The good and the bad.....just be careful and ask for manager.

My daughter has celiac disease. We went to Winona's based on the many reviews that said it was safe. We went at lunch and ordered a choose your own sandwich with meat and cheese. We were told by a young server that the sandwich would be made in the back away from other stuff....yay! When we asked if mayo and mustard were in squeeze bottles so no cross contamination with spreading on regular bread, we were told no....boo. So we ordered a side of ranch dressing that she could spread on her GF bread with her sandwich. We asked what we could substitute for french fries (common fryer) and were told that the sweet potato fries were cooked separately so we ordered those. When we got her plate, there were a couple regular fries in with the sweet potato fries and my daughter asked about it. Another server (seemed like a manager) overheard and said those are all cooked in the same fryer. The young waitress said "I thought the sweet potato fries were okay" The older server said "No! Only home fries could be cooked in a pan. All french fries are cross contaminated." She then explained things clearly to the young server and the kitchen. She had them re-make it and she comped our meal.....yay. Good way to acknowledge and handle the situation. And I could hear her hammer home to other employees the severity and difference between gluten free and Celiac.

But if my daughter hadn't caught the mishap before eating, we would have been in for a long night of throwing up. So you just need to make sure you are asking for a server or manager who truly knows what they are talking about.
