Of Course, I still have to do the research, but they have so much available for special diets. Over the years they have expanded their gluten free selection. I have been very impressed with their set up.
Not concerned with cross contamination (for the prices they should already be set up), and not many GF options that you couldn't find at your local grocer for half the price, however they have some safe packaged items.
This review is for the deli not the grocery store itself. Let start by saying you would think they know.. They don't! Ordered a burger with gluten free bun. Per the girl behind the counter their fries are gluten free (not gf). I asked the girl if it was a shared or dedicated French fryer. The girl behind the counter told me it didn't matter as I can't get sick from a shared fryer. I who has cd didn't know this and it's her job to tell me I won't get sick. I should of ran and never looked back!!!! The guy next to her informed me they were out gluten free buns so I asked to do a lettuce wrap (I'm use to eating a burger without a bun so I'm perfectly happy with a lettuce wrap). When I picked up my burger the girl gave me wonderful news they had found a gluten free bun. After paying for my meal I sat at the tables near the door. I took one bite.. Best burger ever.... Amazing bun.. Within minutes I start to feel the pain... I ask my husband to take a bite... He gives me the bad news. The bun looks and tastes just like his gluten bun. I'm only 2 or 3 bites in... OMG.. I'm having a bad reaction. I'm in so much pain and now I need to get to the bathroom. The worst part is I'm having such a bad reaction that I can't complain or even ask for a refund for my burger. I have to time it so I can make it home. Words can't describe the pain and agony I felt because some girl decided it's ok to switch a gluten free bun with a gluten bun. I paid over $10 for a burger my body has yet to forget. I learned a valuable lesson 1) never buy prepared food at whole foods deli 2) take 1 bite of any prepared food (I didn't make) then wait 5 min to see if I react (no matter how hungry you are)
Whole Foods is ok if you cannot get to Mana Foods in Paia.
Pricey!! Have really extended their gluten free bakery options including Coquette's and outside the Bread box. Wish there were more ready to eat GF Options.
Great place to go for lunch at the hot bar or salad bar. Ingredients are clearly marked on labels above the foods. 90% are gf. They are gf knowledgeable and say they won't label anything gf because they don't have a dedicated prep facility. They also have gf bread for sandwiches. Large selection of gf foods in the grocery too.
go to the deli for a yummy sandwich on gluten free bread. sometimes i have to ask them to change their gloves and use a clean surface for the bread but they are usually friendly about it.
I am reviewing the food court. It's not celiac friendly. If you can tolerate cross contamination, it's ok. They do have everything labelled. However, I didn't trust the labels after I saw poached eggs on English muffins and yet wheat was not listed as an allergen. The staff makes it clear that if you are celiac they do not recommend you eat there. They were not at all accommodating.
I like having this close to work since my grocery options in the downtown area are so limited. They have a great selection of gluten free grocery items which generally cost a bit more than some of our other local stores but they also have a lot of sales and coupons so if you watch for those you can get some good deals. They also carry locally made GF products like New Cascadia bread which is some of the best bread I've had. They have GF sandwiches in their deli (I think they use their own bread, it's really good bread) but beware if you are celiac or very sensitive they often use the same utensils and if you get a grilled Panini they use the same Panini press. The hot GF pizza slices are very tasty but they heat it up using the same paddle and brick oven they use to cook the regular pizza.
I love this whole foods. They have an outstanding hot bar, and all their choices have ingredient lists and list allergens. I can't speak to cross contamination as I don't know how the food is prepared, but I've never gotten sick from the food here. Lots of grocery options too, obviously.
I live in the area and this is a must for GF. They are not perfect but a great place for a comprehensive selection of GF options. I'm also dairy free and they provide a nice selection of DF milk options as well. Nice prepared hot/cold food and salad area. Can buy and then eat prepared food in attached cafe. It would be helpful if prepared food would have GF indicators so you wouldn't have to read every ingredient for each item. Love the juice bar as well.
many options here for carry out food as all ingredients are listed at their buffet. I shop at this chain in Annapolis. The buffet line there has dedicated scales for weighing food which they did not have here. That was surprising considering the larger clientel. Found a bread here from a local bakery - very good Anna B's Gluten Free. It is NOT frozen and on bread shelf.
I love their gluten free pizzas but after calling them on the phone and verifying that the pizza could be cooked for me at the pizza counter the cook said it could not be done. I was out of town and no where near an oven I could use and starving. my whole family was very upset. no pizza tonight! we settled on chipotle 1.1 miles away.
I agree with the previous rating. It's whole foods so they have a lot on gf items on the shelf, but the staff in the salad area/bakery did not know what gf free was. Also, what was really bothersome was that they seemed annoyed that I asked. One girl (who was helpful) just kept saying it was "healthy and organic". When I explained how important this was and that I could end up in the hospital if I get gluten she didn't seem to think that was significant. ( I say that bc she just stared at me and didn't go ask for help). I ended up getting a basic salad without dressing and left feeling like I wouldn't go back for fresh food. Very unpleasant experience.
