn't inquire about those.

My wife and I had an Olive hamburger and a Deluxe Cheese burger both on a Gluten-free bun. It was very good! Gluten-free buns are offered on the menu.

Offer Gluten Free buns for sandwiches and burgers. Waitress was very helpful answering questions and checked with chef to confirm. Had the broiled whitefish, baked potato, and green beans. Delicious!
Yes
They have gf buns and was told the jamaican cooking options are gf. They also said they can make anything for us gf but they do not have gf noodles. Salmon was delish
Lots of gluten-free options, especially when I mentioned I have celiac, i.e using flash fried potatoes vs fried for tot-chos, gluten-free bun, and celiac friendly alternatives for fries.
Yes
Gf pasta option. Chef was very accommodating for my celiac daughter. Made sure water hadn't been used for pasta and put on clean gloves to avoid cross contamination.
We just stopped for lunch here based on the reviews and variety on the menu. One review said the nachos were gluten free, but when I asked the waitress she said she didn't know and didn't offer to find out. I ordered the gluten free pizza instead. I ordered the spaghetti with GF pasta for my daughter and I swear the waitress gave a little eye roll. When our food came, my father in law asked to double check they brought us the GF spaghetti and pizza and the waitress replied, "If that's what they ordered." Half of the pizza crust was burnt, but it was otherwise decent. Our waitress must have heard us complaining she was rude because she came back and apologized if her comment came across rude and assured us the food we received was GF. She was pretty nice for the rest of the time. Over all, I would have expected a restaurant with gluten free pizza and buns to have a bit more knowledge about their menu items and more understanding about a person's preference to double check before eating the food.

I had the gf garden pasta and it was tasty. The waiter confirmed with the kitchen that the posts is boiled in fresh water. My kids had a gf pepperoni pizza and I didn’t hear any complaints.

Menu wasn't easy to navigate but our server, Angie, was somewhat knowledgeable & willing to check with the kitchen. Carol was also very sweet & helpful. The whitefish was prepared in its own pan & extremely good. I was told I could have the fries but there's no dedicated fryer so no french fries if you have Celiac. This is a very busy kitchen & there was no sense that they had a dedicated area so I was apprehensive but everything worked out & I didn't get sick.

Knowledgeable staff. gluten free buns, fryer and pizza as well as full meals. Good food with no issues after for us.
knowledgeable waitress and excellent food!!
Waitress was fabulous, and so was the food! I got the turkey sandwich with avocado. I'm not sure what sort of crack they put in that thing, but it was delightful, as was the Citrus Kale coleslaw!
Came here a year ago and service and food was great, for cali club. Today Was awful service! I asked about how their food is prepared if I order gluten free - always like to check if it isn't one of my regular places. The waitress was not helpful. I understand it's not a advertised gluten free place but hoped that since some staff is knowledgeable the rest would be. Sadly I received attitude when I decided not to order. To me, it's not worth the risk. My husband still orders his meal as he's not gluten free. Sadly, I won't be back...
Yummy zucchini noodles with chicken, knowledgable and friendly waitress!

Had the Planked Whitefish, which was excellent. Our waitress recommended the GF pizza, so we also tried that. it was just Ok. Overall, I'd highly recommend this restaurant.
Very good restaurant. Service & food was great. My wife had the prime rib and no issues with gluten. Nachos were also fantastic and GF.

Ate there 3 years ago because it touted gluten-free options. Horrible experience. The waitress was flippant and could care less about my concerns. She never offered to check with the chef/kitchen when I asked questions and just looked at me with a blank stare when I asked. She knew nothing about gluten intolerance and made it clear she didn't want to. It was a very slow night so there was no excuse.
Their GF sandwich bread is delicious!! Very soft & tasty! I ordered their "Cali Club"... Yum!! We'll definitely have to add this to our list of places to come back to!
So delicious! Had the Cali club on a gluten free bun. They had options for sandwiches, burgers and pizza. Normal side options aren't gluten free including the fries because they have batter on them but they offered me grilled veggies for complimentary. Otherwise I could get a side salad for less than a dollar.
The menu choices were awesome !! I tried the "Hey Arnold" on a gf bun and it was delicious! Gail our server was very kind and knowledgeable about being a celiac. thank you Gail, we'll be back😊
As a GF vegetarian, my options are usually limited to pizza or salads when eating out, but I just had a caprice sandwich on a gf bun that was delicious. They also had sautéed vegetables offered as a side and the server was knowledgeable about gf options.
They had the best gluten free pizza I've ever had! It was the kind of pizza I've been missing.
Gf pizza was very good. Waitstaff knew about gluten. Said they had gf buns for sandwiches and burgers. I was worried about getting sick but I did not.
Yes
VERY disappointed! The waitress did not know if fries were gluten free. She checked, they weren't, so she offered pasta salad or soup with pasta as a replacement. When I pointed out that wouldn't work, she offered a salad, but would up charge me. Then she did not know which salad dressings were gluten free, and would not go check. I ended up walking out.

Great pizza! Didn't get sick at all.

According to my girls 'best gluten free pizza ever!'
We stopped in after finding a long wait at another restaurant near our ferry dock. So glad we ventured out and gave Village Inn a try! Fine kids menu, great gf plank whitefish, terrific gf chicken dish and really nice small gluten free pizza for our daughter. Honestly, way better than our expectations, especially having eaten at the Village Inn on the island over the years. Gail, our server, was super friendly and you could tell the chef has her heart in it. Thanks for saving a hungry family on a busy Saturday night - we'll be back!
